Botanical Park

Botanical Park Palanga is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea, covered in shadow pine forest And sand dunes in the city of Palanga. Before its current name, the park was renamed several times. It was called Birutes, Tyshkeviciaus and Palanga parks. It was founded at the beginning of the twentieth century, and its author is considered to be the French architect Edouard Francois Andre.

In the center of the park, surrounded by greenery and flowers, stands the majestic palace of the Tyszkiewicz counts, which seems to have played its last ball just yesterday. It is worth noting that the count bought the future Palanga in 1824 and turned the gloomy wetland into a popular seaside resort, which over time came to be called the Baltic Baden-Baden. The count decorated the area around his residence in an elegant style, the garden was looked after by the best gardeners, and there is a rose garden near the building.

One of the pearls of the park is the swan pond. The shore line of the reservoir is designed in such a way that when looking at it, the pond appears larger than it actually is. It is edged with black alder and spirea, which mysteriously hang over the curves of the reservoir, creating the impression of water movement.

Mostly pine trees grow in the park. Time and wind bent their trunks into bizarre zigzags. The sun's rays breaking through the needles create an interesting play of chiaroscuro, resulting in beautiful photographs. The park glades are sheltered from the wind by bushes and trees, so it is cozy here even in the windiest weather.

Today, the park's territory is about 100 hectares, of which half a hectare is occupied by flower beds, trees cover 60 hectares, and ponds cover more than a hectare.

In the evenings, park workers turn on the illuminations, which put you in a romantic mood and make it seem like you have become the hero of a magical story.

All houses and hotels in Palanga stretch along the Baltic Sea, and the residential streets of the city are separated from the sea only by a strip of pine forest. We recommend choosing accommodation on the first line - this way you can admire the peaceful forest from the window, and you can walk to the sea in a maximum of 5 minutes. Vila Medus(Neringos g. 42) just one of these accommodation facilities. The small guest house is located right next to the forest, which hides the sea behind it. For € 35 per night for two you can stay here in a cozy room with all the amenities and floor-to-ceiling windows. Write to the hostess in advance that you want a room with a view of the forest, and in the morning, without getting out of bed, you can admire one of the most peaceful views of your life.

Palanga Park Hotel(S. Dariaus ir S. Gireno 11) – a hotel with an excellent location for those who like to live closer to the action. It is located near the main street of the city – Basanavičius. Within a 10-minute walk from the hotel you can reach the main attractions of the town - the Amber Museum and Botanical Garden. A double room at Palanga Park Hotel will cost approximately €55 per night.

If you want to go crazy, choose a boutique hotel Smilčių Vilos(Smilčių g. 67), which is located just 10 minutes walk from the sea. Several buildings included in hotel, are already remarkable in themselves - the buildings look very modern and designer-like. The hotel's courtyard is also very cozy and ideal for evening gatherings. An overnight stay in a double room here will cost €90 (breakfast included).

Budget travelers also have a place to stay. For example, in Surf Hostel(Medvalakio g. 12A)– a modern, bright hostel with a cool “surfer” interior. An overnight stay in a shared room for eight will cost €24 per person.

Another good hostel - Symbiosis (Klaipėdos pl. 62a)– located near the Palanga bus station. There are cool, cozy rooms with fresh renovations and new furniture. You will have to walk about half an hour to the sea, but next to the hostel there is free parking. Prices are quite affordable: from € 14 for an overnight stay in a shared room, and € 30 for a double room.

Palanga is a small seaside town where people go rather to relax from impressions and an oversaturated cultural program. But there are still attractions here - and they all fit perfectly into the leisurely atmosphere that hovers here.

The main museum in the city is Amber Museum(Vytauto g. 17) is located in an ancient palace that once belonged to Count Tyszkiewicz. The museum's exposition fully corresponds to its name - there are about 30 thousand exhibits, and all of it is amber. Rumor has it that this is the largest such collection in the world. The exhibition with amber is located on the second floor of the palace, and on the first floor you can get a closer look at the life and everyday life of the counts Tyshkevich themselves. In the halls, the interiors of those times are recreated, and you can look, for example, into the countess’s office or imagine yourself as a big man in the ceremonial hall. A ticket to the museum costs €3 for an adult and €1.5 for a child.

Adjacent to the Amber Museum is another major attraction, which not only Palanga, but the whole of Lithuania is proud of - this Birute Park(Vytauto g. 15). Locals love to boast that this is the most beautiful and well-kept park in the whole country - and they have every reason to do so. Once upon a time, the park was laid out by order of the same Counts Tyshkevich. In Birut today you can feel like you are in the 19th century - there are well-groomed flower beds and bushes all around, and people walking along the paths dressed in costumes from the times of the first owners of the palace. By the way, quite a lot of events are held in the park: for example, in the summer three times a week, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the Palanga orchestra performs here. There is no need to pay to visit the park.

Another popular place in the city for walks fresh airSculpture Park(Vytauto g. 39A). Here you can look at 28 sculptures by modern Lithuanian (and not only) sculptors.

Don't lose sight Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Vytauto g. 51), which towers over the city and looks very impressive. The impressive red brick building in the neo-Gothic style was built in 1987 with the financial support of Count Felix Tyszkiewicz. Look inside to see the high vaults of the church and its discreet decoration. But keep in mind that you can’t always get there - check the service hours on the church’s website first. By the way, there is an Orthodox church in Palanga Church of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God (Sodų g. 52), which is worth a look because of its atypical nature Orthodox churches architecture.

On main street cities - Basanavičiaus(J. Basanavičiaus)– your feet will lead you themselves. This is the most active part of Palanga, and it is along this street that almost all the cafes, restaurants and bars in the city are located. There are always a lot of people here, because Basanavičiausa is actually the center of Palanga and its oldest part. Along the street, among others, are the very first buildings built in the city. These are wooden holiday villas, not the most attractive in appearance, but protected by the state as a cultural property.

Directly from Basanavičiaus you will go to another main attraction of Palanga - the sea pier. The very first pier was built here under the Tyshkevichs - they hoped to develop shipping in Palanga, but it didn’t work out. Therefore, the pier began to be used for idle walks. Later, in our time, a new, more reliable structure was built here. Go to the pier to admire the beautiful and cold Baltic Sea, listen to the cries of seagulls and look at the sandy shore from afar.
