In the Amazon jungle. A very beautiful journey through the Amazon jungle

Arriving by train from Aqua Calientes to Cusco, in the morning we fly to the Amazon jungle.

Just half an hour flight. Behind us, the snow caps of the mountains are still visible, and below us is the endless green ocean - the jungle of the Amazon. They include hundreds of large and small rivers that feed the main artery of the South American continent - the Amazon. This jungle stretches to the Atlantic for more than three thousand kilometers, which is comparable to the distance from Moscow to Krasnoyarsk. A total area this largest green plain in the world is more than 5 million square meters. km - almost a third of Russia ...

Oddly enough, but most of The territories of Peru are not mountains, but jungles. And shortly after taking off from Cusco, only two colors became visible under the wing of the plane - green and yellow. Green jungles and yellow ribbons of rivers…

8

We arrive at Padre Aldamis Airport in Puerto Maldonado, a city in the southeast of Peru. One hundred years ago this place was the capital of rubber mining. From here it is not far to the borders of Bolivia with Brazil.

Puerto Maldonado is located at the confluence of two rivers - Tambopata and Madre de Dios (Mother of the Gods). The latter is a tributary of the Amazon. From these places, along Madre de Dios, shipping is already beginning. And all the way to the Atlantic.

35 degrees heat. Strong humidity. The height of these places above sea level: 266 m.

We flew to these places for a couple of days to get acquainted with the life of the jungle and its inhabitants. We think that this time is quite enough to get acquainted with both the flora and fauna of these places. After receiving the luggage, we made a transfer to river pier where the boat was already waiting for us.

An hour and a half down the muddy yellow river (approx. 30 km) and we dock at the Eco Amazonia lodge, which is located on the left bank of the river in the ecological zone Concesion de Ecoturismo EcoAmazonia. We are greeted with cold juices by the lodge team and settled in the houses.

The lodge consists of a couple dozen cozy bungalows with thatched roofs and mosquito nets instead of windows. In the middle of the complex is a large indoor swimming pool with cool water. In general, Europe.

And only huge parrots sitting on the branches near the bungalow, lizards and geckos crawling along the walls and a couple of tame tapirs wandering around the territory said that we were already in the country of the jungle and exotic. At the back of the lodge was big garden With tropical fruits and our guide Victor, a biologist by education, skillfully told about each tree and even gave some of the already ripened fruits to try.

The toucan is a rather noisy bird and the Indians love to hunt them.

1

Having crossed to the other side of the river, squelching with boots along the wet paths, we follow our guide Victor in a chain. Seeing our common excitement unusual environment and hearing the noise from our chatter, he expressed the main thesis of behavior in the jungle: "The more you are silent, the more you see!"

1

On either side of the path were impenetrable green walls that closed high above. And it got even darker. Around dozens of hitherto unseen exotic plants. Very hot and humid. Everyone's face is wet and shiny with sweat.

Our guide Victor spoke briefly in mixed Spanish-English about all the plants and trees that we met on our way. And when he saw that my wife was leaning against one of the trees, he quickly grabbed her by the hand and took her away from him!

What's happened? It turns out that under the bark of these trees there is one of the most aggressive and dangerous species of ants in the world - Paraponera clavata, or as they are also called, due to the similarity of pain from their bites with gunshot wounds, bullet ants ...

1

The local Indians have several options for using these ants in their everyday life: the first - a person sentenced to death for crimes is tied to a tree for the night and the second - every boy who is preparing to become a man must put his hands into the ritual "mittens" in which these ants crawl for a few minutes ...

To illustrate the effect of the bite of such an ant, I give a link to a short clip about how a white tourist tried on such a mitten on his hand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TaSCYw1M8I

Having walked half a kilometer, Victor stopped our group in a small clearing, on which stood a table knocked together from logs. This place turned out to be baited for a flock of monkeys, who, as soon as they saw us, quickly descended from the trees and brazenly surrounded our group. They already knew we brought bananas!

And they were not afraid of us at all and even climbed on the back of some of us.

2

And one, completely impudent, snatched a bottle of water from the outer pocket of her backpack and, headlong climbing a tree, sat down on a branch and let's try to open it. But she didn’t have enough mind to unscrew the cork, and she let’s crack it along the thick branch on which she sat. The bottle cracked and all the water spilled over our heads. Out of anger that she didn’t get anything, she, as it seemed to us, launched it at us ...

After waiting until we played enough with the kids, Victor led us further deep into the jungle and, stopping near some mink under a tree, began to carefully stir up a branch near its entrance. Soon long legs of some insect appeared from it. And, finally, he himself appeared - a gray and seemingly inconspicuous spider.

But this, as the guide explained, was a very poisonous tarantula. Such spiders usually spend the day in their mink, and go hunting at night. The result of his tactile encounter with a person is very dangerous.

It’s better not to appear in the jungle at night - in addition to various kinds of spiders, all other dangers invisible during the day come to life - snakes, wild cats and even poisonous frogs. These frogs sometimes look very beautiful and you just want to pick them up ...

Blue dart frog (Dendrobates azureus). The poison of her skin secretions is also used by local peoples for hunting animals, lubricating the tips of arrows with it, and as an analgesic. From the Internet

met in in large numbers etc. "walking" trees from the Socratea family, similar to tripods. But, in fact, a tree has up to several dozen such legs. These trees do not stand in one place all their lives, but move due to the growth of new stilted roots, which seek out a new wet place for themselves ...

This is hard to imagine, but they are able to slowly walk along the ground, covering distances of up to 20 meters per year!

Having returned from this excursion for an overnight stay at our lodge and after swimming enough in the pool, we once again appreciated its comfort. Seeing the tail of an anaconda in the coastal waters during the day, they did not even think about swimming in the river. No one discounted the caimans with piranhas, which were also found in these waters. Yes, and Victor told us a lot of all sorts different stories about these small but ferocious fish...

The teeth of piranhas seem small, but the result of meeting with them is always deplorable. From the Internet.

The first day in the Amazon jungle is over. And even such a short three-hour walk through the jungle showed all the difficulties of life and development of these places. We have already a month of wanderings in five countries behind us South America Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru.

There was something to remember and something to talk about while sitting on the banks of the wide Madre de Dios, the Peruvian tributary of the Amazon.

Victor, sitting on the stern, deftly controlled it and did not stop showing us the different plants and bird life that came across on our way.

The Amazonian lowland is a real wonder of the world that boggles the imagination; an ecosystem unmatched in size and biodiversity; a place whose impact on travelers is akin to mystical. In the Amazon more water than in seven major rivers the world following her. Two Indias fit in the river basin, and the Amazon flows through the territory of eight countries. It is one of the most important sources of life on the planet, affecting the air, water and climate on which we are so dependent. If you think that behind every tree a jaguar or a half-naked Indian woman is waiting for you, you are in for a little disappointment. Count on armies of howler monkeys, an astounding variety of plant life, the hospitality of Amazonian villagers and towns, and the calm yet awe-inspiring strength of the great river.

When to go

Most right time for a trip to the Amazon - from May to June, after the rainiest months (February to April) and just before the heat and stuffiness (September to November). During the same period, the highest water level in the Amazon is observed. The river overflows in places and floods the surrounding woodlands. The water level rises and falls by as much as 12-15 meters throughout the year, and during the rise you can make an incredible unique canoe trip along the river and the flooded jungle. But the dry season is also attractive in its own way: clear weather and the ability to make long walks through the forests.

Holidays on the Amazon

Acquaintance with the Amazon for the bulk of tourists begins with accommodation in a "forest hotel". Most lodges provide privacy, home cooked food and daily tours. En-suite bathrooms and 24-hour power supply are not found in every hotel. Many lodges provide the opportunity to spend the night in the forest in a specially equipped camp during two- or three-day hikes through the Amazon forests (the so-called "survival tours"). Accommodation with comfort in decent lodges located near Manaus is offered travel agencies Amazon Gero Tours (addr: www.amazongerotours.com) and Amazon Antonio Jungle Tours. A higher level of service can be found at Anavilhanas Lodge and Juma Lodge located in the same area. And one of the best hotels in the entire state of Amazonas is the Uakari Lodge (addr.: www.uakarilodge.com.br) in the Mamiraua Reserve.

River rafting is another way to get to know the Amazon. During river tours, vacationers sleep on board, go on an excursion during stops on the river bank. River tourist boats differ significantly in the level of comfort and service. As a place to sleep, you can be offered both a simple hammock and a luxurious bed. Typical duration of a river tour: 5-10 days. Operators with good reviews and decent service: Lo Peix (addr: www.lopeix.com), Eco Adventures (addr: www.amazonecoadventures.com) and Swallows & Amazons (addr: www.swallowsandamazonstours.com).

Tree climbing and sport fishing are also popular among tourists. These activities may also be part of multi-day tours with accommodation in an eco-lodge or rafting on the Amazon. Tropical tree climbers may be interested in Amazon Tree Climblng (addr: www.amazontreeclimbing.com) or Tropical Tree Climbing (addr: www.tropicaltreeclimbing.com); sport fishing - Maia Expeditions (addr.: www.maiaexpeditions.com). All are in Manaus.

Almost every tourist who comes to the Amazon necessarily takes part in long-term hiking and / or canoeing on the river, while getting to know the Amazonian forests and representatives local fauna. You can also visit the locals, spend the night in the jungle, try to catch piranhas or watch caimans.

How long to go

For most vacationers, in order to have a great time and enjoy the Amazonian nature, a ten-day tour is enough. If you take a couple of days for flights / transfers / road, 5-6 days remain for excursions and all kinds of entertainment. If you plan to spend in the Amazonian forests more than a week, try to break the trip into several parts and spend them in different areas Amazon.

Where to go

Manaus is the largest city in the region and the quickest and easiest way to get into the jungle. In the state capital of Amazonas, you will find many serious tour operators offering various tours, from budget options to the most exclusive and expensive ones. The only negative is that the groups are usually numerous, and the nature along the routes is not so virgin.

Prefer to walk? There are many options. One of the best is a visit to the Mamiraua Reserve, located 675 kilometers upriver from Manaus, at small town Tefe. There is only one eco-lodge where you can stay - Uakari Lodge (url .: www.uakarilodge.com.br). Accommodation is not from the budget, but it's worth it: the rooms are comfortable, the level of service is high, as is the professionalism of the guides, and the richness of the reserved nature is beyond praise. There is hardly a better option.

About six hundred kilometers from Manaus is the tiny town of Alter do Chao (Alter do Chao) - the starting point for boat trips on the Rio Tapajos (Rio Tapajos) - one of the most important tributaries of the Amazon. The program of boat tours includes stops at local settlements with excursions to rubber plantations. The town of Alter do Chao itself is different great beach with white sand and clean air. The most attractive tours are offered by Areia Branca Ecotour (url.: www.areiabrancaecotour.com.br) and Mae Natureza.

How to get there

Manaus is connected by direct flights to almost all major cities Brazil and even Miami (USA). You can get here and water transport from any city on the Amazon, including Belem and Porto Velho. In this case, get ready for long road(from two to five days).

Air or river transport can be reached from Alter to Chao or Tefe. Most of the air and river routes leading to Tefe passes through Manaus. You can’t get to Alter do Chao directly from Manaus. You will have to get by plane or boat to Belem or Santarem, and from there by bus or taxi to Alter to Chao (about 35 kilometers). Speed boats run between Manaus and Tefe. They go much faster than ordinary boats and, of course, cost less than air travel.

By plane, which is also natural, you can get there even faster than by speedboat, and air tickets are sometimes not much more expensive. On the other hand, traveling through the Amazon on river transport by itself interesting adventure: you can sleep in a hammock, chat with other passengers. True, if the route passes along the main fairway, you will not observe much nature.

Rates

Most eco-lodge and boat tours are charged per person per day (abbr. pp/dd) and include accommodation at the eco-lodge, meals, drinking water, guide services, excursions and transfers. In credible budget lodges, the cost varies between $75 - $125 per person per day, and boat rental + accommodation with the best level of service will cost $150 - $250 and even more.

Everyone has their own concept of rest and travel, so someone chooses a holiday in civilized Europe, someone goes to the Middle Eastern countries with "all inclusive", but someone collects a 100 liter backpack and goes to exotic travel. Peru can be considered an unconditional exotic, with the ability to feel free from the tourist pattern “hotel - bus - museum - beach”.

The western part of Peru is dominated by dense jungles and picturesque banks of the Amazon River. The center of the country offers for fans of mountain trekking, there is a huge mountain range Andes. Traveling west you will come to pacific coast with colorful natural scenery. southern part countries belong sand dunes passing into the Nazca desert. Here the splendor of the ancient colonial cities and the valley of the famous Indian villages of the Incas opens up to the eyes.

Incredible Amazon

The vast territory of Peru is covered by the jungle, with a large number of tributaries of the Amazon River, with incredibly colorful landscapes and mysterious places. The jungle to this day remains (fortunately) unexplored and here you can find wild tribes of aborigines, ancient and mysterious remains of buildings and abandoned Indian cities. As you know, the Spanish conquistadors were the first to experience the charms of these places in their desire to find gold, instead they found diseases and many troubles. Animal and vegetable world The Amazonian jungle is rich and diverse, looking at all this greatness you understand that you have never seen anything in your life. For the jungle, everything is the same, they do not divide people into vip and mere mortals, so you feel like a little snail in this realm of nature.

The journey itself to these places becomes an adventure and along the way you can see all the beauty and variety of landscapes. From Lima it is better to fly by plane to Puerto Maldonado, then by land transport to the boat station, from where motor boat you will be taken to your desired place in the Amazon. Here it is better to stay in organized eco-lodges, these are small villages, mostly simple bungalows, from here you can go on your travels, but of course with a guide. By the way, there are always markets nearby where the natives sell anything, from handicrafts, food, to ancient medicinal potions. There are many healers here who also treat with the help of non-traditional methods using natural remedies, various plants, snake venom, ointments from turtle glands. Many come here to be healed of ailments, because it has long been known that healers have remedies for cancer from copaiba - rare plant from the jungle, there are also medicines for impotence and other diseases.

The bungalows are made of reeds and bamboo, without any signs of civilization or even windows, here you can fully connect with nature, the light from the torches, the bamboo bed is covered with leaves, and the soap you use is made from plants. locals nevertheless, they took care of civilized guests, the house has a shower, the water of which is heated by the sun, and a canopy is located above the bed, it protects better than modern means from all sorts of mosquitoes, so that sleep will be calm.

Jungle walks

Walking idly through the jungle is suicide, you definitely need a company and a guide. On palm trees you can often find nests with huge tarantulas, but you should not run away, if they are not disturbed, then they will not touch anyone. There are many termite mounds along the way, which, by the way, you can eat and recharge with a supply of vitamin C with a caramel flavor. By the way, in some densely overgrown jungle places, even during the day, a flashlight would not hurt to see the world. Here you can find huge trees that even five people can’t grasp, and palm trees grow nearby, their lianas stretch as if alive wherever there is more moisture.

By the way, be sure to take a walk on the tops of the trees, this is a breathtaking walk along an impromptu hanging path. The bridges are stretched between the tops of the trees, in some places such trails reach a length of up to 500 meters. From above, the jungle world is extraordinarily beautiful and you can see animals darting about their business, which you would never have seen from the ground. A huge number of birds sing for interruption, their bright colors are beyond description.

Getting to know the monkeys

In the wide places of the Amazon there are quite a few islands, one of which is called the “Monkey Island”. It is worth saying that the primates here are not at all tame and their curiosity sometimes goes too far. Monkeys are very happy with visitors, because it is always accompanied by treats, but you should know that the behavior of monkeys is not predictable, they can easily bite in the process of delicacy. In a couple of minutes, a couple of primates will sit on your shoulders, funny cooing, tickling their tails, picking their hair and begging for a treat. The main thing here is not to laugh and not show your white teeth, because for them this is a sign of grin and aggression.

You can't visit the Amazon and not see the caimans. Accompanied by guides on boats, you can ride to their places of permanent residence, however, there are plenty of them. You will have to sail through the flooded thickets of the jungle, preferably in the evening, this is the time of their activity. Shining a flashlight, you understand that you are in the crocodile kingdom, eyes are shining everywhere, you can even catch small individuals with your hands.

Be sure to visit Lake Sandoval, firstly, this is a very colorful place, secondly, you will be in the company of real Indians from wild tribes, thirdly, the path to the lake will show you the true jungle and you will remember this trip for a lifetime. First, you need to take a motorboat to extreme point and then go to walking tour through the jungle to the nearest tribe. The Indians on their pirogues will take you to the lake along the channels overgrown with lianas. Here nature will open your eyes amazing landscapes. The palm jungle grows right out of the water, their roots create an amazing interweaving, the world above and the world below live by their own rules.

Life thrives in the crowns of the trees, different types birds sing in their own way, the piercing cries of toucans are heard, but bats sleep peacefully on the branches upside down. They are fraught with more dangers, snakes darting everywhere, most of them are not poisonous, although there are quite large specimens with surprising colors.

After such a walk, the impressions are overwhelming, and the physical forces simply leave the body. Returning to the bungalow, be sure to have dinner and taste the local colorful cuisine, this is a “kui” dish, but simply a fried guinea pig. The Indians cook them in different ways, stew them in spices or roast them whole on a fire, they serve salads from fruits or vegetables growing in the jungle for the roast, the food is very high-calorie and you will quickly restore strength. However, the Indians have another way to get rid of fatigue, these are coca leaves, which relieve fatigue and muscle pain. It grows everywhere, like our clover, the natives chew it all the time, in addition, in Peru, coca leaves are sold even in stores and are not considered something forbidden.

The cost of tours at the hotel is calculated by the number of days. The cost of living is from 220 reais (3500 rubles) per day per person. Renting a boat or boat - 320-540 reais (5000-8000 rubles).
You can choose a cheaper hotel, there are enough different "forest hotels" here, the set of excursions is slightly different from those listed above. It is more convenient for some to order them immediately with a tour, while others like to choose the most interesting ones and take them separately.

If the purpose of the trip is to look at the life of the inhabitants of the Amazonian jungle "from the inside", to feel like a resident for a while rainforest, then you can choose the appropriate place to stay. The most repeating all the conditions of life, customs and traditions local population. Rafting on the river is very popular among tourists as a way to get acquainted with the Amazon. During such rafting, travelers live on the ship, and go out to explore the territory at every stop. Before planning such trips, it is better to make sure that the state of health allows you to survive many hours of transitions, all-day excursions and overnight stays in a hammock. However, there are operators that offer a normal bed for the night. A 3-day cruise on the river will cost 750 reais (12,000 rubles, on a boat with an overnight stay in a hammock). About 2,000 reais (32,000 rubles) - for cruise ship, in a separate room with shower. There is a private cruise service, which costs much more. For example, prices for a trip on a yacht for 12 people start at 10,000 reais (160,000 rubles).

For the most persistent, there is a “survival program” in the jungle lasting from three days. Vacationers are picked up by a bus in Manaus early in the morning, by lunchtime the group ends up by the river, where the participants get over by canoe and go to impassable thickets. 97% of the Amazon forests are untouched, so there are big chance to go where no one has really been before. The program includes fishing, crocodile hunting, jungle walks, visiting tribes, swimming with dolphins. Overnight is arranged in hammocks in a makeshift camp. Cooking takes place in field conditions, with the exception of visiting villages where you can have a bite to eat. This is the most breathtaking type of excursion, on no other it is possible to learn so much about the jungle. In addition, this is the most budget option. The cost per person is about 335 reais for a three-day tour (5300 rubles). You can choose 7-day, 11-day, 15-day tours.

In addition to Manaus, you can choose another city as a travel destination - Manacapura, Alvaraes. Or the neighborhood of Manaus, a little remote, but less populated - Ipiranga, San Pedro, Parikatuba.

The territory of the Amazonian jungle is huge, the main thing is not to get lost! Keep up with the group during excursions, do not come close to animals and birds without a guide, even if they seem harmless to you. Do not swim in unknown waters, do not touch the leaves and stems of unknown plants, they may be poisonous. Wash your hands thoroughly before eating, there is a very high risk of developing intestinal infections. You don't want to ruin your vacation. The yellow fever vaccination is now not mandatory for everyone entering Brazil, but it is better not to risk your health, and if you still dare to travel to the Amazon, then it is better to do it. She definitely won't hurt you.
