Should an Orthodox Christian dress in some special way on the beach? Can he or she wear regular bathing suits? Is it necessary to develop, like Muslims, the direction of Orthodox beachwear, bathing dresses, closed clothing? Isn't wearing a swimsuit on the beach a temptation for other people? So many questions and no answers. So I propose to reflect on the topic of the Orthodox beach fashion. Someone will be surprised to see the stated topic, someone will wince, someone will laugh. Why not? If there are questions, there must be answers. If there is a problem, then there must be a solution.

Honestly, when I was asked to tell something on this topic, at first this idea seemed to me very ungrateful. It is worth saying that ordinary bathing suits are quite acceptable for the Orthodox, then you can expect a hail of stones in your garden from "special zealots of piety." And if I say that the Orthodox should bathe in long clothes that completely hide the body, then they will be accused of copying Muslim beachwear or being too picky, which, most likely, will lead to a total offense against me for many girls and women, including Orthodox. But nothing can be done, you have to look for the "golden mean".

Strictly speaking, neither canons nor rules Orthodox Church they do not regulate the issue of beachwear in any way. The Church simply never thought about this issue.

Although regarding the skirt, the issue is quite controversial. Many opponents of trousers refer to the canons forbidding a woman to wear men's clothing. But the trousers that modern women wear have nothing to do with men's wardrobe.

Try dressing the man in women's trousers or jeans. And laughter and sin will turn out. But I still consider myself an opponent of trousers in the temple.

I have my own arguments for this. Every place has a certain type of clothing. They go to secular receptions in suits and evening dresses, to the stadium in a sports suit, it is more convenient to climb mountains in special clothes, and the military only go to the service in uniform. Also, a certain kind of clothing, which has been described above, befits the temple. And there is no point in favor of someone's desire to deviate from the ancient pious traditions.

But lest they think that I am talking only about women's clothing, then I’ll say that men can’t be naked in the temple either. No tank tops, shorts, breeches.

The main rule is that clothes for visiting the temple should be modest, because. we go to the temple for a humble meeting of our soul with God, and not for a demonstration of outfits.

The conversation about clothes that befits a certain place should be continued with regard to beachwear. It is well known that beachwear is a swimsuit for a woman and swimming trunks for a man. Not a bathrobe, not a dress, not trousers, but a swimsuit or swimming trunks. This is the generally accepted norm. If someone thinks that wearing a swimsuit on the beach is indecent, then let him not go to the beach. We all live in society and must abide by the rules established in society, unless they contradict our Orthodox worldview and do not hurt our religious feelings.

Muslim beachwear for women can be cited as an example. It is a hooded hoodie made of opaque material. All according to the rules of Islam. Therefore, you should not defile along the beach in some kind of revealing swimsuit, which will look more like strings with attached handkerchiefs designed to cover bashful parts of the body. Needless to say, they do not cover much, and passions still run high.

By the way, here we come to passions. They rage in modern world in earnest, and modern fashion for the most part is aimed precisely at further inciting them.

At the beginning of my answer, the problem was voiced - is it not tempting for other people to wear a swimsuit on the beach? It's time to remember the words of the Savior: “Woe to the world because of temptations, for temptations must come; but woe to that person through whom the stumbling block comes” (Matthew 18:7). Will an Orthodox woman in a bathing suit be a temptation for a man? I will say this: even a tightly closed Orthodox woman can become a temptation for a man. Even looking at a beautiful woman's face can be a temptation. And for the male imagination, inflamed from sin, fornication, it is enough just to look at the female silhouette in order to mentally sin. And what now - do not walk the streets, knowing that there may be some womanizer or a pervert nearby?

Returning to the topic of a swimsuit, it is worth noting that a woman or a girl in a closed swimsuit will not attract the attention of men and will not be any particular temptation compared, for example, with a girl in a revealing swimsuit defiling along the beach in search of a potential boyfriend.

And in the end, even if for some man a girl in a closed swimsuit serves as a temptation and he decides to approach her in order to get acquainted with the subject of “continuing the relationship”, then you can always simply refuse to get acquainted. And knowing how some of our parishioners can sting with a caustic word or look, one can only imagine what a failed boyfriend will feel at the moment of refusal. I think he will develop a persistent allergy to Orthodox Christian women in closed swimsuits.
