  1. The city of Rovinj Croatia, whose sights refer us partly to the Balkan and partly to the Italian culture, is a beautiful cozy town with plenty of recreational opportunities. On the Istrian peninsula, Rovinj is called the most romantic city. I agree with this. Unusually cozy, as if toy and not crowded during the day, the city is filled with people in the late afternoon.

    Rovinj - stay reviews:

Let's first tell you a little about the features of a beach holiday in Rovinj. Some tourists, having studied the reviews, consider Rovinj as a vacation in an apartment. There are some countless numbers of them for rent both via the Internet, and simply, you go by car, all around there are signs on the houses “Apartments”. Of course, there are hotels offering beach holidays. And there aren't that many (I mean - good hotels). But here private beach at a hotel in Croatia - a rare thing. The system is as follows: tourists come, settle either in a hotel or in apartments, and go to public beaches to sunbathe and swim. The Adriatic Sea, the cleanest, this is understandable, because almost all the beaches are rocky (from small pebbles to large stones). Color sea water- saturated blue-turquoise, the water both near the coast and at a depth is transparent. On some beaches you can rent an umbrella and a sunbed. The prices for this "pleasure" are very different: from 200 to 800 rubles per person, depending on the place, and this service is not available everywhere. So people are lying on what: on bedding, mats, towels ... Entrance to the sea - either on pebbles (if the stones are large, it is better to buy special shoes for entering the sea), or on steps from a concrete platform, which is often part of the beach . On this platform people lie, sunbathe.

But such a beach we had yet to come. And in Rovinj we stayed at the hotel Eden Rovinj.
It, like the two neighboring hotels, had its own, well-equipped beach with showers, sun loungers and umbrellas, adjustable at an angle. The sea is quiet here, the hotel is located in a cozy bay. The territory of the hotel - all in the pine trees, under the pine sunbeds, you can hide in the heat in the shade of the trees. Adjacent to the hotel national park(Golden Horn, it seems). The park itself has several outlets to the sea, something like wild beaches, we also swam there. There are paths throughout the park, people walk, ride bicycles (the hotel has a large bicycle rental point), go in for Nordic walking.
    Hotel Eden Rovinj

In general, cycling tourism is very developed in Croatia. Bicycle rentals are everywhere, and whole groups of cyclists of different ages ride along the roads, paths and trails. Just in the park near the hotel, Eden Rovinj observed a curious picture: an adult man rides a bicycle with a trailer, and in the trailer - two very small children are sitting, fastened with seat belts, everything is as it should be. Rooms, breakfasts, territory in the hotel Eden Rovinj - I liked everything. The only significant minus is the terrible stuffiness in the corridors on the floors, if the room is not next to the elevator, then it is not very comfortable to go to it in the heat, the Eden Rovinj hotel, by the way, is 4 stars.

Rovinj - Croatia, attractions, what to see?

We spent several days here - in the morning we sunbathed and swam, and in the late afternoon we went to see the sights of Rovinj (Croatia) and have dinner, it took about 20 minutes to walk along the embankment from the Eden Rovinj hotel to the city center. The town itself is located on an archipelago consisting of a couple of dozen islands. The architectural image of Rovinj is houses that go with walls right into the sea (just like in). In 1963 Rovinj was recognized as a cultural monument. Despite the fact that the city was burned and destroyed several times in the course of its history, many architectural monuments conveying the spirit of their times. In the center of the Old Town of Rovinj rises the Cathedral of St. Euphemia (the patroness of the city) with a Venetian-style facade and an observation deck, many small narrow cobbled streets scatter from it, and sometimes go up steeply.

People live here, and the lower floors are all occupied by shops with all sorts of things, cafes, restaurants local cuisine(in Croatia such establishments are called Konoby). Almost all the restaurants on these streets have stairs right into the water. You sit like this, enjoying the taste of wine and the smell of the sea. We managed to meet a noisy Italian wedding at the Cathedral.

  2. The roofs of houses in Rovinj Croatia (almost all and everywhere) are covered with red tiles. This, of course, creates a certain color and forms a “picture”: blue sea, yellow sun, rocky or wooded mountains and houses with red roofs. Croatia, of course, is very beautiful and clean country. In the evening, when the heat subsides, people come to Rovinj, vacationers from all nearby places come for a walk. On central square every day some kind of performance, live music plays. One of the evenings was themed: vintage cars lined up along the embankment, many guests were dressed a la dudes, and some band was playing on the square. The musicians addressed the audience in two languages: Croatian and Italian. This is due not only to the fact that there were many Italians among the guests on the square, but because Rovinj is one of several cities on the Croatian peninsula of Istria, where the state language, along with Croatian, is also Italian.

Oh, who's the one who got stuck?

Here we need to look into history. The city of Rovinj has experienced several historical eras. At various times it was ruled by the Byzantines, Germans, Austro-Hungarians, long time it was part of the Venetian Republic. And in the twentieth century, until the surrender of Italy in 1943, it belonged to Italy (!), After the war, it became part of.

I will say this - Rovinj is very italian city Croatia, the locals speak fluently both Croatian and Italian. Yes, and the geographical proximity to Italy affects. From Rovinj (and in general, from Istria), for example, it is very convenient and fast enough to get by road to the north of Italy. And tourist boats go to the Italian from Rovinj every day. Boat rental in Croatia, in port cities- for every taste and budget.

  3. There are no problems with where to have a delicious dinner. We searched for restaurants based on reviews on the Internet, scored a request - " Rovinj Croatia Reviews Restaurants"and on the recommendation of the hotel. It is better to book a table for the evening in a popular restaurant. The food is delicious everywhere.

Prices for Croatia are average, there are many Italian dishes on the menu (however, this is everywhere in Croatia). In general, it is believed that Croats eat a lot of fish and seafood. They eat, of course, and offer tourists. But, in general, they are meat-eaters. In any restaurant you will be offered a large meat plate with pieces of different meats, sausages and sausages.

And the Croats have an interesting proverb - "no better fish than a piglet." Traveling around Croatia, we often met dishes like “pig or lamb on a spit. Restaurants offer many different sausages, which are first smoked and then grilled. In Croatia, very tasty real hard aged cheeses. Restaurants serve wine with whole plates of different varieties of local cheese (cow, goat, sheep). Delicious baked goods everywhere. If you buy coffee with a croissant at a gas station, they will definitely warm it up for you, and it will be no less tasty than in some expensive restaurant. Globalism and proximity to Austria have an effect - there is almost always a strudel with apple or cheese on the menu. But we will try the strudel in. Among the famous Istra dishes are Risotto with cuttlefish ink and Istra prosciutto. Prshut is just pork, or rather, pork ham.

In Croatia, two varieties of prshut are made: Dalmatian - smoked and Istra - dried, similar to Spanish jamon. I can’t say it myself, but it is believed that Croatian prosciutto is tastier than Italian prosciutto.

Some information - what to drink in Croatia. Of course, wine. Wine is a cult here. During the day, when it is hot, it is diluted with water and drunk just to quench your thirst. The wines are red and white, mostly dry. Varieties and types of wine - a lot depending on the area (soil, wind, climate, grape variety). Curious information - wines in Croatia are many and different, but ... only for internal use (for residents and tourists). There is almost no wine for export, Croatian wine is very difficult to find in other countries. We can say that a bottle of wine brought from Croatia would be a great gift.

In restaurants in Rovinj, they always bring either a welcome or “on the road” shot of brandy. Rakia is grape (like grappa in Italy), plum (slivovitz) or herbal (travaritsa).

And what sunsets in Croatia, and in particular - in Rovinj!!! This is a must see!
    Sunsets in Rovinj

In Rovinj, we had a wonderful day and evening, but it was time to leave this fabulous city and our cozy hotel. We are heading to, and on the way we stop by (here on the Istrian peninsula) to see a monument of ancient Roman culture - an amphitheater. Built back in the 1st century AD. for gladiator fights, this arena ranks sixth in the world in terms of size. Entrance inside is paid - about 4 €, but that's another story...

  4. Moreover, I want to note that the radio in the car was constantly working with interference, I think because of the mountains, and when the American TomTom navigator drove into the city of Rovinj, he lost the gps signal, where to go would be incomprehensible, if not for the Russian Navitel, lo and behold, he saved me this time.

And we would only scold domestic
Cool trip, nature, mountains, the sea always "cling". And the beaches are very attractive, thanks for the story.

But all this is purely touristic. And how do people live? Does he remember us with a kind word? Doesn't remember at all? Or is it better not to say that you are Russian?

  5. , Russians in Croatia are treated calmly. I can not say that with some love, but there is no hatred either.
In the following story, I will tell how in Plitvice, we lived with Russian-speaking Serbs who have lived in Croatia all their lives and they told us a lot about the war in Yugoslavia and about life in general, but how we watched Croatian news and learned a lot of interesting things from them, even I myself could never have thought that Russia had such plans! There were also very friendly people, especially in Zagreb, Dubrovnik, who were happy to help, and there were also waiters in a restaurant who tried to "dissolve", in short, like in our country.

It seemed to me that the people live normally, but there are poor people, there are wealthy people, cars are usually good, well, if not expensive, then most of them are new.

A salary of around 8000 HRK is considered normal, a high salary is about 1500 € (11250 HRK), but about 300 € goes to taxes, so 1000€ /1200€ on hand is good. Of course, there are people who earn much more, and there are less. In short, the country does not look poor. Some of the highest paid professions are doctors and IT specialists. Low wages in the tourism sector, many people live on renting out housing, rent out the season, then live on this money. But do not forget that they also pay taxes, they are very strict with this, I don’t know if the information is correct or not, but as I was told, 12% goes to taxes on rental housing.

Yes, medicine is subsidized by the state and is well developed, many people go for treatment from the EU countries, especially cardiology and orthopedics, everything is quite affordable, a doctor’s appointment costs about 190 kunas, and a dentist’s tooth heal is about 50€ to 70€. But this is approximate information told to us local resident I haven't tested it myself, of course.

I promised to tell you about the most amazing city Istria in Croatia (according to my version, of course) - about the city of Rovinj. It was here that I planned to spend as many as 3 whole days, after an exciting trip through the wonderful country of Slovenia. We enter Rovinj closer to dinner, as we spent the whole morning in a nearby place. Even when I was tormented by the question - which of these cities to choose as a base for recreation, I read somewhere that Porech is good, but Rovn is very sincere and great. Holy truth. Rovinj is amazing. I'm glad I chose him.

Here he is ancient city Rovinj
We enter the city in a strange-left way through new buildings. I must say that Rovinj itself is divided into several districts, most of which have modern origin and new buildings. Since we travel by car, and the distances in Rovinj are childish, I choose apartments in the Centener area for accommodation. We find them almost on the first try on the navigator. How much almost? Because I had a chance to clarify the address with the neighbors, having passed by our villa only some 20 meters.

In Centener, every house is an apartment. good area for relax. I'll tell you a little about our hostess. Her name is Ann. She is Croatian, she is 70 years old, no less. Her house is on the first floor. Apartments - the second. Anna's daughter lives in Germany. Got there In Germany, a girl still a refugee, sting in the camp, studied at school, then at the university, found a job. Now he comes with his friends to visit Anna. Of course, Anna speaks excellent German and no boom-boom in English. But what about us? There is German in our assortment!

Rovinj is very romantic. Especially at dawn and dusk
First, traditionally, a little about the city - its history, population, etc. There is an assumption that the first settlements on this site appeared in the Bronze Age, which is somehow not very interesting to me :). The city itself, traditionally, was founded by the ancient Romans in the 3rd century and already in the 7th century it was mentioned in the annals under the name Ruvignio.

It's getting dark.
It's funny that Rovinj is considered the "brother of Venice", and on the island closest to it, on the island of St. Andrew, the remains of ancient glass production were discovered. Well, that's right, brother. After all, at first Rovinj, like Venice, was located on an island! More precisely, on one of the 22 islands of the local archipelago, separated from the mainland by a strait of just a few tens of meters. The city grew rich, grew, it became crowded within the fortress walls with seven gates (of which three have survived to this day, and I found only two gates :)): the gates of St. Benedict, the Holy Cross and the Port Gate. So. In XVII the strait was filled up. The city ceased to be an island, and three squares appeared on the site of the strait: the square named after. Marshal Tito (Trg Maršala Tito) with the Balbi arch, built in the 17th century, the square on the Bridge (Trg na Mostu) and Trg Valdibora.

Port I is one of the city's sources of income
Reigned in Rovinj different states. There was a city both as part of Franconia, and in the control of Byzantium, then the Germans. And in the 13th century, the famous powerful Venetian Republic came here and lingered right up to the 18th century. And even in these 5 centuries, life was not "boring" - and the Genoese captured the city, and local population staged uprisings against the dominion of the Venetto. Yes, the Venetians did a lot for this place: developed Trading port, agriculture and - fine architecture "selling" Rovinj today to tourists.
Further, the history is standard for Istria: Austria-Hungary, France, Italy, Yugoslavia.

Port.Bay. boats
Of course, the port and the sea in Rovinj, as in others seaside cities, - this is all. From time immemorial, residents have made money on the sea: trade, fishing, smuggling and even piracy. Rovinj became an important local port even under the Romans (I already talked about this), local sailors became famous for their skills and courage, including in battles. With the Turks, for example.

Our area is far from the center. From it to the peninsula with the old part, a walking distance of about 30 minutes. You can go along the road, you can along the sea. No matter how I was going to go at least once along the road - it did not work out! Painfully beautiful views from the sea. And, in secret, the main factor in moving "by sea" was football. As the games progressed, we went from one screen cafe to another screen cafe. Looking ahead, and ate dinner only where there is a TV :).

A very good "trick" in Rovinj is the designation with special icons of places from where beautiful views are obtained. I think the photo below was taken from one of those places. Only it is better to come here at dawn - the lighting will be correct.

So. City Hall. From here our routes along the streets of the city begin. We are so comfortable. I can't understand how the clown who works here earns. But he ... distributes balloons to children. Moreover, he makes everything from these balls - animals, flowers, sabers. It is simply impossible to tear children away from him simply in principle.

In total, about 14 thousand people now live in the city. Composition, international, from Italians to Bosnians (I believe, I believe). official languages two: Croatian and Italian. Even the name of the city is written in two languages: Rovinj-Rovigno. Unofficial, but commonly used everywhere - German. It feels like I'm in Germany)) By the way, there's also
live speakers of the endangered Istro-Romance language, which was previously spoken in almost the entire south-west of Istria. Here is such a multilingual Rovinj.

One of the gates of the city preserved from ancient times

Geranium is our everything!
They say that all the streets in the city lead to the Cathedral of St. Euphemia. I have my doubts that this is so. Still, my favorite route was "circular", around the peninsula first, and then along the streets inside. It's good to wander among the medieval buildings!

Croatians approach architecture (and architectural monuments) pragmatically. Every home should (if it can) generate income. Of course, there are plenty of art objects and art shops here. I do not remember high art, but a good quality product is presented.

One of their stores
Do you think this photo is here by chance? Or was I just photographing a lazy dog? No. This is a photo about love and fidelity. About the love of the hostess to her dog. The dog is very old. it is very, very difficult for her to walk! Therefore, the hostess takes her for walks in this stroller along the steep streets of the city. That's it, no words. Every day. Such is love.

Under the remains of the walls in Rovinj there is a cool place with beautiful view on the sea. There is a lighthouse here, which is natural and logical, and pillboxes, which is unnatural, but also logical. And there are also benches where you can sit and stare at the sea for hours and picturesque lanterns for photo shoots.

DOT

Lighthouse
From this place you can climb to the Cathedral of St. Euphemia or go down the streets to another part of the peninsula. Of course, we go to the cathedral! However, it is the main attraction of the city.

The Baroque cathedral was either built or reconstructed, I didn’t understand for sure, having collected information from various sources, in the 18th century, i.e. not so long ago, before him, the church of St. George was located on this site from the 10th century, a statue from which, by the way, has been preserved, and still adorns the main altar of the new cathedral. In the center of the cathedral there is a sarcophagus with the relics of St. Euphemia. According to legend, Euphemia (or another transliteration - Euphemia) in the 4th century, as a punishment for confessing the Christian faith, was thrown to be torn to pieces in an enclosure for lions, but the animals did not touch her. Which, unfortunately, did not save the girl from death - Euphemia was executed in a different way. On the spire, by the way, it is located, only in the form of a statue.
The bell tower of the cathedral is the highest in Istria, 62 meters. Every year on September 16, pilgrims come to Rovinj to honor the memory of St. Euphemia. That's all my meager knowledge in this matter.

What is good about this place near the cathedral? Of course, again views! After all, the building was built on the very top of a hill located on the peninsula. And yet, it seems, you can climb the bell tower. Since climbing bell towers is not my favorite pastime, I did not check the accuracy of information about such an opportunity.

The city is very picturesque. It is as artistically careless as all the cities of ancient Italian buildings. Many buildings, which are already 300-400 years old, were bought by modern wealthy foreigners, who carefully restored them (and how else - for the preservation historical appearance city is monitored by the municipality, and to cultural heritage Europeans treat with care) and now they use them as comfortable "dachas" for summer holidays.

From the cathedral you can go "into" the city along very steep and slippery, stone streets polished for centuries, or you can return to the sea and complete the detour around the perimeter. Both routes are interesting. But today we are going along the sea.

The most attractive thing in the route "along the sea" is such narrow streets - exits to it. On the edge there are houses, leaving their foundations directly into the water. And these ladders lead to the side entrances to these houses and shops. I went down - a bit high to the sea. And yet, I climbed into the entrances. Very steep steps and a healthy view from the windows. In the evening, such streets come alive, illuminated by candles, shopkeepers and ubiquitous tourists appear, craving emotions, souvenirs and delicious food.

On the other side of the peninsula, in my opinion, the most romantic view of the city opens. Especially during sunset. Rovinj becomes ... golden-copper from the rays of the setting sun, and the windows in the houses are on fire.

Rovinj. Sunset

You give a lot of photo shoots! beautiful and different
On this side there is a market, Trg Valdibora square and a monument to the victims of fascism. And here are the most impudent seagulls and the friendliest cats)))

Well, on the very embankment in the port there is such a monster with a glass bottom, illuminating the fish in their evening leisure))

In Croatia, beer is worse than wine. It's my opinion. By the way, in Rovinj there are a lot of establishments with Italian cuisine, which is natural. Very good tasty pizzas. Very good steaks. But my undisputed leader is all kinds of forms of cooking squid - grilled, in batter. Fish and mussels, I would say, are standard. But squids - you will lick your fingers! And even better with wine.

Continuing the theme of gastronomy. The most popular dishes in restaurants are various types of pasta and seafood risotto. Here, honestly, I don’t like pasta at all (I eat out of hopelessness) If there is a pity to try local Croatian dishes, what is worth taking if you find:
Burek (layer cake: it happens with both meat and cheese), cevapcici, risotto with truffles (truffles are better in Slovenia!), razhniki - such local kebabs, planchinki - such pancakes. Well, seafood, of course.

If you go down from the Cathedral of St. Euphemia immediately deep into the city, you will find yourself in a network of intricate picturesque streets with all kinds of courtyards, shops, restaurants, plants, cats - in the whole mix of moods and sensations that create southern resort towns.

And one more of their decorations of the city are pipes and underwear). Previously, due to the high cost of building a new house, several different generations lived in the old one, but heating was a personal matter for everyone, so the houses had many different stoves and chimneys, respectively. And linen. What's underwear? How without underwear on the streets of Italian cities and those villages that have long lived under the Italians? Traditions are passed on.

Rovinj pipes
For locals, trade is one of the sources of income. But is it worth wasting time only on trading? Of course not. You can chat with a friend at this time.

One of the main tourist streets with shops - this is Grisia. Wandering around the city, you will still get to this place, to the Albi gate (to one of those that have been preserved).

Near the gate - this straight (almost) wide street - it is former strait. Oddly enough, but I liked to dine here, in that restaurant on the right. Their squids are excellent!

Of course, a story about the city without a story about the beaches would be, to put it mildly, incomplete. I don’t know how, but I went here to swim in the sea. All beaches in the vicinity are stone. These are either pebbles of various sizes, or boulders.
Since we live in the Centener area, our beaches are located near Hotel Eden- It's more convenient for us to go here.

The most important distinguishing feature The beaches of Croatia are a symbiosis of the sea and pines. My favorite combination: sea, pines, bays, mountains. Now, if you like this - to Croatia!
What does the beach look like in Rovinj? Of course, there are also slabs with steps into the water, as a rule, hotels build such beaches for themselves. But most of the beaches are tiny coves with pebbles among the boulders.

You can swim almost everywhere. In general, the entire coast from the borders of the city is such a big "beach". Yes, most (except hotel beaches) do not have showers, sun loungers, umbrellas, bars and other beach infrastructure. But we don't love her.

A few years ago, the city authorities equipped the beaches in Kuvi Bay near the Villas Rubin resort and Lone Beach, located next to the Lone 5 *, Mone Mulini 5 *, Eden 4 *, Park 3 * hotels. We went to Lone, it was convenient and close to get here, just 5-10 minutes through the park.

A good entry into the water, a good set of depth. Unfortunately, I could not convince my laziness to go to neighboring distant beaches. Although everything in the vicinity of those already mentioned, they climbed up to Cape Kurent. But behind the cape are famous - Kuvi, Villas Rubin!

Stand in the wind!
Well, living creatures, how without it? The sea feeds some, it just brings joy to others

And what are we going to play?
Basically, that's all I can say. Yes, there are no grandiose museums, there is a "normal" transparent, cool sea. But how great it is! Having rested from the crossings, swimming in plenty, admiring the views, we go further. I say goodbye to my dear hostess Anna, may God grant her long life. I take one last look at Rovinj. Next - Pula, KRK and much more ... Dali be ...

Goodbye Rovin!
