Marble mountains. Photo report of independent tourists

famous marble mountains are located near the Vietnamese city of Da Nang, close to South China Sea. This natural monument includes five stone hills formed of marble, which in ancient times were islands.

Marble mountains in Da Nang

At the beginning of the 19th century, the five Marble Mountains were named after the five natural elements by the decree of King Gia Long. Since then, these mountains have been called Mokshon (Wood), Thui Son (Water), Kim Son (Metal), Hoashon (Fire) and Tho Son (Earth). The highest of all mountains today is Water Mountain, on which several pagodas are built. The most famous, Tam Thai Pagoda, was built here in 1825. To the left of the temple is an observation deck, from which visitors can see great view to the rest of the Marble Mountains and the surroundings of Da Nang. Traveling through the Marble Mountains is fraught with many discoveries - on the side paths, tourists appear amazing caves, which served as sanctuaries for Vietnamese Buddhists and Hindu Chams. Later, these caves were adapted as a hospital for the wounded Viet Cong. You can explore the caves both with the help of a guide and by paying about 20,000 - 40,000 Vietnamese dong ($ 1 - $ 2) to local boys. At the foot of the Marble Mountains, there is a village of marble makers, where visitors can buy original souvenirs made by skilled artisans.

This cave is the scariest dedicated to the theme of hell and heaven. The mysterious entrance to it is a staircase, on both sides of which there are figurines with animal heads. A gaping black passage opens the entrance to "purgatory". In the cave, which symbolizes hell, there is a sacrificial altar in the center and there are statues with scenes of sacrifices and torments of sinners in hell.

After it, the tourist hurries to rise on observation deck symbolizing paradise, the way goes on the slippery steps past the altar with a statue of Buddha, going upstairs you can find the temple.

After climbing Mount Thuy Son, you need to climb a few more steps and the altar opens, and behind it the ominous passage to the Van Thong cave. Rocks made of marble of bizarre coloring, and inside they are huge, sometimes just giant caves with altars and temples. This place is a must see when traveling in Vietnam! Today I will talk about how we ended up in heaven and hell one morning in Vietnam, and almost bought a giant marble statue.

We arrived in Danang by train (you probably already know that we are). We spent a rather comfortable night in a four-seater compartment and practically did not feel these 11 hours on the road. Danang is a big city, I would even call it a mediocre metropolis. Wide avenues, new high-rise buildings, many brand new hotels licked to a shine and, of course, a long strip of beaches. fashionable resort town, in a word. One of the attractions suspension bridge which is very beautiful in the evening.

There is an opinion that Da Nang is creepy expensive hotels, so travelers prefer to settle in the nearby historic town of Hoi An. I can say that this is all nonsense. Da Nang is full of budget accommodation. See what kind of hotel I found in just 10 minutes of searching in Agoda. A fairly large room costs only $12 per night.

I built a special hotel widget so that you don’t have to look for it for a long time. You can see the prices right here and book for the desired dates.

The next morning we rented a bike and drove to the Marble Mountains. You can go there by two roads - along the main highway to Hoi An or along the highway, which is closer to the sea. We chose the second option and did not lose. Drive only 8 kilometers. On the outskirts of the rocks there are expensive open-air showcase shops.

There are several shops, each the size of a small park. Admission is free, you can just stare at the statues or even ride some of them.

Marble comes in different colors. I really liked these Vietnamese ladies.

I asked a business-like woman passing by how much a white statue of a girl about 160 cm high costs. She answered me: "7 thousand dollars, and it's very cheap!". I asked just for the sake of interest, and my aunt's eyes sparkled - she saw a potential client in me and let's praise your product. Of course, if I had this money, maybe I could not resist and would have bought some beauty. And just appreciated that walking in a multi-million dollar park. It is not for nothing that each sculpture here is carefully washed and polished. The money is just huge!

Well, here are the marble mountains, they are immediately to the right around the corner from the shopping parks. Nearby there are five tall rocks, but there are caves equipped for tourists only in two. We went to the most popular one.

The entrance to the caves costs 15,000 dong ($0.75), a very affordable price, however, this is a feature of almost all cities in Vietnam. You can’t put a bike in front of the entrance, there is no official parking either. Store owners offer to leave a piece of iron near their stalls. Sanya asked for a long time what they would require in return. The answer was: "If you decide to buy something, buy only from me." Having warned my aunt that we were not going to buy anything, we left the bike with her. Like agreed, but we'll see. We went up a very steep staircase for a long time to the top.

I’ll show you a map of the marble caves in Da Nang right away so that you understand that you can’t get by with an hour-long excursion. At least 3-4 hours to quickly run around the main places.

First of all, we went up to the observation deck. The views here are fabulous.

You can see through binoculars. An aunt is standing nearby, who is trying to ask for money for using optics. But the ticket attendant could not give us a receipt in exchange for money, so she did not receive payment from us. At all I already wrote about such sellers of "tickets to failure" and other swindlers in Vietnam. Study carefully. Very useful when traveling through this amazing country.

And in anticipation of something grandiose, we went to the first cave, which is number 10 on the map. Here is such a mysterious entrance there, just like in a fairy tale about a scarlet flower - a cave in which a monster lives.

And this is how the entrance to the cave looks from the other end of the hall. The floor is tiled, the walls are illuminated. Everything suggests that this place was ennobled specifically for tourists. What a comparison with the wild and almost untouched.

Inside is a small temple in honor of the Buddha.

In general, small prayer houses and, conversely, large temples on this rock are at every step. Marble caves in Da Nang are not just social entertainment, but a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists and people practicing Hinduism and ancestral cults.

But some come here for a completely different reason - because of the opportunity to learn rock climbing. No courses are offered on the spot, so you need to look for a climbing instructor in Da Nang in advance.

I will not show you tiny caves with hard-to-reach passages. It was dark enough there, and I couldn't good photos. Here's one for an example.

I'd rather show a cave that we might not have seen if I hadn't read a couple of blog reports on the eve of the trip. I liked the photo with the sacrificial altar. Then you will understand what I am talking about, it is indeed a very colorful sight. I was looking for this altar for the whole 2.5 hours while we wandered from cave to cave. He was absent. And already descending from the cliff, I realized that we had not found a cave called Am Phu. It turned out that the entrance to it is at the bottom of the mountain right under the elevator. The entrance ticket must be bought separately, it also costs 15,000 dong ($0.75).

Below in the photo is the entrance to the Am Phu cave. Behind him, a judgment seat awaits you and a journey to heaven and hell.

And next to you is a musician who will either cry about your soul or rejoice.

Here, from the entrance, you are met by monks immured in the wall.

In some miraculous way, the religious is replaced by the socialist. True, not for long, only on one fresco.

He is closer.

Speaking of hell. If you do not have a very clear idea of what is happening there, then in the Am Phu cave you will be clearly shown everything. The following photos are not for the faint of heart.

The cave "hell" is a rather unpleasant place with narrow passages and many stairs - up and down. We hurried to get out of there, without having explored all its nooks and crannies to the end. Can't wait to visit paradise. After all, he should be here for those who behaved well and did not offend anyone. Found. It starts on this staircase leading to a tiny observation deck.

So, what is the price independent trip V marble caves:

Bike rental - 100 thousand dong ($5),

Refueling the bike - 20 thousand dong ($1)

Entrance tickets to both cave complexes - 30 thousand dong per person ($ 1.5),

Total nine dollars for two. Inexpensive entertainment, Truth?

What to wear, what to bring with you:

Leave your beach flip-flops at the hotel, and put on stronger shoes yourself - sports sandals or sneakers. You will need to walk a lot, often climb uphill, shoes should be comfortable. You need to take a lot of water with you.

When buying marble figurines, be vigilant! When they offer something very cheap, then most likely it is not marble, but an imitation - cheap plastic. Read online and remember how to recognize marble if you are going to make a serious purchase.

To avoid the difficult climb uphill, you can use the elevator. It costs 15 thousand VND ($0.75). Where the elevator is located is clearly visible on the map at the beginning of the post.

It is better to come to the marble caves early in the morning to avoid the hustle and bustle of package tourists.

  4. If you settle in the southern part of Da Nang, you can even walk to the mountains.

The bike can be parked in the parking lot next to the lift. Approaching the sights, many merchants will obsessively offer you to park the bike behind them. separate fee. We fell for it, but then we saw the official parking lot. Nearby there is also parking for cars.

Plan scheme of marble mountains

Each part of the mountains is divided into elements.

Full division:

  • Hoa Son (Hoa Son) - the element of fire;
  • Kim Son (Kim Son) - the element of metal;
  • Tho Son (Tho Son) - the element of the earth;
  • Thuy Son (They Son) - the element of water;
  • Moc Son (Mok Son) - the element of wood and nature, named after the pagan goddess of fertility Mokosh.

And now it's worth getting acquainted with all the hills separately!

Main Water Mountain (Thuy Son)

The largest and most interesting among other mountains. It is she who should be given preference.

Climbing the mountain is carried out from 2 sides: western ( main entrance, 154 steps) and east (additional entrance, 104 steps), the easiest option is to climb using an elevator.

Western entrance - 154 steps.

We started our walk with western entrance. We bought tickets and went to conquer the peaks.

Western entrance

Western entrance

But in the heat of +35 degrees it turned out to be quite difficult to climb. Without thinking twice, we decided not to torment ourselves and the children. Therefore, we went down and went to the elevator, which is located near the eastern entrance.

We saw the official parking next to the elevator. It’s a pity that we had previously parked our bike near one of the shops at the entrance for a fee.

East entrance

Parking near the lift

Elevator from the east entrance

We paid 15,000 dong for the elevator each and quickly drove part of the way.

Ticket office

Above is a platform for viewing the territory.

Don't think that once you ride the elevator, you won't have to walk much. After the elevator, we wound quite a few kilometers).

This colorful pagoda with various Buddha statues is perfect place to start your journey as it is located next to the elevator.

Next to Linh Ung is high tower called Xa Loi. Its height is 15 meters. Be sure to look at the beautiful views from this place.

Neighborhood

Beautiful views to the South China Sea

Moving on, we reached the Linh Nham cave. This is a small grotto with a statue of a standing Buddha. The location is nothing special, but the Marble Mountains are just about relaxing in nature and enjoying the trail on your way to every attraction.

Van Tong Cave is not like the others. There are no statues and temples here, but there is an interesting path among the rocks. You will need strength and desire to crawl up the steep and narrow passage. We slowly walked to the exit, and did not even know what was waiting for us on the other side. It turned out that they went to the observation deck.

Here you can climb the rocks with climbing equipment. It is paid additionally.

The kids liked it here the most. They showed their strength and dexterity.

On the other side of the cave was waiting for us observation platform. In one direction you can admire the view of the Marble Mountains, and in the other direction the sea. It was unexpected to see cacti at the very top.

Warning: There are slippery rocks on the way even when they are dry.

Steep descents from a vantage point

It was founded at the beginning of the 17th century. Together with the largest tower "Xa Loi" is calling card this place.

There is a toilet at Tam Thai Pagoda. We had to work hard to find it.

Then we walked to Tam Ton Pagoda. This place is notable for the presence of a large bell.

The real attraction here is not the pagoda itself, but the view of the surrounding mountains and the sea. This is one of the most scenic spots located on the mountain.

The largest HUYEN KHONG cave

Most impressive is this huge cave, which was founded in the 17th century.

Here you will see Buddhist temple, a buddha carved from rocks in 1960.

Another feature of Huen Khong is the natural opening at the top of the mountain. If you correctly calculate the time of the visit, you can see the rays sunlight falling from above onto the floor of the cave. One of the holes is the result of a bomb!

Near big cave the more modest HOA NGHIEM is located, which features a stunning rock carving of the Guan Yin Buddha.

Steam attracts attention in the cave marble statues who sit on the ground and play checkers with each other. According to legend, the fairies enthusiastically played checkers and, in order to hide their true form, took the form of wise old men.

Walking inside, you feel uncomfortable. It's dark and there are bats flying around. Many tourists often just look here, but do not get to all corners.

Take a flashlight with you, it's very dark in places.

Below, from the side of the parking lot, there is an entrance to another Am Phu cave. It turned out that this place has a separate entrance system. The ticket costs - 20,000 VND, but it's worth it.

Am Phu, the most outlandish part of the Marble Mountains. It stands for "Cave of Hell". The lower part represents the depths underworld Ada. Gradually rising higher and higher, you find yourself in heavenly kingdom Raya. The spectacle is breathtaking.

Outlets

At the foot of the mountain there are many shops with souvenirs and drinks. Prices are the same as in any tourist place overpriced. You need to bargain before buying.

Video and reviews from our trip

Review

Despite the fatigue, we were satisfied with visiting the Marble Mountains. It was as if we had gone through a big quest, the purpose of which was to find all the caves, pagodas and viewpoints. It will not be interesting to walk here again. And for a one-time visit just right.

The main thing is to wear comfortable shoes, stock up on water and a good mood! We confidently recommend the place to visit even with children (from 9-10 years old). Kids will get tired very quickly and will overcome distances in the hands of their parents.
