"Swallow's Nest" is a beautiful castle, which is one of the examples medieval architecture. This outstanding architectural monument was built on a sheer cliff of Aurora about 40 meters high in the village of Gaspra (Southern coast of Crimea).

The buildings are fully consistent with medieval type castles » Eagle Nest”, which were erected on impregnable rocks. In those days it was quite common. One example is a fortified tower − fort torri di belem in Lisbon (Portugal).

Or Miramare castle in Trieste(Italy), which has an important historical meaning, and is also characterized by extreme beauty and grace of lines.

If we compare the architectural features of "Swallow's Nest", we can see similar stylistic features. So, despite its elegance and sophistication of lines, the castle is a fairly fortified structure and a reliable shelter.

"Swallow's Nest" as if hovering over the turquoise sea surface

Such a layout of structures on the ground was fully justified by the owners' safety considerations, because the approach to its gates was only from one side. But grief was for the defenders of the castle, if this only road was blocked by the conquerors - in this case, there were practically no ways to retreat.

Historical and cultural significance The swallow's nest is extremely large, so the building has become the central image on the emblem of the southern coast of Crimea.

Construction history

Initially, a small building was erected on the site of the current castle in the 70s of the XIX century. It was the dacha of one of the retired generals of the Russian army. This area was so beautiful, and the view of the rock sheltered on the very edge was so picturesque that some artists of that time (I.K. Aivazovsky, A.P. Bogolyubov and L.F. Lagorio) captured it on their canvases.

Subsequently, the wooden house passed into the possession of the court physician A.K. Some time after the death of her husband, the widow sold the land with the house to the rich Moscow merchant Rakhmanina.

The old small building was immediately demolished, and an elegant wooden castle was built in its place, which the sentimental merchant's wife called "Swallow's Nest". It was with her light hand that this poetic name was assigned to the new building.

Of course, this building was much more luxurious and solid than the previous building, and given its unique location on the very edge of the Aurora Rock, the impression made by the Swallow's Nest was incredibly strong.

However, modern look The Swallow's Nest received only at the beginning of the 20th century, when the richest Russian oilman P. L. Shteingel acquired the site. He was extremely fond of the Black Sea and the Crimea, and therefore wanted to create his own romantic corner on its sun-warmed land.

Modern look Castle "Swallow's Nest"

construction medieval castle in was produced in 1911 - 1912 according to the project of the engineer and sculptor Leonid Shervud, whose father was the famous Russian architect Vladimir Shervud.

A feature of the Swallow's Nest is the stepped arrangement of its tiers. This was done because the site for building on the edge of the cliff was relatively small. Thus, the foundation of the building has an area of only 200 square meters (width = 10 meters and length = 20 meters). The height of the castle itself reaches 12 meters.

Castle "Swallow's Nest"

In a two-story building rising above a sheer cliff, the rooms are arranged in series, in tiers - this is an entrance hall, a living room, and then steps and bedrooms, whose windows overlook the endless sea.

The relatively small size of the site still did not prevent the garden from being laid out around the castle, as well as neat paths for walking. of the estate was, of course, quite restrained, but at the same time more than paid off by magical beauty surrounding nature- impregnable rocks and boundless sea expanses.

Two years later, the castle of unique beauty was sold to the merchant P. G. Shelaputin, who turned the Swallow's Nest from a cozy romantic nest into a restaurant, the interior of which was decorated in the old Russian style, which did not harmonize with the overall building.

Next were the famous historical events the October Revolution and Civil War, and the Swallow's Nest stood in complete desolation for some time. When on Crimean peninsula Soviet power came, the castle was transferred to the disposal of the Main Directorate of State Farms of Crimea. However, they were in no hurry not only with the restoration of the building, but even with the care of it.

After the famous Crimean earthquake in 1927, a huge crack formed in the rock on which the Swallow's Nest was built. This led to the fact that part of the estate with a garden located on it collapsed into the sea, and the observation platform loomed menacingly over the sea. But the castle itself survived and remained virtually unscathed.

After the earthquake, the Swallow's Nest was located for some time reading room Rest houses, but soon the castle was declared emergency, and it was closed to the public.

Only 30 years later, the restoration of the Swallow's Nest began. The base of the foundation was reinforced with a slab of , and the castle itself was carefully restored. Since then, the Swallow's Nest has been one of the symbols of the Crimea.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the Swallow's Nest was reconstructed, and the castle again housed a restaurant, this time Italian. However, in 2013, new cracks were discovered in the rock, which again made the building dangerous for accidents.

At the moment, the Swallow's Nest is closed to the public and is awaiting reconstruction. However, the castle continues to please the eyes of the guests of the Crimea and local residents with its exquisite beauty and refined grace of lines.

Swallow's nest in the works of artists

Famous marine painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were struck by the refined grace of the Swallow's Nest, and therefore depicted it on their canvases.

The magical beauty of the castle is reflected in the work of many contemporary painters. They portray graceful medieval castle in a different manner, different time days and under illumination of different intensity, but at the same time the beauty of the Swallow's Nest does not fade at all.

Beautiful paintings by modern painters, as well as high-quality reproductions of paintings, can become a real decoration of the interior, not only in, but also in many classical styles.

After joining in 1783 Crimea to Russia, eminent people began to come here. They acquired land on the South Bank, built palaces, planted gardens and parks. They came just to relax.

An unknown general, the first participant in the Russian-Turkish war, became the owner of a wooden dacha, which he decided to build on a rock, calling it the "Castle of Love".

It is no longer known what inspired the general most of all to build a dacha in this place. Perhaps the legend that once on the rock there was a sanctuary of the goddess Virgin, who was worshiped by the inhabitants. There may be mesmerizing sunrises that open from a rock that bears the name of Aurora (goddess of the morning dawn).

After the death of the general, the fact remains that the owners of the dacha changed rapidly, and each contributed to the restructuring of the building. It was then that the name "Swallow's Nest" was assigned to the place.

Major German oilman Baron von Stengel became the owner of the building in 1911. He participated in the development of Baku oil, and then he had an idea - in memory of his beloved Germany, to build a castle in the Crimea, similar to knight's castles middle ages. And already in 1914, a miniature knight's castle, built from the Crimean gray limestone and yellow Yevpatoriya stone, built according to the project of the talented Russian architect A.V. Sherwood. The structure covers an area of 10*20 meters and has a height of 12 meters.

With the outbreak of World War I, Stengel left Russian Empire, and the philanthropist and merchant P. Shelaputin becomes the owner of the building.

Almost every significant corner in the Crimea has its own fairy tale story. So, the legend of the Swallow's Nest castle tells about the failed love of the god of the sea, Poseidon, and the goddess of the morning dawn, Aurora.

In short, Aurora loved to meet the dawn on a rock and one day Poseidon saw her, who really liked her. But the goddess rejected his love. Poseidon went to the trick, decided to enchant Aurora with a magical diadem, asked the lord of the winds Eol to hide the sun with clouds. While waiting for the sun, Aurora dozed off. Poseidon crept up and almost bewitched the goddess, but she woke up and escaped. The diadem fell and hit the rock, part of the diamond from the crown fell into the crevice. When the clouds dissipated, a ray of sun hit the shard, which turned into a castle.

The history of the attraction

The Swallow's Nest Castle in Crimea appeared at its current location in the second half of the 19th century, immediately after the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. But then it was only a wooden one-story cottage, built by a certain retired general, whose name history, unfortunately, did not preserve.

After some time, the building passed to A.K. Tobin, court physician of Alexander III, who served in. But he did not last long, as he died. In 1903, Tobin's widow sold the piece of land she inherited, where the house was located, to the famous Moscow merchant Rakhmanina.

Birth of the Swallow's Nest Castle

The merchant's wife immediately demolished the squat, dilapidated dacha, and in its place erected a wooden castle, which she called the Swallow's Nest. Judging by the painting by Aivazovsky, outwardly it was very similar to the final building, which arose somewhat later through the efforts of Baron Stengel.

The next owner, the German magnate and oilman Rudolf von Stengel, who loved to relax in the Crimea, decided to build a real one in this place - in the medieval Gothic style.

To implement his ideas, he invited the famous engineer and sculptor Leonid Sherwood, who enthusiastically set to work. Already in 1912, on the site of the wooden brainchild of Rakhmanina, from which only the name remained, a beautiful miniature castle grew up - in the form in which it remains today.

Castle from World War I to today

In 1914, Stengel sold the Swallow's Nest to the merchant Pavel Shelaputin, and he left for Germany. The manager of Shelaputin turned the building into a restaurant, which turned out to be unprofitable and soon closed. After the death of the merchant, which followed this, the castle changed owners several times until it was abandoned.

By the time Soviet power was established on the peninsula in 1920, it was in complete disrepair. After nationalization, it was transformed into a party canteen, but after the building, which was in disrepair, was closed. The building was a depressing sight until 1967, when the architect Tatiev and a team of specialists completely restored it, strengthening the facade and foundation.

In 2002, the final reconstruction was carried out, and since 2011 the Swallow's Nest castle in the Crimea has been an architectural and historical monument. Since that time, excursions have been constantly held here, attracting numerous tourists both from Russia and from near and far abroad.

Symbolic castle in legends

Local legends attribute the appearance of the Swallow's Nest to those distant times, when everything earthly was still not alien to the gods, and they visited the limits of human habitation. So, on the cramped site of the Monastery-Burun, the goddess of the morning dawn, Aurora, liked to meet the dawn, ascending the mountain every morning. With her appearance suddenly
the whole neighborhood woke up, the birds began to sing, and everyone rejoiced at the appearance of a beautiful person.

Once Poseidon himself saw her, sitting on a rock, in all her splendor and bewitching beauty. And at the same moment, Cupid struck the heart of the stern sea god, who was inflamed with unbridled passion for the young maiden. Then he opened up to her in his feelings, but Aurora rejected his love and fled from him without looking back. Desperate Poseidon decided on an insidious act - he persuaded Eol, who commanded the winds, to overtake heavy clouds in the morning sky so that they would not let the sun's rays touch the earth.

At the appointed hour, Aurora, as before, waited for dawn, but the sun still did not come out. Tired of waiting, she involuntarily fell asleep. At the same moment, Poseidon, having crept up, grabbed her, but Aurora immediately woke up and slipped out of his arms, and his diadem flew off the head of the insidious god and fell to the ground. From the blow, one of the gems fell out of it and rolled into a dark crevice, and when the sun came out and penetrated into it with its rays, everything around shone, and a beautiful castle grew in this place.
