History of Palanga

The first chronicle mentions of settlements on the territory of present-day Palanga date back to 1161. At the same time, archaeological research allowed scientists to establish that the first people at the foot of Mount Birutė appeared in the 3rd century BC. BC e. During the Middle Ages, there was already a vast settlement with its own market and chapel, which made it an important trade and religious point on the map of Lithuania. At the beginning of the 19th century, the village became a recognized seaside resort and residents from all over the country came here to relax.

The heyday of the resort and the city of Palanga began due to the influence of Count Tyszkiewicz, who had his own estate here. The Tyszkiewicz family became the owner of the village of Palanga in 1824 and remained so for more than 100 years, and in 1997 the current holder of the title of count was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Palanga for the first time in the history of the city. Assessing the location and prospects of Palanga as a seaside resort, the count began to invest in the expansion of the city. By his order, the first hotel was built, a restaurant and a theater appeared. In addition, the coast was equipped, on which special cabins appeared for separate bathing of men and women, and separate marble baths with bathtubs, into which warm water was supplied. Soon a coastal pier with a pier appeared, which became a favorite place for walks of all residents and guests of the city.

The son of the count continued the work of his father and embellished the city with the construction of a palace complex and a botanical garden in the English style. There were also villas for guests, hospitals, new baths and landscaping of the streets. The modern city of Palanga, thanks to the efforts of local residents and investors invested in it, has become an important cultural and resort center Lithuania, open all year round to receive guests.

botanical park

Palanga parks

Palanga Botanical Park is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea, covered with shade pine forest and sand dunes in the city of Palanga. Prior to its current name, the park was renamed several times. It was called the park Birutes, Tyshkeviciaus and Palanga. It was founded at the beginning of the twentieth century by the French architect Edouard Francois André.

In the center of the park immersed in greenery and flowers, the majestic palace of the counts Tyszkiewicz rises, which seemed to play its last ball just yesterday. It is worth noting that the count bought the future Palanga in 1824 and turned the gloomy wetland into a popular seaside resort, which eventually became known as the Baltic Baden-Baden. The count decorated the area around his residence in an exquisite style, the best gardeners looked after the garden, and there is a rose garden near the building.

One of the pearls of the park can be called a pond with swans. The line of the shore of the reservoir is thought up in such a way that looking at it the pond seems larger than it actually is. It is edged with black alder and spirea, which mysteriously hang over the curves of the reservoir, giving the impression of water movement.

Pine trees grow mainly in the park. Time and wind have bent their trunks into bizarre zigzags. The sun's rays breaking through the needles create an interesting play of chiaroscuro, which makes for beautiful photographs. Park meadows are covered with shrubs and trees from the wind, so it is cozy here even in the windiest weather.

Today, the territory of the park is about 100 hectares, of which half a hectare is occupied by flower beds, trees cover 60 hectares, and water bodies - more than a hectare.

In the evenings, park workers turn on the illumination, which sets you in a romantic mood and it seems that you have become the hero of a magical story.

Botanical Garden of Palanga

Botanical gardens of Palanga

Palanga Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved parks on the coast of Lithuania, located in the city of Palanga. The garden is a real work of art that cannot but delight. A vast territory, vibrant colors of nature, the communication of birds and trees, solitude and the absence of large crowds of people - what could be more pleasant for a great time.

The park was founded in 1897 by Count Feliks Tyszkiewicius. The author of the park project is the famous French landscape architect, botanist Edouard Francois Andre, who for three years led the creation of the park together with the Belgian gardener Buissen de Coulon. There is a unique palace in the park, the project of which was developed by the German architect Franz Schwechten, and the palace was built only in 1957 according to the drawings of the architect Alfredas Brusokas. In front of the palace is an impressive sculpture called "Blessing Christ". Now the palace houses the Amber Museum.

Nature and architecture are harmoniously connected, which is a tempting place for a family vacation or a romantic walk. The territory of the garden is very diverse: here you can walk along the paths, studying sculptures, you can sit on benches in the shade of trees, you can relax by the pond, admiring the birds, or you can find yourself in a real forest, where there is an amazing grotto of Lourdes.

In the Botanical Garden there is one ancient and iconic place- the hill of Biruta - a pagan priestess. Now on the site of the sanctuary stands the chapel of St. George. Next to the hill there is a sculpture “To you, Biruta”.

Walking through the botanical garden, you can go to the sea.

Climate features

In Palanga, there will be no acclimatization period for children, since the climate is as close as possible to the central part of our country, so sharp temperature and climatic jumps cannot be expected.

The Baltic climate, even at the height of summer, does not indulge in heat and high air temperatures, and even more so water. The daily temperature of summer here ranges from +17˚С…to +28˚С, reaching maximum levels in the last ten days of July and the first week of August.

Air temperature day and night

Most of the rainy days happen in the spring months and in August, September.

Number of sunny and rainy days

As for the water temperature, the situation here is as follows:

  • June: +12˚С.. +16˚С;
  • July: +16˚С.. +23˚С;
  • August: +18˚С.. +23˚С.

The warmest (and for the Baltic Sea it is + 23˚С) water is in late July - early August, and then very rarely.

Beach infrastructure

Of course, the most important entertainment in Palanga is the sea, sand and pine forests in the area.

The sea is not deep near the coastline, so you can not be afraid for the kids frolicking near the coast. You should be especially vigilant only when the sea is restless. But for older children and adults, the waves become exciting fun.

In addition to the sea air, walks in a pine forest will also have a beneficial effect on the health of the baby. All this is available to vacationers all year round and completely free of charge, so it is simply impossible not to use them.

Although, of course, there are also disadvantages. One of them is the wind, which often blows from the sea. Considering that even at the height of summer its temperature is not too high, blowing around the children who are not in a hurry to get out of the water, the breeze can give their mother enough excitement. Those who have been here more than once know that from the wind carrying small grains of sand and hitting the body, children can be hidden behind a small dune, and rare gusts that reach there will become one of the means of hardening. By the way, special tents that serve as a barrier from the wind also help to escape from the wind.

Some parents bring food to the beach with them, fresh fruits that can be purchased in tents at the entrance to the beach, inflatable pools and everything that their child may need. And on the beach itself there are small cafes and bars where you can buy drinks, ice cream, and some kind of light snack that does not require cooking.

Children from 1 to 5-7 years old will definitely like it here. But older children who need fun animation and a greater variety of entertainment may get bored.

What to see and visit

In the city you can look at these places:

  • not far from the sanatorium "Pusynas" there is a large entertainment area for children;
  • insectarium, where you can see more than 40 species of various arthropods. Admission for adults 3.5 €, children 3-10 years old - 2.5 €.
  • a singing fountain, however, a musical show runs from 21.00 to 21.45;
  • dog museum with over 2,000 dog figurines. Entrance adults 2, children 1 €.
  • the amber museum has a large collection of both amber itself and products made from it, and around there is a beautiful botanical park for shady walks.
  • theater of the witch Raganyuke, where you can not only watch the performance, but also participate in competitions and tests.

Around Palanga there is a little more entertainment for adults and children, so if you have the opportunity to leave, they are worth a visit:

  • Entertainment complex NVN. There are amusement parks, a museum and exhibition complex, labyrinths, a sculpture park, a small menagerie, an exhibition of cars. You can have a snack and relax in cafes, restaurants and bars on the territory of the complex.
  • Dinosaur Park. The uniqueness of this place lies in the fact that not just models of ancient and long-extinct dinosaurs are recreated here, but their activity is completely imitated: they growl, hiss, move and seem to see those who came to see them. Models are made in natural size. There are 40 of them on the territory of the Dinopark. There are also attractions, 5D cinema, a mirror maze, as well as playgrounds.
  • Museum of hunting trophies. There is not only an exposition of stuffed animals, but you can also go on a safari and see wolves, wild boars, bears, as well as ostriches and zebras.
  • The world of the Indians in Vinetu Kaimas. It will be fun for children and adults to become real Indians, participate in competitions, master classes and other fun.
  • Maritime Museum and Dolphinarium. Spend an unforgettable day here even with a ferry trip. The maritime museum presents anchors, propellers, ships, in addition to the mesmerizing performance of dolphins and fur seals, in the dolphinarium, there are many aquariums with fish and penguins.
  • Clock Museum. It is interesting to learn and show the children how changes took place in the world of time and clocks. Curious and adults will see some unique species.
  • A mini zoo can offer a look at representatives of cats, ungulates, primates, birds and even predators.

Things to do in low season

As a rule, in winter, both with children and without them, they go to Palanga for sanatorium treatment, since a beach holiday at this time of the year is simply impossible here. In most resorts focused on children's recreation, entertaining events for kids are held, as well as various competitions and sightseeing tours of Palanga and its surroundings.
Of course, in addition to sanatorium entertainment, I want to do something for my child during the holidays, but since winter is the time of the low season and the weather is rather cold outside, most entertainment complexes and playgrounds are closed.

Alternatively, you can visit the NVN. Of course, all the entertainment of the summer season will not work.

If your children are of middle and high school age, and also like to inspect something unusual and interesting, then you can go to sightseeing tour local museums: Antan Monchis Museum (16 S. Daukanto Street, Palanga), Amber Museum, Dog Museum.

You can visit the performance of the previously described Raganiukes Theater and participate in an interesting competition program from the witch Raganiuke.

It can also be quite exciting to walk along the embankment, along the pine forest and in the city, because in the low season the city practically dies out, so nothing will stop you and your children from enjoying its beauties, and maybe discovering something new and interesting for myself. Just make sure you warm up well, as it is windy and much colder on the seaside than in the city.

Where to eat

Children in a cafe

Palanga, of course, will not give you such a gift as all-inclusive meals, since there is simply no such thing in this resort, but still, despite the fact that you come to relax with children, you don’t have to worry about food issues costs. The infrastructure is very well developed here, and, taking into account the fact that the resort is focused specifically on families with children, most restaurants and cafes offer a children's menu.

You can find a suitable option for daily meals in any part of the resort, but still the most famous and expensive establishments are located in the center, namely on Basanavičius Street.

The most interesting establishments for good rest with kids:

Enjoying the excellent taste of freshly prepared dishes, you can also watch your kids at the same time.

Zuvine Restaurant

  • Address: Basanavičius st., 37A, Palanga.

This is one of the expensive restaurants offering a good fish menu. Here, as in most restaurants and cafes in Palanga, you will be offered high chairs for feeding, a children's menu, as well as the opportunity to send children to a small playground.

Brewery HBH "At Jozas"

  • Address: Žibininkai village, about 5 km from Palanga.

A great place to relax with the whole family: in addition to the restaurant itself, there is an excellent play area for children. Over time after the opening, the institution has expanded so much that now it does not have the status of a restaurant, but is considered a whole entertainment center. At Yozas you can not only have a delicious lunch, but also get a lot of new impressions for both adults and children.

Restaurant "Kogas"

  • Address: v. Juodkrantė, Juodkrantė ferry, Rezos street, 1.

Palanga is a rather tiny town with squat buildings. There is even a special law here prohibiting the construction of housing that would exceed the height of a pine forest. It looks cool - a complete fusion of natural and man-made. All the houses and hotels of Palanga stretch along the Baltic Sea, and the residential streets of the city are separated from the sea only by a strip of pine forest. We recommend choosing housing on the front page - so you can admire the peaceful forest from the window, and you can walk to the sea in a maximum of 5 minutes. Villa Medusa(Neringos g. 42) just one of those accommodations. A small guest house is located right next to the forest, which hides the sea. For € 35 per night for two, you can stay here in a cozy room with all amenities and floor-to-ceiling windows. Write to the hostess in advance that you want a room overlooking the forest, and in the morning, without getting out of bed, you can admire one of the most peaceful views in your life.

Modern Apartment in Palanga(S.neries g. 37)- apartments in the city center and, moreover, not far from the sea. For a day in a cozy apartment with good view You can spend almost € 100 from the window, but it has its own kitchen and an open balcony for breakfast.

Palanga Park Hotel(S. Dariaus ir S. Gireno 11) - a hotel with an excellent location for those who like to live closer to the traffic. It is located near the main street of the city - Basanavičius. In 10 minutes from the hotel you can walk to the main attractions of the town - the Amber Museum and the Botanical Garden. A double room in Palanga Park Hotel will cost about € 55 per day.

If you want to splurge - choose a boutique hotel Smilčių Vilos(Smilčių g. 67), which is located just 10 minutes walk from the sea. Several buildings included in the hotel complex are already remarkable in themselves - the buildings look very modern and designer. The hotel courtyard is also very cozy and ideal for evening gatherings. An overnight stay in a double room will cost € 90 (breakfast included).

Budget travelers also have a place to stumble. For example, in Surf Hostel(Medvalakio g. 12A)– a modern bright hostel with a cool “surfer” interior. Overnight in a shared room for eight will cost € 24 per person.

Another good hostel Symbiosis (Klaipėdos pl. 62a)– located near the bus station of Palanga. Here are cool cozy rooms with fresh renovation and new furniture. You will have to walk to the sea for about half an hour, but there is free parking next to the hostel. Prices are quite affordable: from €14 for an overnight stay in a shared room, and €30 for a double room.

Palanga is a small seaside town, where people go rather to take a break from impressions and oversaturated cultural program. But there are still sights here - and they all fit perfectly into the leisurely atmosphere hovering here.

The main museum in the city Amber Museum(Vytauto g. 17) is in ancient palace, which once belonged to Count Tyszkiewicz. The exposition of the museum fully corresponds to its name - there are about 30 thousand exhibits, and all this is amber. Rumor has it that this is the largest such collection in the world. The exposition with amber is located on the second floor of the palace, and on the first floor you can get a closer look at the life and way of life of the counts Tyszkiewicz themselves. The interiors of those times are recreated in the halls, and you can look, for example, into the countess's office or imagine yourself big man ceremonial hall. A ticket to the museum costs €3 for an adult and €1.5 for a child.

Adjacent to the Amber Museum is another major attraction that not only Palanga, but the whole of Lithuania is proud of - this Birute Park(Vytauto g. 15). Locals like to boast that this is the most beautiful and well-groomed park in the whole country - and they have every reason to do so. Once upon a time, the park was laid out by order of the same Counts Tyszkiewicz. In Birut even today you can feel like you are in the 19th century - there are well-groomed flower beds and bushes all around, and people dressed in costumes from the times of the first owners of the palace are walking along the paths. By the way, quite a lot of events are held in the park: for example, in the summer three times a week, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the Palanga orchestra performs here. You don't have to pay to visit the park.

Another popular place in the city for outdoor walks is sculpture park(Vytauto g. 39A). Here you can take a look at 28 statues of modern Lithuanian (and not only) sculptors.

If you come to Palanga with children, look into Dog Museum (Taikos g. 8). This is a private collection of figurines of dogs. As many as 4 thousand exhibits! One of the owners of the museum is the artist Vytautas Kusas, so you can see his paintings here.

Don't lose sight Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Vytauto g. 51), which rises above the city and looks very impressive. The imposing neo-Gothic red brick building was built in 1987 with the financial support of Count Felix Tyszkiewicz. Look inside to see the church's tall vaults and discreet decoration. But keep in mind that it is not always possible to get there - check first with the hours of services on the church website. By the way, in Palanga there is an Orthodox Church of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God (Sodų g. 52), which is worth a look because of its atypical architecture for Orthodox churches.

On the main street of the city - Basanaviciaus(J. Basanaviciaus) your feet will take you. This is the most moving part of Palanga, and it is along this street that almost all the cafes, restaurants and bars of the city are located. People are always decent here, because Basanavičiaus is actually the center of Palanga and its oldest part. Along the street, among others, are the very first buildings built in the city. These are wooden holiday villas, not the most attractive in appearance, but protected by the state as a cultural property.

Directly from Basanavičiaus you will go to another main attraction of Palanga - the sea pier. The very first pier was built here under the Tyshkeviches - they hoped to develop shipping in Palanga, but it did not work out. Therefore, the pier began to be used for idle walks. Later, in our time, a new, more reliable structure was built here. Come to the pier to admire such a beautiful and such a cold Baltic Sea, listen to the cries of seagulls and look at the sandy shore from afar.

ACTIVITIES

The Baltic city is adored by lovers of healthy lifestyles and outdoor activities: there will always be someone riding a bike, jogging or walking Nordic walking past you. And if you are far from all this, perhaps it is in Palanga that you will be inspired to run your first hundred meters along the sea.

The favorite of all local and visiting cyclists is the Palanga long bike path. On it you can get right up to the Latvian Liepaja or to neighboring Klaipeda. It passes through the forest along the sea, as well as some of the sights of Palanga, for example, the Amber Museum. Bicycles can be rented - here are the checkpoint addresses of points.

If you prefer not to pedal, but to run on your own two feet, you will appreciate treadmill "Labritis" in the thick of the Palanga pine forest. The length of the looped path is 6 kilometers. Here you can work out on the street simulators.

IN Palanga sports complex (Sporto g. 3) You can sip iron in the gym or play tennis. Next to the brand new building of the complex there is a football stadium and running tracks.

If you are traveling with children, we advise you to look into Palanga summer park (J. Basanaviciaus g. 43) with slides, trampolines and other fun (tickets from € 17), Palanga Fairy Park (S. Daukanto g. 24A) with unusual sculptures and installations and children's park (Šermukšnių g. 1) with great playgrounds.

At the same time, a palace was built around the park.

The project of the park was developed by the landscape architect, botanist, known for his work not only in France, but also in other countries, Edouard Francois André (1840-1911). With his son Rene Edouard André (1867-1942) and the Belgian gardener Buissen de Coulomb, he lived in Palanga for three summer season. All this time, under their leadership, the park was broken.

Among ordinary pines, the Belgian dendrologist B. de Coulomb planted thousands of plants brought from everywhere. But not everyone was able to endure the local winters. Walking in the park, be sure to climb the sacrificial hill of the Lithuanians - Mount Birutė. This is the most high point on the coast of Palanga. She is listed on big maps dating back to the 17th century. In the old days, the Lithuanians kept the sacred fire on the top of the hill. It was guarded by the priestess Birute. The wife of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Kestutis and the mother of the Grand Duke Vitaus, Birute lived in Palanga until her death and served the ancient pagan gods. In 1989 during archaeological sites a pagan temple was found on the mountain.

Pier

At the end of the 19th century, transport links to Palanga had not yet been established. Vacationers first went to Liepaja or Klaipeda. Then they got on horseback. With the assistance of Count Tyszkiewicius, a pier was built (1884-1888). From Liepaja to Palanga, the merchant-passenger ship "Phoenix" was running. In addition to vacationers, he also delivered food and a variety of goods. During storms, the pier was covered with sand and in the end it was completely disabled. Since 1982, the pier has been a favorite place for walking. However, time and the vagaries of nature destroyed this structure completely. Therefore, in 1997, the 470-meter-long pier was rebuilt.

Folk craftsmen made pagan gods from wooden pillars. According to the mythology of the Balts, each pillar corresponds to a certain god. In 1998, these god pillars were installed in a certain order. At one time, the pagans, at sunset, depending on the location of the shadow from the pillar, determined calendar holidays: Kaledos (Christmas), Uzhgavenes (Shrovetide), Rasos (Rossy), Gandro (Aist) day and others.

Ciurlionis.

This is an indicator that in the only port city in Lithuania, the demand for water tourism exceeds the offer. For 3 months, about 10 thousand people became the lucky ones of new entertainment.

In the coming season, thanks to significant improvements in cruise conditions, a further increase in passenger traffic is expected. Vacationers on the ship "Mecklenburg" will take home not only a good mood, but also impressive memories.

As if in a good picture, you will see a calm coastline around the bay, circling flocks of birds, dead dunes stretching for 9 kilometers, old lighthouses. On the background azure sea you will see fishermen pulling nets from the water with a rich catch.

Without violating the established tradition, the ship in Yodkrante moored to the shore for a short time. If you wish, you can end your tour here. The rest of the passengers continue along the route to Nida, where the ship lands on the shore for a longer time. Passengers have at their disposal about 2 hours, during which they can visit the sights and take a walk on the seashore.

Thanks to such unique conditions created on a cruise ship, tourists have a tradition of celebrating their birthdays and other significant dates of their lives while traveling.
