Koh Lipe is the perfect island for a beach holiday in Thailand. How to get to Koh Lipe

Yesterday at 8 in the morning we left the house and by lunchtime we were already in Krabi. We settled in a guest house in the town and, without wasting time on showering and changing clothes, we immediately went to Ao Nang. We walked along the familiar streets, looked into the condo where we used to live, got acquainted with the readers in the evening. Closer to the night in the town met with friends from Hua Hin. And this morning everyone started together on Koh Lipe.

How to get from Phuket to Koh Lipe

Rassada pier in Phuket is located near Phuket Town. One of the pink city buses goes there. But since the departure time is at 8 am, it will be easiest to take a taxi from your hotel in Phuket or from the bus station in the town. You can order a taxi to Rassada Pier via the Internet by this link.

From Phuket to Koh Lipe by plane

Another convenient option. From Phuket, you can take a direct Bangkok Airways flight to Hat Yai, and from there take a minibus to Pak Bara Pier, then a speedboat to Koh Lipe. Here is a link to Flight Phuket-Hat Yai.

How to get further? I don’t know for sure, but at the airport, they may offer you right away complex ticket by minibus and boat to Koh Lipe. We ourselves went on a different route, so I'm not sure that there will be an opportunity to buy such a ticket.

If there are no offers, go to the Hat Yai bus station, from which you will take a bus to Pakbara Pier. Then by speedboat to the island of Lipe. You can order bus + boat tickets at 12goAsia website.

Phuket-Trang bus, minibus to Pak Bara pier, boat to Koh Lipe

Go to Phuket Bus Station bus terminal 2 and buy tickets for the Phuket-Trang bus. You can’t buy such tickets online anywhere, only at the box office of the station. Tickets will cost about 300 baht give or take. When you arrive in Trang, right at the station you can buy a minibus ticket to Pak Bara Pier. Here is a website where you can buy a combined ticket for minibus and boat Trang – Ko Lipe.

If you need to stay overnight in Trang, book a hotel Booking at this link.

How we got to Koh Lipe from Phuket

We were driving on the ground. In Krabi, friends were waiting for us in a car. We stopped for the night in Krabi Town, and in the morning we left by car in the direction of Pakbar Pier. Driving from Krabi takes about 3-4 hours. Next, I will tell you how we spent the evening in Krabi, visited Ao Nang beach, as well as our first impressions of Koh Lipe.

Evening in Krabi

We got to Krabi by minibus in 3 hours from the central bus station, 140 baht per person. The driver, apparently, was a former motorbiker - he threw himself on the power engineer all the way and drove quite aggressively. They noted for themselves that in the future it is better to avoid trips on minibuses.

Ao Nang is not the best beach in Thailand

What's new to tell you about Krabi? We walked around Ao Nang. We got a little nostalgic. Wanted to give the beach a second chance, but… Ao Nang Beach is really disappointing! This is how we wrote an article 2 years ago, everything is still the same! Dirty muddy brown water, sand that hurts to walk on, muddy bottom… Noise from motor boats this one stands, as if it were not a seashore, but a construction site with bulldozers ... Only the situation is saved unique mountains Krabi. If there were no mountains, there would be nothing to do there at all. Who would have thought that in such an advertised resort with beautiful name, Krabi, one of worst beaches Thailand

We are in Krabi!

The guys are completely snickering, someone will think ... I don’t know, maybe it’s true, especially after. I hope Ao Nang lovers will forgive me, but the bottom in the Moscow River looks exactly the same

Dirty Ao Nang Beach

By the way, in the far left corner, a full-flowing stink river flows into the sea. Very very smelly

Krabi is the most expensive mainland resort in Thailand.

Prices in Krabi are a separate conversation. There is a myth among travelers that Phuket is the most expensive island… Nonsense! Ao Nang is much more expensive than Phuket! Is Phuket expensive? The most expensive route in Phuket costs 40 baht, and the songteo from Ao Nang to the town is 50 baht.

Nepalese

Nepalese everywhere! In all stalls in Nepalese. They are very easy to identify by their disgruntled facial expressions and Indian appearance. Katya forgot her glasses on the bus, she had to buy new ones. In Phuket, in any tent, sunglasses are 100 baht. These impudent Nepalese muzzles tell us 350. One has only to be indignant at what it is such a triple cheat, as they wave their hand at you and defiantly leave. I'm not even saying that their etiquette does not include the elementary "Hello" and a smile to the buyer. They sit with disgruntled faces, buried in the phone.

Sunset

We met the guys living in Krabi, who, as it turned out, have been reading our blog for a long time. They are not even offended that we wrote at one time about Krabi not the most best reviews(the truth). Enjoyed a wonderful sunset together.

krabi town

Here in the town everything is in Thai. We ate hearty soup for 80 baht and pancakes with a banana for dessert. Met up with friends from Hua Hin and drove to Makro. For a dream to come, they issued a beer and sleep.

We had to get up early the next morning. We had a bite of sandwiches and coffee from 7-11 and drove further by car towards the Pakbar pier.

Koh Lipe - first impressions

We will definitely describe the island of Koh Lipe in more detail. While sharing my first impressions. The water is clean and transparent. But not turquoise, as in the Similans.

First impressions of Koh Lipe

  • You have to pay for every step - for a ticket for a speedboat, for a passage to the pier, for a boat from a speedboat to the beach, for an entrance to the island
  • There are no bounty beaches here
  • The beaches are crowded with boats
  • A lot of garbage and devastation, one has only to get off the central Walking Street
  • Grocery stores are more expensive. Prices in tourist cafes are about the same as everywhere else - dishes for 100-150 baht
  • Lots of Russian tourists
  • Many tourists of other nationalities
  • In the evening, there is music, fire shows and cozy bars on the beach, just like in Goa
  • The island is a large market with restaurants, bars and hotels among the malls.

By the way, main beach on Koh Lipe is called Pattaya Beach

We did not want to spend the night in cheap thatched bungalows, this is only romantic for those who have never been to the tropics. Checked into a decent hotel. A day as much as 2000 baht ($ 55). Well, it's Koh Lipe, that's fine!! Everything is cool, the hotel is new, the bed is clean, but ... No hot water! Well, how is it possible, huh?? For 2 thousand baht a day they rent rooms and cannot buy at least some cheap water heaters!

Swimming at Sunset Beach. Not much fun. There was a low tide, very shallow, literally knee-deep, and there were a lot of stones at the bottom, but we didn’t take swimming shoes. Tomorrow we will swim in Pattaya or go for reconnaissance to the third beach. For beach holidays on this island, see a new article.

  • Read:

Ko Lipe is considered a national park. We paid 200 baht ($6) for entry. And on the island itself, there are a lot of such filthy places where garbage, building materials, something dug up and then abandoned. I understand what the Thais themselves put on nature. But is it really so difficult to somehow ennoble everything, since they charge money for entry? Thousands of tourists from all over the world come here, but it’s not a shame for them to plant srach and not clean up anything later.

Ko Lipe is not the same (c)

Our friends are not happy either. In the evening we ate in a cafe, took Chang and went to the beach. The mood has improved, we liked the evening Pattai Beach. So, while the impressions of Ko Lipe are ambiguous.

Have any of you been to this island? Write, how do you like it? What did you like, what didn't you like? Where to eat deliciously, what excursions did you take?

PS: I’m already looking forward to the comments of smart people, such as “with what attitude you drove, you got it” or “what you see inside, you see from the outside” and similar philosophical nonsense. So, I answer right away, we drove with a great mood and expected to see the level of Similan :)

Added the next day: today all morning we swam on Pattaya beach and adjacent beach. Wonderful blue water, from which you do not want to get out! The mood and impressions of the island are improving!

Please note that both airlines are low-cost carriers, I do not fly from the main airport Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and from Don Muang Airport.

How to get to Koh Lipe by boat

During the low season, only one boat can take you to Koh Lipe. It departs at 11:30 from Pak Bara Pier.

Koh Lipe island is part of the Adang Ravi archipelago, located in the Andaman Sea at a distance of 70 kilometers west of the coast of Satun Province (in the south it borders on Malaysia). On the map, its name can be indicated in different ways: Koh Lipe, Ko Lipe or Ko Lipey. The island of Langkawi is forty kilometers to the east - but this is already Malaysian territory.

The island of Koh Lipe in Thailand, despite its small area (about two square kilometers), is truly paradise on the edge of Thailand. A little more than 700 people live on it, all of them come from Malaysia and are members of the same Chao Lei tribe (Chao Lei), which is often called sea gypsies.

Koh Lipe island in Thailand practically unknown Russian tourist, and those who have been there note an unusually clear sea and magnificent beaches with white sand. This piece of sushi will be boring for those who love crowded parties and extreme entertainment. Daytime relaxation on the shore is replaced by quiet gatherings in one of the many bars. By midnight, life on the island completely stops. Many add to its attractiveness. uninhabited islets nearby, where you can spend the whole day in seclusion - fishing, snorkeling and.

Despite the Andaman Sea teeming with wildlife around, you will not find a special variety in seafood dishes. But everything that is on the plates is guaranteed fresh. In addition, at very affordable prices. If you are not attracted to a permanent fish day, you can go to a restaurant, and there are many of them serving familiar European dishes. In general, the cost of a check in a restaurant is the same as on.

If you want to see something in Thailand that is not yet too trampled by tourists, you should hurry up with a visit to this island. Behind last years the pressure of civilization intensified. For example, electricity is provided 24 hours a day, there is even the Internet (although the speed is not so hot). Bungalows on the beach are replaced by pretty decent hotels.

Beaches

Famous for the beaches. It has four sections of the coast - Karma Beach, Sunrise Beach, Sunset Beach and Pattaya Beach. Unpretentious and seeking privacy, you can advise Bila Beach and Sanom Beach. There are even wilder and smaller ones. All parts of the coast are connected by paths and it will not be difficult to get around them in a few hours. You can stop wherever you like.

Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach on Koh Lipe (also known as Hat Pramong) is the smallest beach compared to the two main ones - Sunrise and Pattaya. It is located in a secluded lagoon with large boulders sticking out of the sand and water. Stunning sunsets open from this place, gathering a crowd of onlookers.

Sunrise Beach on Koh Lipe (also known as Hat Chao Ley Beach due to its proximity to the native village of Chao Ley) has the longest coastline and a wonderful view of the nearby mountain island Ko Adang.

Despite the fact that Sunrise Beach is less visited than Pattaya Beach, it constantly attracts tourists who love diving at shallow depths. This beach is probably the best place for this kind of activity. A large number of representatives underwater world floating in this area is sure to amaze vacationers.

Tourists visit it first of all in order to admire the most beautiful sunrise (translated into Russian, this beach is called "Sunrise") and enjoy the cool breeze on hot days.

Pattaya Beach is called “postcard Koh Lipe” because of its beauty. This is the main beach of the island with 1.5 kilometers of absolute white sand with turquoise water. In addition, this beach is crossed by Walking Street, which attracts tourists from all over the island.

Some tourists visit Pattaya Beach to taste the menu in dozens of restaurants, bars and cafes, others to play volleyball, frisbee, go kayaking, get a massage or spa treatments in one of the salons, or just take a nap in a hammock under palm trees. .

In the evening, fishermen from Chao Lei village come here to catch crabs. This time is considered very interesting for visiting the beach.

Entertainment

The island of Koh Lipe in Southern Thailand is quiet and patriarchal. From entertainment, you will be offered fishing, diving and snorkeling, as well as excursions to the islands, of which there are countless in the Tarutao Marine National Park - from uninhabited rocks to relatively large and well-inhabited ones.

In the evening, you can choose one of the many restaurants, focusing on taste preferences (European or), the level of service and prices. Most of them are located on Walking Street - a street that stretches across the entire island from Pattaya Beach to Sunrise Beach (not to be confused with).

Climate

Koh Lipe is the closest in Thailand to the equator. Therefore, there is a pronounced tropical climate, in which there are only two seasons - rainy , from the end of April to November; and dry- the rest of the year. best weather And the largest number tourists stay on the island December to January.

If you are not afraid of occasional rains and you want relative peace, go to Koh Lipe at the end or at the beginning of the high season - October and November, as well as February and March.

April to September the most risky period: there is a storm at sea, and the rains are protracted. However, miracles also happen when there is not a cloud in the sky for a whole week.

Hotels

Koh Lipe hotels in Thailand very diverse in terms of comfort and price. You can find a very cheap guesthouse with one air conditioner or stay in a room with all conceivable European amenities. It should be noted that during the low season most of hotels are closed and the choice is severely limited. The minimum price per night is 500 baht. A decent room at the beginning and end of the high season from 1.5 to 2 thousand baht. At the peak of tourist excitement, prices soar - they are twice as high. However, due to the growing popularity of the island, you should take care of booking a hotel on websites or one and a half or two months in advance. Otherwise, you risk being left on the street.

How to get there

The answer to the question about how to get to koh lipe island in thailand is both complex and simple at the same time. there is not, they go from the mainland. In (late April to November) the only departure point is Pak Bara Pier. In other months, you can get there from the island of Langkawi (there is an airport), Pier Pier near Trang or from Phuket, going to all the islands, starting from Phi Phi. Airports are located in the cities of Trang and Hat Yai, the latter is more comfortable. For those who are not in a particular hurry, you can get to the ferry departure points either by. Preference should be given to state-owned companies. With private traders, most likely you will make more than one transplant. Try looking for tickets on a Thai public transport booking service.

But there is no pier on Koh Lipe, in the low season or with strong waves in the sea, boats arrive at the shore on, and in the high season - on. Some speedboats (including ours) are parked near the shore, and some boats are further from the shore, and transported to the beach on longtails for 50 baht per person.

Landing on the island of Koh Lipe

Loading and unloading luggage is still a circus: things are thrown right over the water and it seems that the suitcase is about to fall into the sea, so do not let valuables be loaded into the boat, but keep them with you! Luggage is packed at the stern, and in some places even on the roof of the boat, so that the suitcase may arrive wet and dirty ...

It is better to buy such a ticket in advance on this site, firstly it will be cheaper (~ 700 baht), and secondly, you will not have to wait long at the airport until tourists from other flights are collected.

We got to Koh Lipe just from I thought for a very long time how to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket. Decided to choose sea route🙂 I immediately dismissed speed boats (I couldn’t stand 4-5 hours in such a speed boat, even an hour and a half was enough for me 🙂), I wanted to sail on the Tiger Line Ferry, for some reason I imagined such big ferry, the same as or like us 🙂

But after reading the reviews, I realized that it’s better to choose another option on how to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket 🙂 In the reviews, people complained about the old boat and frequent long delays, they wrote that the boat didn’t take 4 hours, as stated, but almost twice longer! After reading the reviews, I decided to choose another way to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket, namely the more standard way through Hat Yai and Pakbaru.

Option 2: via Hat Yai and Pakbara

By bus

From Phuket to Hat Yat can be reached by bus. Buses run from 6 am to 9:45 pm, travel time is about 8 hours, the cost is from 300 to 600 baht, depending on the class of the bus. Tickets can be bought at the bus station in Phuket Town or on the website.

By plane

Bangkok Air direct flight from Phuket to Hat Yai. Departure at 7:25, arrival at 8:30. More recently, there was an evening flight at 19:25, but on this moment I don't see it on the schedule. The cost is about 1700 baht, including luggage and even breakfast on board 🙂 Check the cost and buy tickets Phuket - Hat Yai >>

We chose this option how to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket. Everything went smoothly: at 5:30 in the morning we ordered a taxi to our condo, at 6:15 we were already at Phuket airport, checked in our luggage, drank coffee in a coffee shop, loaded into a small plane, had breakfast 🙂 We arrived in Hat Yai even earlier than the time indicated in schedule.

I wanted to buy tickets for the transfer airport - pier - Koh Lipe in advance online on the site (it turned out cheaper), but while I was thinking if we would have time for the minibus, which leaves at 9 am (we would have had time and even with a large margin), ticket sales stopped (Tickets can be purchased online no later than three days in advance). Therefore, we found a tour agency at the airport, where we bought a mini-bass + speedboat complex ticket. But I had to more than an hour wait for passengers from other flights.

We were at the Pakbara pier at 11:15, where the purchased tickets must be exchanged for numbers for boarding the boat (the numbers are very convenient - there is no queue). We sailed instead of the promised 11:30 at 12:00, and arrived at Ko Lipe at 14:00 - due to the storm and rain that started along the way, the boat sailed more slowly and arrived at Sunrise Beach, and not at the opposite beach. It was even more convenient for us: our hotel was literally a few steps from the place where the boat arrived 🙂

Hurray, it's our turn to load into the boat 🙂
In the boat we are waiting for the departure to Koh Lipe

How to get to Lipe Island from Krabi

From Krabi, you can get to Koh Lipe via Hat Yai. There are no direct flights from Krabi to Hat Yai, and in my opinion, it is not advisable to fly through Bangkok, so you can get there by bus, minibus or taxi. The distance to the pier is only about 300 km.

Minibus tickets to Hat Yai from will cost 350 - 400 baht, a complex ticket Ao Nang (Krabi) - Koh Lipe - 1000 - 1200 baht. You can buy at any travel agency or hotel.

To get to Koh Lipe from / / you need to follow the path described above: first you need to get to Hat Yai, then to Pakbaru, and then by boat on Lipe 🙂 The path is not close ... Read about how to get to Hat Yai from Koh Samui in

Despite the fact that Lipe is a Thai island, only 30 km separates it from the Malaysian one, and in clear weather it can be clearly seen from the observation deck. playground sky bridge in Langkawi 🙂

Direct route Langkawi - Lipe

In the high season, boats run on the route Langkawi - Lipe and Lipe - Langkawi. On the island of Koh Lipe, there are even immigration offices where passport control is carried out.

Boats / boats from Langkawi arrive at Pattaya Beach on Lipe (read about all the beaches of Koh Lipe). They depart from two piers to Langkawi:

  • from the Kauh Jetty pier (in the capital of the island of Kuah, near the symbol of the city of the eagle)
  • from Telaga Harbor Pier, which is next to Oriental park Village

We sailed in the opposite direction (i.e. from Lipe to Langkawi) and I specifically chose the carrier whose boats arrive at the Telaga pier, because. first of all in Langkawi she planned to check into the Geopark Hotel, visit Oriental Village, sky bridge and a nearby waterfall, which are within a short drive from this jetty.

Boat timetable from Lipe Island Lost heaven

Koh Lipe is a tiny island in the Andaman Sea in the very south of Thailand.
I first visited it at the end of 2006.
And I realized that I had found a place for which I have only one definition - this is paradise!
In Thailand, there are places that are perhaps even more beautiful, such as the postcard Phi Phi Don.

But on Lipa there was a unique combination of beauty, a special atmosphere, nature almost untouched by man, and what was pleasing separately was a very small number of people.

I was constantly pulled back.
But as often happens, when something is close to you and easily achievable, then you choose it last.
So having traveled almost all over the past 5 years South East Asia, the second time I got to Lipe only this February.

They flew from Bangkok. First, we watched the planes landing for a bit.

airport

and here is our plane

Then a taxi, a boat and the first thing we see when we land on the island:

Oops, too late, heaven is gone...
There are now many hotels on the island, most of the beaches have turned into moorings for boats and everywhere people, people, people.

Fortunately, it turned out that not everything is so sad! And pieces of the former paradise can still be found.

Fantastic water color.
White, fine sand.

My sister was on the island for the first time, she did not suffer from comparisons with what had been before.
Therefore, her verdict is the best place in Thailand.

Every day we dined at the Daya Resort restaurant, by the sea, by candlelight.
Freshly caught fish is brought to them right before dinner. Grilled.
We ordered a grouper there - it's great!

In the mornings we went for a walk around the islet, you can walk around it in a few hours

Clear-clear water with lively underwater life
It is interesting to swim with a mask. Watching the fish.
During the week we saw several moray eels, stingrays, boxfish, shoals of fish... But we saw the most interesting living creatures from the shore. Fortunately!!!

The meeting was unforgettable. We walked in the evening from the restaurant along the coast. The water was well illuminated by the lanterns of one of the hotels. At the same time as my sister, we saw some multi-meter hose swaying in the surf near the shore. As a joke (because this does not happen), they suggested that it was a snake. We managed to agree, with each other, that this is probably a loose cable from one of the boats. We approached almost close to the shore and then the "cable" floated into the sea with several smooth, sliding movements. Fantastic! It was a snake, after all. At least 4-5 meters long.

With all my love to photograph and dislike to be photographed.
A rare photo in which my sister and I are together.
I reflect in glasses)))

local wildlife

Sea gypsies inhabit the island

Cheerful chorus girls sat and proudly drank their soda.
And only the girl on the far right thought that life was not fair and for some reason she didn’t get soda.
The decision matured for about five minutes. All the fun ended in a fight with a scuffle)))

Beggar. Literally asked for something to eat)

Farewell look at the beloved island

The only photo left from a day in Hat Yai. Small pleasant Thai town.
No special attractions. But the lanterns impressed

And a couple of orchids from the airport to Hat Yai for last

Is it worth going to the island now? For me, the answer is clear. Yes!
Lipe still remains one of the best and most beautiful places in Thailand.
On it you can still find deserted beaches. And some amazing views.
How long? I think no. A couple more years and the last bits of paradise will be swallowed up by more hotels, bars and boat docks.
So you need to seize the moment now. There are not so many places like this island in the world.

Practical information.

How to get to Koh Lipe:

1. Evening train to Hat Yai, then by minivan to Pakbara + boat to Koh Lipe.
On the train, it is better to take second class with a fan (with air conditioning - this is death from icing). It costs about 900 baht one way.
Minivan + boat 450-700 baht, depending on the company where you buy the transfer.

2. Hat Yai can also be reached by plane. The cheapest tickets can be bought from AirAsia.
If you buy much in advance and for a promotion, you can get it almost for free :)
My tickets bought 8 months before the flight cost 400 baht for the flight Bangkok - Hat Yai - Bangkok.
Sister's tickets, which were bought about a month before departure, cost 3 thousand baht
To get to Lipe on the same day, choose the first morning flights.

From the airport by minivan to the bus station (80 baht per person). From the bastion, as in the first version, to Pakbara, etc.
You can take a taxi to Pakbara. The price is 2-2.5 thousand baht.

Where to live on Lipa:
My choice Mountain Resort - great beach, great location.
If you want to save money, then there is Andaman Resort nearby.
You can book here.
