FAQ Holidays on Koh Samui on your own - prices and beaches. Short video about Koh Samui. When is the season. When is the best time to go

Is it worth going to Koh Samui? Of course, undoubtedly, definitely, on the very first flight! Ask why so many emotions in response to such a simple question? Because I returned from this wonderful island just a month ago and still cannot calm down from the emotions and impressions that captured me.

This vacation left only positive emotions, a sea of positive emotions and a great desire to return to Koh Samui again.

Judge for yourself: magnificent nature; the cleanest beaches who clean every morning; gentle warm sea without a single wrinkle of waves; very smiling and friendly Thais. On the island, without exaggeration, very, very tasty food. Compared to the same Phuket, European food is much better here. If you ask for something not spicy, then the dish is not brought spicy according to European standards, and not according to the standards of the Thais themselves (as was the case with us in Phuket).

Getting around the island is a pleasure. All roads are either paved or concrete with very good quality. On the island, you can rent a car or a motorbike and easily travel from one end to the other, completely regardless of the whims of excursion tour operators. We rented a motorbike and with pleasure traveled all over the island, and the road in the center of the island is also excellent, so it is quite possible to overcome it even on a bike. The island itself is not big, and if you plan a trip to any attraction in the morning, you can calmly and slowly ride back and forth, while still having time ... read more

Charming and bright island of Koh Samui

Koh Samui in February is quite hot and with high humidity. This was the first impression of arriving at a place praised by all our friends and acquaintances. The Land of Smiles really smiled warmly and wetly at us. But even this first impression did not overshadow the beauty of the nature of the island. As soon as we arrived at the resort, it became clear that we would live in paradise. The ennobled territory exuded with a mass of outlandish plantings a honey-tart aroma, a variety of colored butterflies, blue water pool, and walking peacocks did their job. Avanta conquered us, we did not regret that we chose this apart-hotel. Then, of course, we realized that it was not very convenient to get to the sea and rented a motorbike, the problem was solved, but the neighborhood with peacocks brought us "joy" the whole vacation, who does not know how they sing, they will not understand, but who knows, sympathize.

There are a variety of beaches on Koh Samui, which is why the reviews of tourists vary so much. If you take Chaweng, Lamai and Maenam, these are the places where most of our citizens are, they talk about dirty and very crowded beaches, but party-goers will like this place. There are many restaurants and bars there. According to our experience of scouts, I share really gorgeous beaches of the island, I warn you that it will not be easy to find some of them, but it’s worth a try, these are the beaches: Ban Tai - many palm trees, fine, pleasant and clean sand, suitable for children, smooth entry and clear crystal water , Lipanoy - good sand, an abundance of various shells, good for sunbathing, but shallow for swimming, not ... read more

Food and products

On average, 500 baht was spent on food per day - about 1000 rubles. With this money, we could safely eat in large shopping centers such as BigCi on the 4th floor in the food court, in small eateries, of which there are a lot on the island. Sometimes we bought ready meals at 7/11 or FamilyMart. We didn't prepare ourselves. Don't go to expensive restaurants either. For example, a large portion of Tom Yam, or noodles with chicken costs 40-50-60 baht (80-120 rubles). Beer on average about 90-120 rubles. They bought fruits in the markets, but they are more expensive than we even came out with - bananas from 70 baht (140 rubles), pineapple 80 baht (160 rubles).

Souvenirs and other goods

The child was bought clothes, T-shirts, blouses, glasses, towels, slippers, and so on little things. Prices are about the same as in Russia. The total cost of shopping is not more than 15,000 rubles for 2 months.

Cost of services and entertainment

They took a moped for 2 months, the price is 4000 baht (8000 rubles a month).

Total money spent on vacation

Breakfasts seemed to me somewhat overpriced (as it later turned out to be), so I went to neighboring cafes.

Maenam Beach is a very long beach located in the north of the island. Pleasant sand, good deep sea, almost no waves. Gentle entry into the sea. Along the beach there is a palm grove where you can hide from the sun. The beach, in my opinion, is suitable for people who prefer relaxing holiday or for families with children. There are few cafes and bars, in general the beach is not crowded. In the evening, only a few bars are open and you will hardly meet anyone on the beach.

Near Maenam Beach is Bo Phut Beach and is radically different from its neighbor: in the evenings it is fun and crowded. I really liked the waterfront. It seemed to me that the place is more suitable for youth recreation.

Lamai Beach is not a crowded beach (at least it was like that in March). Hotel beaches are equipped with everything you need, there were no showers in the rest of the territory, toilets are only for cafe visitors. Sunbeds can be taken there, but there are not too many of them and not enough for everyone (100 baht). If there is no umbrella, you will have to roast in the sun, as there is no natural shade on the beach (or almost none). The beach is quite long. I was in its southern part: deep sea with large boulders that you can suddenly stumble upon when swimming. It was stormy for several days, so I realized that this is not uncommon in March.

Where can you eat?

I really liked Mae Nam (Maenam Beach): excellent cuisine at the level of a good expensive restaurant, despite the fact that the prices are average. I note that they are not lower in comparison with other places, but in most cases the kitchen lost in comparison with Mae Nam. In addition, the institution is distinguished by a high quality of service. Excellent food presentation.

About the quality of food and service

Good food (with rare exceptions). Service varied, sometimes had to wait a long time.

How much does it cost to eat? About food prices.

Breakfast within 150 baht (near the hotel) - mostly coffee and something to it. Lunch cost me somewhere between 150-200 baht: as a rule, it was limited to one or two dishes, depending on the size of the portions, since the portions are often large, and I am generally reserved in food. It could be: pizza (180-280 baht), seafood salad (80-130 baht), vegetable salad (70-90 baht), chicken salad (100-130 baht), freshly squeezed juice (60-80 baht), soup (60-80 baht). Fast food was also present: burgers (130-150 baht), sandwich with tuna or chicken (100-130 baht). As for dinner, it turned out differently depending on the place and mood.

Mae Nam: rice with shrimp and vegetables - 120 baht, fresh - 60 baht, tom yum - 150 baht, seafood salad - 139 baht, burrito - 195 baht, baked rice in pineapple - 160 baht, coconut shake - 80 baht.

Koh Samui is white sand beaches, coconut palms, amazing rocks, islands and islets, crazy full moon parties, waterfalls and, of course, eternal summer. An important difference between Koh Samui and other resorts in Thailand is the absence of big waves on the sea all year round. And the rainy season on the island is not as pronounced as on the territory of the whole. This is a bounty resort where you can endlessly enjoy gorgeous views of virgin nature, blue sea and white sand.

Koh Samui is the second largest island after the island. Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand of the Pacific Ocean and covers an area of about 230 square kilometers. The distance to the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, is about 700 kilometers. To get from Koh Samui to the nearest point of the mainland, you need to overcome about 40 kilometers along the waters of the Gulf of Thailand.

There is everything for vacationers here, but it is still worth noting that the infrastructure of the island is not as well developed as, for example, on the island, in and on others major resorts Thailand. If you choose a tour to Koh Samui, you make the right choice. It is worth coming here for couples in search of a romantic getaway, as well as families with children.

Weather

The climate of Koh Samui compares favorably with the climate of other resorts. The rainy season and the hot season are not so pronounced here. It is important to note that holidays on Koh Samui will be comfortable not only in winter, but also in summer. Big waves and muddy seas on Koh Samui are absent all year round. The most rainfall occurs from October to December, but short showers at this time of the year are unlikely to spoil your holiday. The average annual air temperature on Koh Samui is 30-31 °С, water - 27-29 °С.

Hotels

The main feature of the island's hotels is the proximity of buildings or bungalows to the sea. In addition to five-star hotels offering luxurious vacations, here you can even live in a small house without water and electricity.

The latter option is suitable for those who want to plunge into the atmosphere of the untouched civilization of nature as much as possible.

Beaches

The clean beaches of Koh Samui are covered with white sand and surrounded by coconut palms. In total, there are more than 30 beaches along the perimeter of the island. During your vacation, you can visit several beaches to get to know the island better.

The most beautiful beaches are located on the east coast, for example, the famous Chaweng, the largest and busiest beach on the island and the center of tourist life. Tourists with children will love Bangpo Beach. If you are looking for solitude, head to the deserted coast of Talingngam Beach surrounded by cliffs.

Interesting entertainments are available on the tourist beaches of the island: kayaking, jet skiing, banana boating.

On the territory of little-visited beaches, any infrastructure may simply be absent. Only you, the clear sea and the gentle sun above your head!

Attractions

On Koh Samui, there is something for both adults and children. If you do not want to lie on the beach for the whole vacation, you can familiarize yourself with big amount interesting sights of the island. It will be comfortable for both elderly tourists and young people. For example, young people flock to the neighboring island of Koh Phangan, where huge discos take place under open sky: "Full Moon Party" (Full Moon Party).

Those who went on a well-deserved rest go to the cozy Maenam Beach, where you can admire the stunning sunsets. From Koh Samui, you can go to many islands, for example, to the "turtle" Tao, to go diving or snorkeling.

Very beautiful island Madsum is waiting for its guests on the white sand beaches that embrace the virgin tropical jungle. In the heart of Koh Samui, waterfalls, butterfly parks, snake farms are hidden of stunning beauty. Tourists with children will not be disappointed by visiting the tiger and leopard show, an aquarium with tropical fish.

Sightseeing lovers will not miss the famous rocks of Hin Ta and Hin Yai (Grandma and Grandpa), the Big Buddha and many beautiful stupas and temples.

Kitchen

Thai restaurants of the island are located literally at every turn. Wherever you stay during your vacation, you will always find something cozy place where you can enjoy authentic Thai cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere. A large number of cafes, restaurants and bars are located on the coastline, where you can not only eat delicious food, but also admire the views of the Gulf of Thailand. In addition to restaurants offering Thai cuisine, lovers of European, Russian, Indian, Chinese food they will always be able to also find an institution of interest to them.

If you want to get a complete understanding of Thai cuisine, we advise you to try some local dishes cooked on a macaroon (a scooter equipped for cooking).

Transport

The public transport of the island is songteo. Songteo is a brightly colored truck equipped to carry passengers. But it is worth noting that during the day songthaews, as a rule, follow a certain established route, while in the evening or at night they work exclusively as individual taxi. Prices for trips during the day and at night, of course, are very different. To avoid misunderstandings, be sure to check the cost with the driver before the start of your trip, and not at the place of arrival.

The remaining transport options to the island will invariably consist of ferry crossing. The nearest town on the mainland is Donsak, from whose pier ferries and boats depart daily to Koh Samui. In an hour and a half, the ferry will take you to the Bounty Island. You can get to Donsak by bus from Bangkok.

Another option on how to get from the capital of Thailand to Donsak is to take a train to Surat Thani, and from there take a regular bus to Donsak.

Souvenirs

On Koh Samui you can buy natural pearls, which will be a great gift for you or your loved ones. Another gift option is natural coconut oil, which is produced on the island.

We first arrived at Chaweng(Chaweng). There are a lot of hucksters, clingy types, solid shops and bars, etc. A minibus from the ferry to Chaweng cost 100 baht, stops on request.

Rented bike Honda PCX 150- he's very cool! Comfortable soft wide seats with a dividing pad (so no one moves out on anyone), stable, economical, there was enough power for all the mountains, a huge trunk, the gas tank cap is not in the trunk. Cost us 300 baht ($10) per day. Simpler models like the Honda Click or Scoopy cost 200-250 baht ($7-8). Prices are about the same level. For comparison, a daily rental costs half as much, and a monthly one is almost for nothing. We traveled all over the island.

Where to rent a motorcycle on Koh Samui

Motorcycle travel insurance

Regular policies do not cover riding motorcycles and mopeds. Separate sports insurance is required. The best option is to buy an insurance policy for active days from - this is international insurance, issued online, even if you are already on a trip, and covers riding a motorcycle.

First, we drove along several beaches and observation decks south of Chaweng. This Hat Thong beach.

This is the beach in the north. In the evening, the tide is out, the depth is very shallow.

Crabs dig sand and get such patterns.

This Grandmother and grandfather(Hin Ta and Hin Yai). Bike parking 10 baht. The entrance is free. Why grandma and grandpa? Look at the next two photos;)

Pagoda Lameso(Lameso). By itself, not so hot, but located near the sea and goes well with it. Entrance and parking are free.

There are many on Koh Samui waterfalls but most of them are cat tears

There is only one sensible waterfall - Na Muang 2, 80 meters high. But this is not one 80-meter piece, but cascades, and it is not visible in its entirety.

Parking and entry are free. At the beginning of the path there is a terrible dirty primer, and jeeps are offered to drive to the waterfall. After 50 meters, the primer comes to a comfortable concrete road :) The first waterfall is small and boring, and is covered with tourists. You need to go higher, and there will be a more beautiful and less crowded second waterfall.

Near both waterfalls, you can swim in muddy water, but it will not be like swimming under the streams that we had on.

There are a lot of things near the waterfalls entertainment infrastructure: mini-zoo, rope park, waterslides, butterfly garden, elephant rides, restaurants, etc. and so on.

We were rolling on elephants on Koh Chang two years ago, and since then we do not recommend anyone to do this:
1) they beat these unfortunate elephants hard for everything,
2) Elephant riding is soooo boring.
So, we call for a boycott of this business!

We went to observation deck at Peak View Restaurant. See the views 10 baht, if you eat with them - for free. We got on the day the restaurant was closed and got in for free. It's good in the mountains: cool, green, quiet, the air is wonderful. This is where I would live. And the beaches and shops are only half an hour away. The views were weak, they don’t even pull on 10 baht.

And so - most cool place on Koh Samui - Magic Garden (Tanim magic garden) ! This is a garden with a waterfall. There are a lot of mossy old statues, old houses overgrown with lianas and cobwebs, trees with knotty roots... a very soulful and magical place :) It seems that now somewhere among the trees a goblin, water or mavka will flash :) Something like And . Entrance 80 baht.

To the observation deck and Magic Garden travel through military unit. The soldiers are aware and pass without problems and even tell where to turn. Langkawi, there are not as many interesting things as in Bali (, ), not as pleasant as in Phuket. It is very dirty everywhere, in the rain, rivers of mud flow through the streets, garbage is lying everywhere. Reminds me of Crimea in the 1990s. We had a goal to take a break from a busy diving program (19 dives in 7 days) and a bunch of trips, prepare more blog articles, sort out photos and videos, and we fulfilled this goal. It would be worth going to Koh Phangan and Koh Tau, but because of the stupid full moon party on Koh Phangan, there is hell, trash and waste, and the prices are such that even Australians grab their heads.

Koh Samui is an island located in the Chumphon Archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand, about 700 km south of Bangkok and 80 km from the eastern coastline of Southern Thailand.

This is the second most popular place to visit in Thailand, which amazes tourists with its amazing natural beauty and diversity. Home to nearly 40,000 full-time residents, 90% of whom are Buddhists.

The area is surrounded by palm trees, coconuts and fruits are grown on the coastline and on the coastal lowlands, the slopes of the central granite massif are covered with virgin tropical forest. The island is 25 km long and 21 km wide.

Koh Samui is big enough to be adventurous, despite being able to get around on a motorcycle or car in a couple of hours.

When is the season. When is the best time to go

Koh Samui's weather is slightly different from the weather in other parts of Thailand. From April to September, when most of the country has its rainy season, Koh Samui remains quite dry, but from October to December it is quite damp. WITH Koh Samui season drought lasts from January to March. You can navigate the prices for tours to Koh Samui from Russia.

Koh Samui in summer

The summer months on the island cannot boast of perfect weather. The air temperature is quite democratic, but the humidity rises sharply, which results in a terrible stuffiness. Added to this is the approaching rainy season, in the evening and at night, vacationers can be upset by passing showers, although not very long (no more than an hour). With sunrise, the soil dries out quickly, and the sun does not spare vacationers. The sea is quite calm, the only negative may be the ongoing daily low tides. On some beaches, it is especially noticeable how the water, several meters away from the coast, and for some, such a picture may seem frightening.

Koh Samui in autumn

The beginning of autumn can easily please tourists who come to Koh Samui. When to go if not in the summer? - and the sun warms well, and there is no wind, and the sea is quite calm. Almost the whole of September can be spent on beaches of Koh Samui and enjoy the beautiful weather, although this month is considered the end beach season. Starting from October, the island is gradually enveloped by a cyclone of rains and gusty winds. The temperature drops by about 1-2 degrees every month, and on average it is 27 degrees for air and 26 degrees for water. Exhausting rains, which last about 5 hours a day, and intense gusty winds make it impossible to enjoy the island as beach resort. The water is warm, but weather conditions, very cloudy. Several autumn days threaten with monthly precipitation. Cloudy weather prevails. Autumn is perfect for excursion tours. Due to the lack of a significant flow of tourists in autumn, you can safely visit the temples or study the history of this place in more detail.

Koh Samui in spring

Everything blooms in spring, and Koh Samui is no exception. The variety of color palette that the rich flora of the island can showcase attracts a new flow of tourists. In April, the scorching sun heats the air up to 35 degrees, the thermometer often exceeds this mark, but even this cannot stop exotic lovers.

The sea is still undead with its calm, its temperature reaches 29 degrees, only occasionally vacationers can frolic on small waves. With the end of spring, the weather is on the decline. The rainy season is soon approaching, so the air at the end of April may seem stuffy.

Koh Samui in winter

Winter is considered the peak tourist holiday on Koh Samui. In winter, the weather is very stable and the very “velvet season” begins. It is still recommended to fly to the island in the second decade of December, since the beginning of this month may turn out to be cloudy and rainy, it is almost impossible to predict this. Such vagaries of the weather can occur due to the change and formation of the season. Otherwise, the winter months delight vacationers with bright sun and evening freshness, the sea is clear with rare, not big waves - the perfect time to enjoy all the advantages of a seaside resort.

  • Water Buffalo Fights - rich tradition islands - fighting arenas of water buffaloes. There is no timetable for the fights, but the locals will know the dates and you may see occasional signs on the road announcing the day of the fight.

Beaches. Which is better

The main reason to visit Koh Samui is the beaches as it is quite big Island with fabulous beaches. The most popular and commercialized beaches are Lamai, while the northern beaches of Mae Nam (Mae Nam), Bophut (Bophut), Bang Rak (Bang Rak, Big Buddha) and Choeng Mon and the villages adjacent to them are the most quiet places and the beaches west coast relatively quiet. Clarifications: Bophut and Choeng Mon are not very good for swimming because of the muddy water. The beaches and Lamai are cleaner sea water.

  • Nathon is the port and administrative center of Koh Samui, which attracts tourists.
  • Laem Yai is located on the northwestern edge of the island; a secluded beach overlooking the Angthong Islands.
  • Mae Nam is a quiet and beautiful beach on the north coast.
  • Bophut is known for its calm but fast growing fishermen's village.
  • Bang Rak is located on the northeastern edge, the house Big Buddha.
  • Chongmon - quiet northern beach coast.
  • Chaweng is the largest and most developed beach with an unusual mixture of luxury hotels and small tourist inns and an active nightlife.
  • Lamai is Koh Samui's "second" beach, south of Chaweng, with lots of active nightlife and chic resorts and restaurants.
  • The southern coast of Koh Samui (Samui South Coast) - the small beaches of Ban Hua Thanon (Ban Hua Thanon), Nahai (Na Khai), Lam Set (Laem Set), Bang Kao (Bang Kao) and Thong Krut (Thong Krut).

Chaweng beach

The main beach on Koh Samui that has been developed since the early 1990s. Just 20 years ago the beach was home to a handful of wooden bungalows, but now the place is littered with hotels, Italian pizzerias, Irish pubs and even go-go bars. Koh Samui's nightlife is becoming legendary, but, unfortunately, it doesn't always attract exemplary tourists. Hippie tourists gave way to Chaweng "beer hooligans". Now it's a place for a noisy and reckless party.

Lamai beach

Like Chaweng, Lamai has been transformed from a hippie hangout to a party and fun place with bars and an exciting nightlife. However, the beach is in better condition than Chaweng and it is not so easy to find a place to stay because there are always a lot of people here. If you want to relax in quiet place, Lamai is not the most ideal place for you.

There are some interesting rock formations on the southern edge of Lamai Beach.

Lamai Island itself is located in the southeast of Koh Samui, almost 10 kilometers from Chaweng.

Beachmaenam(Mae Nam Beach)

This calm beach, located in the north of the island, suitable for swimming and sunbathing, especially for families with children, due to the shallow water.

Bophut Beach

Located in the north of the island, it is a popular starting point for diving. This place is not as developed as Chaweng, but there are plenty of restaurants, shops and bars.

Choengmon Beach

Located in the northeast of Koh Samui, just 10 minutes from Chaweng. Unlike the latter, this is the perfect place to unwind.

BeachBigBuddha(Big Buddha Beach)

Located in the northeast of Koh Samui, it offers visitors a good swimming area and great views. The area has developed over the years and now you can find many restaurants, shops and bars.

Churches and temples. Which are worth a visit

Wat Khunaram Koh Samui

This temple is the most famous temple because of his mummified monk, who is on display in public. The mummy sits upright in a glass coffin and the worshipers present him with flowers and incense. In reality, the mummy is the body of a highly revered former temple abbot who was also a master of meditation and was able to predict his own death.

However, what is interesting is the fact that the mummy wears a large pair of sunglasses and is surrounded almost everywhere by huts selling overpriced drinks and pancakes.

Samui Pagoda Laem Sor (Laem Sor Pagoda Koh Samui)

This chedi (pagoda) is located in Laem Sor Temple, one of the most famous temples to Koh Samui. The building, with its yellow tiles that exude a golden aura, is quite an imposing and bewitching sight.

Food. What to try

Koh Samui is famous for its coconuts, which are available everywhere and quite tasty. The island has a good selection of seafood, although during the peak tourist season, demand often exceeds local supply. Larger beaches such as Bophut have reputable international restaurants (often owned by foreign couples living in Thailand).

South Thai food is notorious for its spiciness. Most of cuisine comes from Malay, Indonesian and Indian cuisine. Favorite Southern dishes include Indian-style Muslim curry (Massaman), rice noodles in fish curry sauce (Kanom Jin), and biryani chicken. Popular local food is pickled eggs and nephelium.

The double price is unfortunately common: some restaurants have two menus, one for tourists and one for locals, for whom the price is 1/4 of the price for foreigners. Main meals in a standard Thai restaurant should cost less than 100 baht (excluding seafood dishes). If the prices seem unreasonably high, go to another restaurant. Always check prices and menus first so you don't have to argue when the bill arrives.

Beverages

There are countless varieties of establishments selling drinks, ranging from pubs for loud and brazen tourists to erotic pubs to candle-lit romantic bars in Bophut. Price - 80 baht for local beer (Singha, Tiger, Chang, Heineken) and up to two times more for imported. Wine is especially expensive and usually costs over 2,000 baht per bottle.

Safety. What to watch out for

  • Tap water is not potable. Drinks in sealed bottles are sold everywhere. Be safe in restaurants too, as some use unsafe tap water for ice in drinks (others make it from bottled/safe water). Tap water in most hotels should not be used for drinking or brushing teeth unless it is clearly labeled as safe.
  • Motorcycles are more dangerous than jeeps, trucks and other vehicles that are available for rent at reasonable prices and are significantly safer. If you are going to use a motorcycle, always wear a helmet and never get behind the wheel while intoxicated, as the roads are dangerous and with a lot of bumps.
  • After a good time at the party at Bophut and Lamai, take a taxi to take you home. Be careful. Taxi drivers often cheat drunk people. It is not uncommon for an auto rickshaw driver to ask for 50 baht per kilometer of travel (for example, in the main market).
  • IN Lately appeared a large number of quads on the road. Take care as ATVs are not registered.
  • Also be careful on the beaches at night because of the crimes that are often committed there.
  • If you are traveling to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao by bus, do not keep any valuables in your luggage. "Songserm Travel" reports about thefts from buses. Do not leave things unattended when you get off the train to the islands.

Koh Samui on the map of Thailand

Story

The first foreigners who arrived on Koh Samui back in the 70s were hippies. They were followed by ordinary tourists. In the mid 80s local authorities decided to turn Koh Samui into tourist resort. The construction of hotels, restaurants, shops and other amenities to which Europeans and Americans are so accustomed began. Fortunately, the benefits of civilization were limited to coastal areas, not affecting the center of the island.

There is still untouched jungle. By the way, there is no trace of the hippies and their dilapidated huts; now package tourists and independent travelers stop at the resort.

How to get to Koh Samui

Cheap flights to Bangkok

You can buy tickets to Thailand as profitably as possible with the help of special search engines that collect data from all airlines.

By bus

Buses run from any city in Thailand. This is a fairly cheap, but also tiring way to get to Koh Samui. In some cases, there will be several transfers along the way. From Bangkok to the pier, transport takes at least 12 hours, from Phuket - 4.5-5 hours. Ferry to the island - 1-1.5 hours.

By land and water

Most ferries depart from the mainland from Suratthani and Chumpon (closer to Koh Tao). There are a lot of people going to these places. land transport, tickets for which can be bought everywhere in travel agencies or bus stations of cities and resorts in Thailand or. Koh Samui also has a water connection with Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.

From the last tuk-tuks carry tourists to the beaches. The price is fixed - up to any locality the fare is 60 baht. True, Thais often like to "breed" newcomers, asking for 100. But if you do not agree to this price, then they will take you for the standard 60 baht. It takes about 25-35 minutes to go to Chaweng and Lamai. The main road encircles the entire island around the perimeter, sometimes it runs a few meters from the coast (for example, in the north), sometimes a kilometer from it (on Chaweng). From the Main Road there are branches that lead to the beaches.

Transport

There are no problems with movement on the island. Transportation is provided by public songthaews, tuk-tuks, motorcycle taxis, air-conditioned taxis and minivans. In addition, you can rent a motorbike or car on your own.

1. Songteo.

The cheapest way to get around is by songteo, which is exactly the same as in Pattaya - a pickup truck with two parallel seats. On them you can get to any beach, except for the northeast.

The fare is 50-60 baht per person. If you want to get to the airport and the northeast coast, then you can hire an empty songthaew as a tuk-tuk. In this case, the price is negotiable and, for example, you can get to the airport for 300 baht (not per person, but for the whole car).

2. Air-conditioned taxi.

This is the most expensive form of transport on Koh Samui, they are ordinary cars painted in bright colors.

While there are few of them, the competition is small and they ask for large fares. Meters rarely turn on, usually the price is negotiable and starts from 300 baht between neighboring beaches.

3. Motorcycle taxi.

A trip on the back seat of a motorcycle as a passenger costs, like everywhere else in Thailand - for 1-2 km, about 30 baht. On Koh Samui, the distances are large, so getting from one beach to another (which is 3-4 km) will cost around 100 baht.

4. Minibuses (minivans).

They go from the airport and the pier in Nathon, and also take tourists to places of interest as part of excursions.

5. Transport rental.

Most best option for those who come to long time. There are motorbike rental offices on any beach, as well as on the pier in Nathon, where most ships sail from the mainland. The price depends on the season and location. In Nathon can be found for 150 baht per day, and tourist places - for 200 baht.

Who should go to Koh Samui

Holidays on Koh Samui are suitable for those for whom the clear sea and sparsely populated beaches are a priority. If you are looking for a vibrant nightlife with lots of discos, nightclubs, Go Go bars and thousands of available girls, then Koh Samui is not for you. In small numbers, it is represented only in Chaweng, and, moreover, it is mainly limited to open-air drinking bars where you can find a girlfriend for the night. But this is only a pitiful semblance of the incendiary Volkin Street in Pattaya or Bangla Road in Phuket.

But lovers of silence and leisurely rest will like Koh Samui.

There are very few people on the beaches, even in high season from December to March. Here you will not feel the friendly elbow of your sunbed neighbor, simply because they are located at a great distance from each other (unlike Pattaya and Phuket, where the distance between sun loungers is no more than half a meter). And in general, there are very few sunbeds and umbrellas on Koh Samui and they are only near the hotels.

What to do and what to visit

For an initial acquaintance with the island, we recommend going to.

For those who like to buy something abroad, the most popular places for shopping are described:.

Beaches

Unlike Phuket, Koh Samui has both in the west, and in the east, and in the south, and in the north. The most popular is Chaweng. Here the most developed tourism infrastructure- many hotels, shops, markets, restaurants, massage parlors, bars and entertainment. During the day you can ride jet skis, skis, bananas and paragliders, and at night you can “raid” one of the restaurants or bars with girls.

Chaweng is slightly inferior to Lamai, where all the above-mentioned benefits of civilization are smaller. And after sunset it is quieter here. All other beaches offer only sea, sun, palm trees, accommodation, several mini-markets, restaurants and drinking establishments. In the capital of Koh Samui - Nathon - there are almost no tourists, since there is no normal beach. Mostly Thais live here.

Climate

Koh Samui has a tropical humid climate. Throughout the year, the air temperature fluctuates around +30 ... +32 (in December-March a little cooler, in April-May - a little hotter). From June to November, there are heavy rains several times a week, which can last for several hours. Rainiest months: May, September, October, November. The driest: January, February, March, April. The water temperature in the sea is constant and is +27 - +28 degrees.
