Another option is the train Vilnius - Klaipeda, which departs from the Vilnius railway station five times a day and costs from € 15 one way. There is nothing to go from Klaipeda to Palanga, use the local intercity bus - you can check the schedule.

If you decide to travel around Palanga by bus (although this does not make much sense), you can look at the routes and timetables for public transport. There is no Uber in the city, but there are other taxi services.

Palanga is a rather tiny town with squat buildings. There is even a special law here prohibiting the construction of housing that would exceed the height of a pine forest. It looks cool - a complete fusion of natural and man-made. All the houses and hotels of Palanga stretch along the Baltic Sea, and the residential streets of the city are separated from the sea only by a strip of pine forest. We recommend choosing housing on the front page - so you can admire the peaceful forest from the window, and you can walk to the sea in a maximum of 5 minutes. Villa Medusa(Neringos g. 42) just one of those accommodations. A small guest house is located right next to the forest, which hides the sea. For € 35 per night for two, you can stay here in a cozy room with all amenities and floor-to-ceiling windows. Write to the hostess in advance that you want a room overlooking the forest, and in the morning, without getting out of bed, you can admire one of the most peaceful views in your life.

Modern Apartment in Palanga(S.neries g. 37)- apartments in the city center and, moreover, not far from the sea. For a day in a cozy apartment with a good view from the window, you will pay almost € 100, but it has its own kitchen and an open balcony for breakfast.

Palanga Park Hotel(S. Dariaus ir S. Gireno 11) - a hotel with an excellent location for those who like to live closer to the traffic. It is located near the main street of the city - Basanavičius. In 10 minutes from the hotel you can walk to the main attractions of the town - the Amber Museum and the Botanical Garden. Double room in Palanga Park Hotel will cost about € 55 per day.

If you want to splurge - choose a boutique hotel Smilčių Vilos(Smilčių g. 67), which is located just 10 minutes walk from the sea. Several buildings included in the hotel complex are already remarkable in themselves - the buildings look very modern and designer. The hotel courtyard is also very cozy and ideal for evening gatherings. An overnight stay in a double room will cost € 90 (breakfast included).

Budget travelers also have a place to stumble. For example, in Surf Hostel(Medvalakio g. 12A)– a modern bright hostel with a cool “surfer” interior. Overnight in a shared room for eight will cost € 24 per person.

Another good hostel Symbiosis (Klaipėdos pl. 62a)– located near the bus station of Palanga. Here are cool cozy rooms with fresh renovation and new furniture. You will have to walk to the sea for about half an hour, but next to the hostel there free parking. Prices are quite affordable: from €14 for an overnight stay in a shared room, and €30 for a double room.

Palanga is a small seaside town, where people go rather to take a break from impressions and oversaturated cultural program. But there are still sights here - and they all fit perfectly into the leisurely atmosphere hovering here.

The main museum in the city Amber Museum(Vytauto g. 17) is located in an old palace that once belonged to Count Tyszkiewicz. The exposition of the museum fully corresponds to its name - there are about 30 thousand exhibits, and all this is amber. Rumor has it that this is the largest such collection in the world. The exposition with amber is located on the second floor of the palace, and on the first floor you can get a closer look at the life and way of life of the counts Tyszkiewicz themselves. The interiors of those times are recreated in the halls, and you can look, for example, into the countess's office or imagine yourself as a big person in the ceremonial hall. A ticket to the museum costs €3 for an adult and €1.5 for a child.

Adjacent to the Amber Museum is another major attraction that not only Palanga, but the whole of Lithuania is proud of - this Birute Park(Vytauto g. 15). Locals like to boast that this is the most beautiful and well-groomed park in the whole country - and they have every reason to do so. Once upon a time, the park was laid out by order of the same Counts Tyszkiewicz. In Birut even today you can feel like you are in the 19th century - there are well-groomed flower beds and bushes all around, and people dressed in costumes from the times of the first owners of the palace are walking along the paths. By the way, quite a lot of events are held in the park: for example, in the summer three times a week, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the Palanga orchestra performs here. You don't have to pay to visit the park.

Another popular place in the city for walking on fresh airsculpture park(Vytauto g. 39A). Here you can take a look at 28 statues of modern Lithuanian (and not only) sculptors.

If you come to Palanga with children, look into Dog Museum (Taikos g. 8). This is a private collection of figurines of dogs. As many as 4 thousand exhibits! One of the owners of the museum is the artist Vytautas Kusas, so you can see his paintings here.

Don't lose sight Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Vytauto g. 51), which rises above the city and looks very impressive. The imposing neo-Gothic red brick building was built in 1987 with the financial support of Count Felix Tyszkiewicz. Look inside to see the church's tall vaults and discreet decoration. But keep in mind that it is not always possible to get there - check first with the hours of services on the church website. By the way, in Palanga there is an Orthodox Church of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God (Sodų g. 52), which is worth a look because of its atypical architecture for Orthodox churches.

On the main street of the city - Basanaviciaus(J. Basanaviciaus) your feet will take you. This is the most moving part of Palanga, and it is along this street that almost all the cafes, restaurants and bars of the city are located. People are always decent here, because Basanavičiaus is actually the center of Palanga and its oldest part. Along the street, among others, are the very first buildings built in the city. These are wooden holiday villas, not the most attractive in appearance, but protected by the state as a cultural property.

Directly from Basanavičiaus you will go to another main attraction of Palanga - the sea pier. The very first pier was built here under the Tyshkeviches - they hoped to develop shipping in Palanga, but it did not work out. Therefore, the pier began to be used for idle walks. Later, in our time, a new, more reliable structure was built here. Come to the pier to admire such a beautiful and such a cold Baltic Sea, listen to the cries of seagulls and look at the sandy shore from afar.

ACTIVITIES

The Baltic city is adored by lovers of healthy lifestyles and outdoor activities: there will always be someone riding a bike, jogging or pacing past you here Nordic walking. And if you are far from all this, perhaps it is in Palanga that you will be inspired to run your first hundred meters along the sea.

The favorite of all local and visiting cyclists is the Palanga long bike path. On it you can get right up to the Latvian Liepaja or to neighboring Klaipeda. It passes through the forest along the sea, as well as some of the sights of Palanga, for example, the Amber Museum. Bicycles can be rented - here are the checkpoint addresses of points.

If you prefer not to pedal, but to run on your own two feet, you will appreciate treadmill "Labritis" in the thick of the Palanga pine forest. The length of the looped path is 6 kilometers. Here you can work out on the street simulators.

IN Palanga sports complex (Sporto g. 3) You can sip iron in the gym or play tennis. Next to the brand new building of the complex there is a football stadium and running tracks.

If you are traveling with children, we advise you to look into Palanga summer park (J. Basanaviciaus g. 43) with slides, trampolines and other fun (tickets from € 17), Palanga Fairy Park (S. Daukanto g. 24A) with unusual sculptures and installations and children's park (Šermukšnių g. 1) with great playgrounds.

Popular sights of Palanga with photo

One of the historical sights of Palanga is the Tyszkiewicz Palace. Since 1824, the whole area of the future Palanga belonged to the family of the count. It was under their leadership that an inconspicuous wetland turned into popular resort. The palace, built in 1893-1897, of course, does not look like medieval stone castles, and is intended not for royalty, but for Count F. Tyszkiewicz.

Previously, this place was an ancient wooden "fortress". Despite the height of only 2 floors, now it looks quite impressive - a snow-white building, made in the neo-Renaissance style, decorated with baroque elements. In the immediate vicinity there is a small chapel, which is connected to the main building by a special passage. It was erected around 1900, with a statue of Jesus Christ placed next to it.

The botanical garden in Palanga greatly decorates the area around the palace, in which, in addition to the usual ones, exotic plants are also planted. It was not destined to admire the beautiful estate for long, since it was pretty much destroyed during the First World War, and after the Second World War the estate was completely nationalized, which led to desolation.

People became interested in the palace only in 1963, when the Amber Museum was opened here, which works here to this day. Now the collection presented here includes almost 30,000 different items, and the exhibitions tell about all the stages of human interaction with this "solar" stone.

Since the Baltics are famous for their large amber reserves, there is another place associated with them - these are amber workshops. This is not surprising, since this sun stone began to be mined and processed here already in the 3rd century BC. Whereas to XIX century Palanga has become big industrial center for the processing of this stone.

Since 2003, workshops have been opened here, where you can see all the stages of the processing process and purchase your favorite product.

The Šliupas Manor allows you to get acquainted with the fate of an outstanding person, whose life was closely connected with this city. It was in this house, which is now a museum, that he lived for many years. A comprehensive education was received in Russia and the USA, in 1930 he returned to his native town, becoming its first burgomaster.

In addition to the personal belongings of Sliupas, here you can learn a lot of interesting facts about Palanga. The museum itself opened in 1995, and most of the exhibits arrived in 2011.

What else to see in Palanga? tallest building in the city at 76 meters, and also one of the most famous, is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, located on Vytautas Street.

It was built relatively recently, at the beginning of the 20th century, in the Neo-Gothic style, so the building looks rather gloomy from the outside. Despite this, the interior decoration is luxurious, with old frescoes and important icons, as well as marble trim and silver altars. Today, the church is perfectly preserved, and is included in the number cultural monuments Lithuania.

Palanga for art lovers

After Lithuania gained independence, not many centers of contemporary art were formed here. One of these is the house-museum of Antanas Monchys, who is a famous sculptor born in Lithuania in the 20th century.

Despite the fact that he lived and worked in, he presented many of his works to the city. Sculpture is not his only hobby. Creativity has found its realization in various compositions, drawings, graphic works. Among the main materials with which the author worked are: amber, plastic, stone, clay, bone and wood.

Note: The main condition for the exhibition of his works, Antanas Monchys called the opportunity for everyone to learn art with the help of tactile sensations. This means that all works can and should be touched by hands.

Among not quite ordinary museums, one can single out the Museum of Dogs - the only exposition in the Baltics dedicated to these animals. The basis of the exhibition was a private collection of a Kusas couple. They started collecting figurines and various things related to dogs in 1991, and already in 2010 they opened the doors of their workshop to visitors.

Now there are collected about 3000 copies. For the most part, these are animal figurines made of ceramics, plastic, amber and other materials - there are 22 types in total. In addition, here you can find many decorative gizmos in the same spirit - caskets, magnets, watches, etc. Most of collection was donated by visitors. Now there are things from 35 countries of the world.

And, of course, a must-see is Art Gallery them. R. Savickas, which hosts exhibitions of works by contemporary artists.

What to see in Palanga and surroundings

The botanical garden, located in Palanga, is considered one of the most beautiful in the Baltic countries. The Baltic coast, pine forest on one side and sand dunes on the other, give it an incredible charm.

It was founded in 1897 by the Frenchman Andre, who was a good landscape architect and part-time botanist. The creation of this park took him 3 years.

In the center is the no less impressive palace of the Tyszkiewicz, who were engaged in arranging the garden. The territory of the Botanical Garden occupies 100 hectares, where more than half are trees, mostly pines.

There are also many reservoirs here, especially among them a pond with swans stands out. In the evenings, pedestrian zones and glades are illuminated with special illumination, which gives the whole composition a fabulous look. In the summer evenings, festivals and events related to brass music are held here.

Here is also Mount Birute - a pagan priestess. This place is very ancient and sacred. It is believed that this place was previously a castle, destroyed by the Crusaders. And in this very place was the place of sacrifice of the priestess Birute, known in these parts.

Now on top of the hill there is a chapel decorated with stained glass windows, as well as several sculptures.

Here, on a large organized playground, a whole Children's Town is equipped with many swings, slides and other similar entertainments.

Not so far from Palanga is the famous attraction throughout Lithuania - Trakai Castle, because in this area it is the oldest and largest fortress. The exact date of its construction is unknown, but there is reason to believe that it stood here already in the 14th century.

The undoubted achievement of the builders is the impregnability of the castle, which no one has conquered. But already in the 16th century, the significance of the fortress gradually faded away, and it became a place of exile and a prison. This leads to the gradual destruction of the structure. Its restoration lasted for a long time, starting from 1901 and ending in the 90s, when the building was restored to its former appearance.

Take into account: on the coast of the Baltic Sea, at some distance from the city, you can visit the Seaside Regional Park. Its purpose is to preserve local flora and fauna, as well as the protection of species listed in the Red Book.

Some of these structures are located closer to the pier in Palanga.

The first pier on this shore was built about 100 years ago by Count Tyszkiewicz, but the wooden structure could no longer serve the city. The new one, in the shape of the letter L, was built in the 90s. Now it is a favorite place for city dwellers and tourists to enjoy the sunsets.

The pier is very easy to find, just walk along the main street of the city of Palanga - Basanavičiaus, whose photos adorn more than one guidebook.

The length of the pedestrian road, lined with paving stones, is 1 kilometer. It starts from Vytautas Street and ends right on the Baltic coast. In addition to walking along it, it is quite possible to enjoy many historical monuments architecture in close proximity.

For example, on Vytautas Street there is an old pharmacy known here, which has been operating here for more than 150 years. It was the first institution of its kind in Lithuania in the 19th century. Unlike today, before all the medicines were prepared right here.

Surprisingly, some of them are still sold, for example, an elixir of 27 plants called "999". True, the work of the pharmacy was still interrupted in 1940-1990, when the building was occupied by the NKVD department. Then it was restored in the spirit of the 19th century and the pharmacy was reopened. The building itself is also of architectural interest.
