Since the Czech Republic is a Catholic country, Christmas comes to Prague a little earlier than to Orthodox Russia. The Czechs celebrate the Christian holiday on the night of December 24-25 in a warm family circle, at a large table laden with all kinds of dishes.
No matter how surprising it may sound, but the celebration of Christmas in Prague begins long before December 24th. On the night of December 5-6, the children are visited, no, not by Santa Claus and not by Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden, but by Czech folk characters - Mikulas and Hedgehogs.
Outwardly, Mikulash is very similar to our "native" Grandfather Frost, but behind him is not a bag, but a box with gifts. Mikulash's faithful companions are a bright angel and a furry mischievous imp. The angel carries with him a list with the names of children who have behaved well throughout the year, and the imp, respectively, has a list with the names of pranksters.
But the modest Hedgehog prefers to remain in the shadows. Unnoticed by anyone, he secretly throws gifts to obedient children. You can only guess about the presence of the Hedgehog - it is betrayed by the melodic and gentle ringing of the bell.
On December 6, the celebration continues. Dressed-up Christmas characters walk solemnly through the streets of the city and amuse children and passers-by with questions about good behavior and treat everyone who was obedient with sweets.
Within two weeks, all the inhabitants of Prague are embraced by the spirit of magic and fairy tales. On the Old Town Square main square Prague - the Christmas market opens and, from that moment, the entire Czech capital is immersed in special atmosphere fast approaching holiday. In almost all squares, you can find the main attribute of the New Year - a fluffy elegant Christmas tree. Christmas compositions depicting a holy action - the birth of Jesus Christ are installed everywhere.
New Year 2018 in Prague
New Year's Eve can be called the "icing on the cake" of the perfect winter holidays in Prague. If Prague Christmas is a truly family holiday, then on the New Year, which is called Sylvester here, they try to celebrate noisily, provocatively and often outside the home.
The real and special decoration of the festival is the obligatory snow that falls every year on New Year's Eve and on Generous Evening. Probably, the people of Prague are rewarded for the fact that they treat their holiday traditions so sacredly and carefully.
