Hamad transit international airport. Qatar Airways: Clark (CRK) - Hamad (DOH) plus long layover in Doha

Hi all!

With different frequency and intensity, you have to act as an air passenger. And one of the sources of information in preparation for travel, or even just curiosity, for me is this wonderful site.
Respect and respect to the administrator, authors, commentators and just readers!

I was surprised to find that Qatar Airways, quite popular among Russians in the Asian direction, there are only two reviews. And the last one is over three years old.
Well, catch a flight review from the west side Pacific Ocean in the very Persian Gulf.

Departure date: September 29, 2015, Tuesday
Flight: QR 0931
Where: international Airport Clark (CRK), Philippines
Where: Hamad International Airport (DOH), Qatar
Airplane: Airbus A330-300, MSN 734
Flight duration (actual): 8 hours 31 minutes

Flight tracking according to Flightradar24:

Disclaimer: all photos in present. review made on the phone. In some places, the focus is blurred, the very concept of “color reproduction” is defiled, and the horizon is shamelessly littered.
I recognize the quality claims as justified in advance, so please do not express

The flight was carried out during an independent tour to the Philippines in the fall of 2015.

Clark International Airport (CRK)
The airport is also known as Clarkfield.
Former name- International Airport. Diosdado Macapagal.

Until the early 1990s, one of the strongholds of the US military aviation in the Western Pacific, the US Air Force Clark Air Base, was located on the capital Philippine island of Luzon. The air base occupied the territory between the cities of Angeles and Mabalacat, 95 km from the capital of the Philippines - Manila.

However, in 1991, the air base was closed and evacuated due to the eruption of Mount Pinatubo and the typhoon that followed. In connection with the end cold war the restoration of the air base was deemed inappropriate.
The Filipinos, without hesitation, raked up the volcanic ash and placed their own military and civilian facilities on the vast territory of the finished air base.

One of these facilities was the civilian airport established in 1993, from which we were to fly to Qatar.
Clarkfield Airport, both in status and performance, is the island's second airport. Passengers are served by one small terminal, the passenger flow in 2013 amounted to just over 1 million people.
For comparison, main airport islands - Manila's Ninoy Aquino multi-terminal airport - passed more than 31 million passengers during the same period.

We drove to the airport departure area by taxi, the road from the center of Angeles took about 15 minutes.
Already at the entrance you can see that the airport is working, but, to put it mildly, not overloaded. In the background is the arrivals area.

Relaxed party under the canopy in the unloading area for vehicles

At the entrance to the departure hall, employees in uniform check passports and ticket printouts, and only after that they let them into the airport building

Immediately at the entrance - translucence and inspection of luggage. Our luggage with apologies, but they scuffed it, asked to open it, asked what we were carrying. Taking pictures there, of course, is not allowed.

Having passed the valiant workers of control and security, we go out to the check-in hall for flights and baggage clearance. Lively only in the farthest part of the hall from us. Information desks of Qatar Airways also shine there. Obviously, we are there.

Confidence is added by the fact that no more registration desks in the hall are open.

We turn around at the entrance to the airport building and the point of primary inspection

And obediently we stand in the general queue - we fly economy, we checked in online, but the boarding passes were not printed.

Or rather, while someone responsibly stands in line, I go for a short walk around this hall.
At the wall opposite the check-in counters there are exchangers and a counter for paying state fees.

In the left corner of the hall there is a small waiting area, a cafe where you can also smoke, and toilets.
Judging by the stands and fences, low-cost airlines Cebu Pacific and Air Asia, Hong Kong's Dragonair, and our Qatar Airways have their check-in counters at the airport.

Familiarization with the scoreboard confirms the impression of a relaxed mode of operation of the airport. The flight following ours is planned as early as seven hours after the departure of our board - the Tiger Air low-cost airline will leave for Singapore.

In the meantime, the airline employees pull us out of the general queue and, despite the fact that we did not have printed boarding passes, we were escorted to a bag-drop counter that did not have queues.

Voila, boarding passes received, luggage checked in. We received boarding cards in a yellow envelope, which means a long transfer in Doha.

And then we go to a clean-sterile-duty-free zone, in front of which passport control awaits us, transillumination hand luggage and... paying the airport tax in the booth in the center of the next photo.
The Philippines is one of those notable countries, Where airport taxes are paid personally by passengers and are not included in the ticket price.
Only at some airports and for some destinations in the Philippines, this rule does not apply. In our case, we paid 700 Philippine pesos per person.

And yet we pass directly to the departure zone. This zone has three waiting rooms: two - on the first floor, one - on the second.

The compact airport is notable for the fact that there is no distinction between passengers of international and local flights in the departure area. We freely walked around all the halls both this time and during the previous "intra-Philippine" flight from this airport.

The left hall on the first floor, boarding gates 1 and 2, is used for passengers of international flights of low cost airlines.
There are rows of shops with souvenirs and kiosks with fast food.

On the way to this hall you can catch a good coffee

The right hall on the first floor, boarding gate 3, is used for local airlines. Domestic flights from Clark now only low-cost airlines make flights.

Looking through the stained-glass window of the first floor onto the platform, we note with satisfaction the presence of our A330-300.
No other aircraft were found in sight.

Yes, for aircraft of non-greedy airlines, Clark Airport was equipped with air bridges, through which boarding is carried out from the waiting room on the second floor.
That's where we headed. As the most athletic - on the escalator.

The hall is actively filled with our fellow travelers on the flight.

In stock - shops with souvenirs and eateries, near one of which stewardesses from our flight were caught.
There are also lounges for privileged passengers, a smoking room and even a massage parlour.

We observe the end of the landing of the aircraft crew.

And announce boarding for passengers. Loaded people surprisingly civilized, without queues, haste and hustle.

In the plane we pass the turn of one of the two air bridges.

And along the way, I manage to capture the tail and nose of our A330, as well as the repair hangar and the parking lot of the boards that have departed for a well-deserved rest.

From the position of a passenger, Clark Airport in the existing load can only be assessed positively. Everything works as it should, the air is adequately conditioned, the toilets are in decent condition, there are plenty of places to sit down, they won’t let you die of hunger, there are teleports, etc. Nothing else is needed for a standard flight.

Flight QR 0931 Qatar Airways

Airbus A330-300, Reg A7-AEG, MSN 734.
Purchased by Qatar Airways 9.5 years ago "new from showroom"
The layout is two-class: one business class cabin, two - economy.

With the arrival of the new A350s, the Qataris will gradually withdraw the 330s.
But I like the A330, although the already discontinued A340, of course, is more beautiful.

When landing salons did not photograph.
Photos of the first and second economy class cabins were taken already in flight.

I think the distance between the seats for the economy is excellent

Blankets, pillows and passenger kits are laid out for each seat

Before takeoff, the flight attendants handed out refreshing wipes.

The aircraft is being towed towards the runway.

Takeoff video:

Let's get acquainted with the contents of the pocket. Headphones for entertainment system, hygiene bag, safety instructions and two glossy editions.

Passenger kit contents: sleep band, earplugs, toothbrush+paste, socks

And then the flight attendants deliver menus and offer drinks.

Any drinks on the menu are available without restrictions and additional fee throughout the flight. Drinks were provided to passengers both on demand and simply offered regularly throughout the flight.

Immediately about feeding. During the flight we were fed twice according to the menu. Everything tastes much better than it looks in the photo. We liked.
Who wanted to, could ask to repeat - they did not refuse. We didn't ask, we had enough.

The privacy rooms are cleaned, various hygiene items, liquid soap, toilet (in perfumery meaning) water and moisturizing hand cream are available.

The lights were dimmed for most of the flight. Passengers are immersed in sleep or entertainment system.

Details about the entertainment system itself.
On their aircraft, the Qataris install different types such systems. In addition to this, I dealt with three more. The systems differ in design and menu organization, control method and functionality.

This system is one of the "old". The screen is not touch, the control is carried out from the remote control located in the armrest. Personally, I like this "old-fashioned" way of managing.
This type of remote control is used or has been used on aircraft of many airlines. It is two-, or rather, four-sided. It can also be used as a handset for making calls or a card reader for paying for services with a bank card.

The Russian language is available in the system, there are collections of the most popular and fresh content.

The choice of films is large, there is a breakdown by groups, countries, etc.

There are annotations for the films, for some you can watch the trailer.

There are films available in different languages and with different subtitles

Large selection of music

But with the choice of games specifically in this system - not very much.

There is an opportunity to contact the earth for a fee

Or call a fellow traveler on a flight by dialing his seat number

A bunch of modes of reflection of the current information about the flight.

Responsible meals and drinks, sleep, a couple of movies, walk around the cabin, torment the entertainment system - and more than 8 hours of flight are left behind ..
Through the porthole, you can already see the outlines of the capital of Qatar appearing through the sandy dust of the desert.

Landing video (with authoritative reasoning)

We taxi up to the terminal building and moor to the air bridges.
While the people are pulling out their bags from the luggage racks, we are observing a fellow of our board.

The overall impression of the flight is positive. We are satisfied, there are no complaints about the a / c.

Hamad International Airport (DOH), long-term connection

New, opened in spring 2014 modern airport, built to replace the old "shed" - Doha Airport.
Given the scale of the airport, it is almost impossible to prepare an exhaustive review of it within the framework of this review.
Therefore, I offer those photographs that I managed to make while moving in Hamada.

The plane was left on the air bridges, and immediately the escalator took us to one of the meeting transfer passengers spacious galleries.
One floor below - a "clean" departure area with gates, waiting rooms and duty-free establishments.

Leaving travelators without work is out of our principles.

To the comrades who have completed the journey - straight ahead, to the exit to the city. We turn left.

A farewell look through the window at the three hundred and thirtieth that brought us

In order to enter the "sterile" departure area, arriving transit passengers need to go through security control. But we need to go straight and left to the service counters transit passengers.

And that's why. The duration of our connection - the time between arrival in Doha and the departure of the next flight to Moscow - as much as 16 hours. Based on our fare and other conditions, we were eligible for the Qatar Airways Transit Offer - Hotel Provision at Airline Expenses (STPC).
In such cases, the airline, at its own expense, issues to the passenger transit visa, hotel, transfer to the hotel and back, as well as meals.
We have already used this service at Qatar lines and were satisfied - good hotel, excellent feeding, the opportunity to relax between flights and see Doha for the same ticket price.
For the planned transfer, we received a confirmation from the airline in advance about the hotel and expected to again stick out by the pool or in the hotel restaurant and sleep in anticipation of a flight to Moscow ... We expected ...
To do this, we went to the transit passenger accommodation desks and submitted a set of documents to the employee - passports, boarding passes and confirmation of the provision of the hotel.

We were asked to sit down in a small waiting area and wait - the employees of the a / c agreed with the border guards on the provision of a transit visa.
During the waiting time, I managed to capture for history: 1) the scoreboard; 2) drinking fountains (there are plenty of them throughout the airport); 3) the restroom - everything is decent and clean.

But the airline employee who came with our passports reported disappointing news. We were denied a transit visa. And even despite the presence in our passports of successfully closed Qatari visas, which we received earlier.

The point is this. In the usual way, applying for a visa through the embassy, Russians have been unable to get to Qatar for a year and a half. Russians are not given visas to Qatar. The reason is the diplomatic conflict between Qatar and the Russian Federation, which is based on disagreements on the Syrian issue. The Russian Federation supports the government of Bashar al-Assad, and Qatar supports the Syrian opposition.
Until recently, Russians could only obtain a transit visa, and only through an airline when connecting in Doha. And so we did.
But the monitored transplant took place in the early days of the bombing of Syria by the Russian military aviation. By this, the Qataris were offended so much that they decided not to let the Russians in at all. Even in transit. Sadness...

Representatives of the a / c tried to book us an airport hotel. To check in there, you don’t need to formally cross the Qatari border - the hotel is located in the duty-free zone. But there were no available rooms in the hotel. I later checked this independently - it's true.

With terrible apologies, we were given coupons for food at the airport (two lunches and breakfast per person, we did not master it), and also, at the expense of the company, they issued passes to the business lounge - Orix Lounge.

But more on that later... Because... we did get to Qatar that evening! And without a visa!

Pressed down by a cruel fate, we passed the security screening and found ourselves at the main intersection of the departure zone, from where each passenger goes to the airport wing he needs to boarding gates.

It is in the area of \u200b\u200bthis main intersection that the bulk of all airport duty-free establishments are located. There are a lot of establishments, and there will be no photo tour of them in my review. Still, shopping is a separate issue.

At the very crossroads there is a scoreboard, an information desk... And what is impossible not to notice is the object of contemporary art "Lampa".

This bear, by the way, in addition to being the object of all sorts of banter, does an excellent job with the function of a landmark.
In general, despite the scale, it is extremely difficult to get lost in Hamada. The space is organized very simply, information signs are everywhere.

So, with his left hand, the bear pointed to our loophole in Doha for this evening.
For transit passengers with long layovers Qatar Airways offer the Doha City Tour service, i.e. bus tour of the capital of Qatar.

If you turn your back on the bear, the tour check-in counter is on the left towards the B wing.

There we registered and received vouchers for a city tour. No additional payments from the passenger for the tour are charged.

At the appointed time, we arrived at this counter and became part of organized group, which a specially trained officer took to passport control.
We passed passport control! And all because for a city tour a visa (which we were denied) is not issued. The border guards simply put entry stamps in their passports with a special note in Arabic. Only the city tour voucher is checked.
Eventually:

We are officially on the territory of "forbidden" Qatar!
Our group was led to the bus so quickly that it was difficult to manage to take pictures of something on the go.
Luggage tapes:

Meeting comrades and the arrivals hall:

And we are taken to the boarding area for arriving passengers to the waiting point for our bus. Doha, as usual, meets us with real heat.

Behind the palm trees and the fence is a huge parking lot with a system of sun awnings

Closed and, for sure, air-conditioned transition from the parking lot to the airport building

Our bus is coming. The bus took us and was well air-conditioned. Nothing more was required of him.

The tour lasted three hours. It was interesting. In several places of interest there were stops for a walk. The guide led the tour well, in understandable English told various curiosities.
But here with photographs rotten. Because I could take pictures only with a shovel, which, moreover, in this heat after the bus, instantly fogged up. A certain amount of sand dust in the air also made it difficult to shoot distant objects.
General summary - the Qataris live more than curly.

At the end of the tour, satisfied tourists were taken back.
For the competition "the most blurry photo" I put up photos taken from the bus on the go:
1) Personal () airport of the royal family of Qatar;
2) Hamad airport itself, entrance to the departure area.

We tell the guide and driver merci, and our group is again taken by express to passport control.
Departing passenger unloading area.

Huge check-in and baggage check-in area

Having passed the control and screening, we found ourselves at a familiar central intersection. There were more people at night.

It's time to start redeeming the meal vouchers we've received.
In addition to individual cafes and restaurants, the airport also has a food court.

But we had to gut the food vouchers in the dining room with the romantic name "March". Finding it is easy, it is directly indicated, ahem, between the legs of a yellow bear.

The establishment is quite nice - spacious, deserted and quiet. The food was (again) more edible than it looks in the photo.
Our vouchers included three full meals. Plus, as we were told in the March itself, if we want - coffee and sandwiches during the night.
We only went there twice.

Most of the time we spent (and overslept) in the Orix Lounge, access to which we, flying economy, issued a / c due to failure to obtain a visa for the hotel.
Finding this lounge is easy - behind the left shoulder of the bear, follow the sign, take the elevator to the second floor.

Well, the main theme. Snacks and full meals are of high quality, drinks too. Over time, the range has changed and expanded. All this, of course, does not require separate payment.

The lounge also has a family room.

gaming

Room with computers and internet access

And the quiet zone where we are most nights and slept

There are also decent showers with sets of everything you need. Wash showers, of course, after each visitor.

And so our docking in Doha took place.
Despite the negativity with the refusal of a transit visa, these sixteen hours were not the most painful.

The central lobby from the yellow bear led to the boarding gate we needed for the morning flight to Moscow. The lobbies are long and spacious, but given the ease of organization and the abundance of signs, it is impossible to get lost.

On this review, as it were ... everything.
Thank you, I hope it was informative or even useful.
Travel, fly, be healthy and happy

Fly with Qatar Airways and make connections at Hamad International Airport - that's how I wanted to title this article. Firstly, because we have not yet seen such excellent service in the economy class of an aircraft, and secondly, because Hamad Airport in Doha is the best example of how to make the country's main airport convenient, beautiful, and interesting. In both cases, the most important thing is the real concern for passengers.

Qatar Airways

From a conversation with a friend:

- How did you get there?
– Excellent, we have never flown so cool in economy class!
- For the first time I hear that the economy was praised ...

Why did we like five-hour, seemingly tedious flights with Qatar Airways? I'll tell you in order.

Even though we had single ticket for three flights (Chelyabinsk-Moscow-Doha-Colombo), at check-in at the Chelyabinsk airport we were given only one boarding pass. However, the luggage was checked in to the final destination. In Moscow Domodedovo, we had to go through another check-in for the flight, where we were asked to present our luggage coupons and confirmed that our luggage had been sent to Colombo. And after registration, they gave us two tickets at once (to Doha and from there to Colombo) in a bright orange envelope.

The color of the envelope is a signal to employees Hamad airport in the capital of Qatar, Doha. If the color is green, you won’t get to the airport at all, you will be picked up from one plane and immediately taken to another. Orange color means a short connection, that is, you will get to the terminal and immediately go to the desired gate to board the next flight. It was these envelopes that were given to us - we had to spend 55 minutes at the airport. Yellow envelope means long docking. No need to be afraid of this, Hamad is the very place where it will be interesting to hang out for a few hours. But more on that below.

When passing through border control, a service officer strictly asked for what purpose I was flying to Qatar. Having learned that we had only a docking there, he smiled and put a seal. Probably, these are increased security measures, after all, a Muslim state.

Finally, all obstacles are passed, Russian chocolate is in duty free bought (we always take Russian chocolate for possible presents for children, maids and “you never know where it comes in handy”). We stand at the right gate and admire the young flight attendants of our flight. Beautiful form, beautiful smiling girls. Not all, by the way, are of Arab nationality - the one on the left in the photo is Serbian.

And here we are on the plane! After the small Airbus S7, the dimensions are impressive. But more striking is the comfort of the chairs, the headrests (with folding side parts so that the head does not dangle) ... And on each chair there is a pillow and a blanket in a disposable package. This is not handing out blankets to you. charter flight, where, if you didn’t manage to snatch right away, then don’t freeze - it turns out that you didn’t have enough ...

On different Qatar flights Airways (and we, it turns out, flew with them four times per trip) have their own nuances, but the main “chips” are the same, so I will describe everything at once.

No tight rows and no knees resting against the chair in front. There is even a special footrest that can be conveniently removed under the seat (it must be raised during takeoff and landing).

USB port for phone charging? And please! Personal TV? Nate!

In the armrest of your chair there is a remote control with which you can control the screen, turn on the light or ventilation, call the flight attendant and even ... make a phone call.

What is offered to us in the menu on the screen? A large selection of films (including in Russian), games (both for adults and children), music, information about the flight and much more... not to carry with you is much more convenient.

For five hours of flight, you can enjoy watching a couple of films. But I was more impressed with the interactive map. Information about the route, about where the plane is flying to this moment, nearby cities and information about them, time zones, altitude, temperature, flight time - very informative! And then you’re flying in an incomprehensible place, staring at the clouds passing by from below ... And then - the city looked out into the gap, and you know which one, right?

Airplane food is another beautiful song. I mean, the song, not the food. Salad, cheese and butter, a bun, water in an airtight glass, a delicious hot dish (with beef or chicken, as well as vegetarian), a cake for dessert, a chocolate bar - all in beautiful plastic containers with patterned lids, plus translucent plastic cutlery. Drinks - for every taste. Juices, water, tea. Cola and various sodas in small cans. Hennessy cognac, Red Label whiskey, gin Beefeater, wine and other spirits. And you can ask for supplements. Moreover, you can call the flight attendant several times and ask them to bring you more whiskey, for example. Everything will be done with a smile. On one of the flights, a Russian guy sitting next to us even abused this somewhat, as a result of which he tasted rubbish. 🙂

Five hours of flight fly by like one. Have you already wanted to travel by air in Qatar? Then go ahead, book your tickets!

Hamad International Airport

Hamad International Airport in Doha, the capital of Qatar, is brand new - built in 2014. And everything in it is made for people, and, what is important, for different people. That is for every need. And we even felt sorry that both connections at this airport were very short for us - 55 minutes each.

All the amenities of this airport are very well described in the article “Doha International Airport (Qatar) - Hamad International Airport. Instructions for use ", so I send you there for detailed information.

For those who are too lazy to follow the link, in short: there are three huge buildings of passenger terminals. For free: rest rooms - Quiet Rooms (including separate ones for men and women) with sun loungers and soft flooring, toilets (for men, for women, and one more view - either for Bedouins, or for women in a veil), smoking rooms with armchairs and TV (this is in a Muslim country where it is a sin to smoke at all!), sockets in each column, TV zones with armchairs and tables, computer zones, works of art by contemporary authors with a worldwide reputation (the airport was designed and built in partnership with leading museums of the country), fountains with drinking water, Wi-Fi, rooms for families with children, playgrounds. For money: Oryx lounge areas ($40 per person) with beds, a buffet and even a pool, cafes and shops. Prices are high, because Qatar is not a poor country. Excursion. If you have a long connection at Hamad airport, you can go on a tour of the capital for free, you do not need to issue any visas, you will be accompanied by a guide. And at the end of such an excursion, you will also be brought to the market so that you can buy souvenirs in memory of Doha.

Great, isn't it? Personally, we were very sorry that we had short connections at Hamad airport and long ones at Domodedovo. It would be better the other way round...

We just managed to run twice through the terminals in search of our gate, so I present you with brief photo sketches of Hamad Airport.

The first time we arrived almost in the evening, the direct access to the terminals was closed, and everyone went to the general one. On customs control there were such queues that at first we were confused - it was not possible to get through in 50 minutes. But, as it turned out, you just need to show your orange ticket to the airport employee, and we were shown out of line.

Behind the magnificent panoramic windows, we, alas, could not really see anything. Whether it was fog, or a sandstorm, and then darkness suddenly descended ... Eh, we didn’t see the capital of Qatar even through the window, as well as through the windows on the plane.

The airport is really just huge. You go, you go in search of an exit to the gates, but the end-edge is not visible. Travelators are everywhere. If you're not in a hurry, you can just go, moving from one moving sidewalk to another.

However, we flew at a fast pace, afraid of not finding the gate in Colombo in time. Not forgetting, of course, to click the camera on the run. The glass train on the monorail forced them to stop and open their mouths. He approached absolutely silently!

Even the airport is transported by typewriter. Can you imagine the scale of the room if cars drive quietly in it?

And again in passing - soft plush dinosaurs ...

... and surprise with their unusualness. I want to go back to childhood and climb here. But no time.

Here is our gate, before departure there is time to go to the toilet.

Speaking of toilets. I'm talking about women, of course. The cleanliness is perfect. Shower-bidet. And… when, having done my business, I got up and started buttoning my trousers, behind me the toilet itself turned on the flush. I was so struck by this that I looked at him from all sides for a couple of minutes, trying to guess where his sensor was. 😀 But how convenient, you don't need to touch anything! Hygiene.

Having done our business, we go to check in for the flight. The process takes half a minute.

And now we are already on the plane, looking through the windows at the evening airport. It's a pity you can't see the Persian Gulf, because runways are right along it.

We saw Doha only in this version - in bright night lights, leaving in foggy darkness ...

On the way back, the connection at Hamad International Airport fell on the day. The exit to the terminals was open, so we saved some time by not going through customs. Therefore, again at a quick pace, we ran through the airport. Play areas again...

Shops, this time open…

Palm trees and the glass ceiling of the central hall, which we did not reach the first time.

The main symbol of Hamad airport is this warm lamp bear. Well, except for the fact that it's huge. It is made of bronze, weighs 17 tons and costs $6.5 million. As conceived by Swiss artist Urs Fischer, Lamp/Bear is designed to humanize airport space and remind us of home…

The bear makes a double impression. On the one hand - admiration for its vastness and such similarity to a real plush toy. On the other hand, he is strange, after all ... This lamp sticking right out of my head ... And I still wanted to touch it - is it really hard? But, alas, the fence makes it clear that you should not do this.

Here we are on the plane. Alas, the foggy haze still hangs over the city, so we can only see nearby buildings. The Persian Gulf is not visible again.

After takeoff, we guess the outlines of skyscrapers in the fog ... Oh, what a pity that we do not see them in all their glory! The camera does not capture them at all.

It is located in the capital of the state - Doha. It was built quite recently, in 2014. It is the base for the national airline Qatar Airways.
