We lived there for six years, but there was not a day when we would not remember the ocean and the fresh summer breeze. Holidays were spent, as a rule, in Europe. The desire to change everything intensified upon returning to Russia: as soon as you get off the ladder, your mood drops. In addition, we wanted more adventure in life.
Galloping across the USA
The husband decided: to walk like that, and went to the USA. There he spent six months trying to find his Palestine. So he entered the image of the discoverer that he did not linger anywhere for a long time, could not find perfect place for a family nest. According to his descriptions, New York came out as an even noisier copy of Moscow, in Washington the level of crime alerted, in the picturesque Maryland it was boring, in the festive Miami it was stuffy, in Minneapolis it was cold.
In Chicago, he was almost shot by stoned black guys, sincerely indignant that they were overtaken on the road by a "white punk". I liked Boston and Denver, but they have cold winters. Missing in Los Angeles fresh air and the starry sky, and in San Francisco and Seattle - the warm sea.
Having squandered the United States far and wide, getting rid of a solid share of family savings and a few pairs of rose-colored glasses, he woefully shared with me over the phone, if not invaluable, then very expensive conclusion: "The country is big, but there is nowhere to live."

But in Moscow, his bronze tan and illusions quickly faded away. Everything turned out to be much more difficult. To organize everything properly, we needed money, lawyers and more money. Our "let's go" turned into whole year fees and expectations.
Russian friends and acquaintances did not understand our zeal: “Why do you need this? Go to Machu Picchu, to Greece, to Alaska in the end, if you really want adventure. But do not move to the island forever. Start everything from scratch! What will you do? Now it's fine here."
One year later
But we did it anyway. We moved. I can quote the words of one of the taxi drivers who met us literally at the door of the airport and immediately carried us away with a conversation, but here they like to chat:
“Hawaii is not America. And we have our own queen, and there are an order of magnitude fewer crimes, weapons are prohibited, and there are almost no murders. We are against wars and conflicts, we believe that each country should develop as its people want. And so glad to see everyone here. At first, we decided to take on the most obvious - tourism. True, every third person from Russian-speaking countries works here in this industry.
Having received a license (in Hawaii it is much easier than in other US states), they got down to business. Website, mailings, marketing, calls to agencies in the USA and Russia. The process of sending letters seemed endless to us.
We learned
Firstly, in the USA there is everything, and even with a surplus. If you come here with a brilliant idea, you will quickly feel like the fifth spoke in a chariot. Five or ten other enthusiasts like you, who can do a little bit of everything, will breathe down your neck.
Realizing this, my husband and I began to study tourism business. For about a month he wandered around all the islands in search of exotic, reserved places away from the conventional tourist routes. Spent a week with shamans on big island and Kauai. Local stories, myths, legends made a great impression on him.
We have our first clients. My husband gradually left the travel agency on me, and he himself took up real estate. In principle, a standard set for immigrants.
Secondly, everything must be done as it should be. If you broke the law or accepted rules, very soon it will turn against you. Even if you just like to listen to loud music after 10 pm.

"There is no need to hurry and no need to strain"
Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii, a worldwide resort, but the city has a metropolitan feel. Especially when leaving the freeway during peak hours.
Hawaiians are said to be lazy, all they need is fishing, a ukulele guitar and pacalola (hemp) herb, which is popular here. But they are hospitable and generous, family and kind, despite the very ferocious appearance and solid dimensions.
I would say that locals not lazy, but leisurely, never rushing anywhere, enjoying every minute of life in paradise. People try not to dwell on the negative. And if at first we rushed around the island and the streets in Moscow style, always being late and nervous somewhere, then over time I realized that there was no need to rush and no need to strain.
Hawaiians live in large and friendly families. On the beach, having heard an accent, they are interested in where you are from, and having learned that you are from Russia, they immediately invite you to the table: “Bra, pliz join ace!” (“Brother, please join!”)

This is not surprising: they strive here successful people from all over the planet, because here is the cleanest water and air, comfort and benefits of civilization, an ideal climate and the charms of a tropical island. Everything in my life came together like a puzzle. My childhood dream of moving to the United States for permanent residence has come true. At 38, I was able to move to the US and later to Hawaii. This year will be 11 years since I emigrated, and 5 years since I received American citizenship.
How I went to live in America: the beginning of the journey
The last government project to provide asylum in the US to the persecuted Protestants and Baptists of the USSR was coming to an end. By this time, my grandmother, my uncle and his family were living in the States, and my father and stepmother were applying for a visa.
The likelihood of obtaining a visa was minimal. For example, the father was refused again, because the embassy took his marriage as fictitious (the wife was 18 years younger).
I had problems with work and housing in my homeland. However, at the interview everything went like clockwork and I answered all the questions.
After some time, I was informed that I can draw up documents. Joy knew no bounds, but funds, of course, were not enough. I borrowed $700 from my grandmother (she received a decent pension in the States by our standards) and started preparing for the move. Uncle from across the ocean led the process.
When the day of departure came, my older brother accompanied me to Borispol. We knew that this might be the last time we saw each other.
The plane flew through Munich and 12 hours of flight and landing in the USA flew by unnoticed.
My uncle met me in Washington. He had a great car, we quickly drove to California, Sacramento, where my relatives lived. But most importantly, a large Russian-speaking dynasty of immigrants from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine settled there.
I counted on their help, because in Sacramento, where I was going to live, I did not have my own housing. And the settlers were offered only budget places in hotels or social housing.
My family met me at the airport and helped me settle in Sacramento.
Life in America: from the airport to work
At first, my uncle took me in. On my second day in Sacramento, I found a job. Unskilled, related to construction, but work - $ 10 per hour (there are simply no other downward rates in America).
Life took its course. Soon I entered into a civil marriage and moved to Marina (that was the name of my civil wife, a parishioner of the church and a widow with many children).
It is very easy to find a job in places where the Russian-speaking population is concentrated. Entire construction teams and companies work there. If you are not a quitter and not a lazy person, it is easy to get a job there, and most importantly, to get a decent salary.
Each Protestant family (I talked in most cases with parishioners of the local church) had 2-3 cars, and in Ukraine such models cost from 30 thousand dollars. Here - no more than 3 thousand dollars. There was something to strive for.
About a month after my arrival, I saw a decent Mercedes on the side of the road, with the inscription "Sale" on the windshield and the price - $ 300. I had accumulated such an amount and I became the owner of the car that I had dreamed of all my life.
Already on the second day of my life in the USA, I got a job and received $ 10 an hour.
Obtaining American Citizenship
So 5 years have passed. Every Wednesday and Sunday I went to church services, and one day the pastor offered me a conversation.
Then he invited me to participate in several programs to teach English and "US history". Without decent progress in these areas, it would be more difficult to pass the exam and become an American citizen.
Of course, I enthusiastically set to work. Along the way, I completed all the necessary formalities, submitted documents to obtain citizenship.
In addition to knowing English and the history of the country, I worked and had housing (according to the laws, a common-law husband was considered to have housing if he lived with his wife in the same house for more than a year).
All this was taken into account admission committee and examiners. I received coveted citizenship.
After studying in English and the history of the United States I received American citizenship.
Help from the Russian-speaking community
However, not everything was so smooth in my life in America.
Once there was a misfortune. Marina had adult children. One winter, during the Christmas holidays, in one of local cafes there was a showdown between the two companies of young people. As a result of a quarrel, there was a fight, and then a shootout. An eighteen-year-old boy was shot dead.
Marina was very upset by the death of her son. Once, after long prayers, she came to me and said: “It was God who punished me for living with you in a civil marriage. I decided that it was impossible to pray for such a sin. But I'll try to save my soul. We should split up".
It was a huge blow, for a long time I could not come to my senses, find solace. For two years I wandered around shelters, friends, social organizations providing temporary housing. All this time I went to church every day.
Sacramento - Big city. But the diaspora is quite compact. Many people live for 10-20 years in the States. By that time I had already lived for more than 6 years. I was not left alone with the misfortune. Someone supervised my stay here all the time.
One day, after another sermon, the pastor met with me again. We talked for a long time, I felt that I had an incentive to live again. I made a call to America for my daughter and a year later she came to Sacramento.
In the same year, I met my fate - Paradise, we signed and got married. They all began to live together - me, my daughter and Raechka.
Not everything went smoothly at first, but I found the strength to endure adversity, invited my daughter to my place, met a wonderful woman.
A little time passed and my father died in my homeland, in Ukraine. My brother sent me a part of my inheritance six months later - 5500 dollars.
By chance, in the same church, I met a realtor who sells land, including in Hawaii (this is the 50th state of the USA).
We have already vacationed in Hawaii 2 times as a family, and I perfectly understood what kind of place it was and how good it was there. We talked, he said, it was possible to find a plot there at such a price.
We started making a deal right after we flew to Hawaii, to the area of that part of the island where inexpensive plots were being sold. I chose a place that I really liked. It is on a mountain and the blue ocean is clearly visible from it.
I immediately imagined my house "with a view of the sea." “Yes, this is what I need!” I thought.
Your home in America
Why did I want my house? For several reasons.
- First, I really want my brother to come to live with me.

Little by little, in the yard of our house, another house began to grow in the form of building materials. I realized that I could go to the islands, to my land, which I had already bought by that time.
Moving to a fairy tale
Raya could not fly with me, she worked at the post office. By that time, her daughter had settled in New York, she studied at the university.
I flew to Hawaii alone. Work was also found instantly on the island. While I was getting used to it, a container arrived (shipping all the building materials cost $300). Boiled work.
And here we found friends and helpers, just like in Sacramento, because our Church worked successfully here too. Today the house is 85% ready. There is a generator solar panels, for water I go to " big land» to the village.

I bet you and I have little chance of ever getting to Niihau, because it is unlikely that one of the one hundred and thirty natives is mine or your relative!
2. Kauai is the fourth largest in the entire archipelago, but this is not its main feature. Approximately in the center of the island is Mount Waialeale. The eastern slope of this mountain is one of the wettest places on the planet, and it once rained non-stop here for 247 days! Thanks to such robust watering, Kauai is replete with vegetation, and it is not for nothing that it was dubbed the "island of gardens." Unlike neighboring Niihau, Kauai is home to a much larger number of people - 67,091 as of 2010, and it is quite possible to get on it. According to many people, including my Hawaiian friends, the island of Kauai is the most picturesque, colorful interesting place which is definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately, your humble servant has not yet been to the island of Kauai, but as soon as I visit, I will immediately write about my impressions!
3. Oahu (Oahu) - the island on which I lived for ten months from August 2003 to June 2004. Oahu will forever remain in my heart as the most vivid memory of my childhood and youth. I have read several unflattering travel reports about Oahu, in which travelers are advised not to linger on the island, saying that this is a huge metropolis, rolled up in asphalt, and all the beauty of Hawaiian nature is lost behind the gloss of expensive skyscrapers. Yes, I agree that there are almost 1 million people living on Oahu, which is about three times the population of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined. In addition, Oahu is the most popular island among tourists in the archipelago - it is visited by about 5 million people annually - of course, this is a lot. But if you look from the other side: 2.5 million tourists fly to Maui, 1.7 million to the Big Island, 1.4 million to Kauai ... - This is also a lot! The fact that Oahu is the center island has its advantages. Firstly, gasoline, food and other goods are cheaper on Oahu than on other islands, and it is more suitable for life and long stay. Second, on Oahu large quantity hotels, museums, shopping malls, entertainment centers, there is a huge sports arena - Aloha Stadium, more possibilities to be treated, to have a rest culturally and to get acquainted with people. And if you feel the urge to hide away from the eyes of people, then you do not have to crowd on the beaches of Honolulu. About 75% of the population is concentrated in the capital, so you should not judge Oahu by the first impression. Except worldwide famous beach Waikiki Beach, nearby Diamond Head, and the Pearl Harbor Museum have much less beaten paths. I thought, obviously, that something must be wrong with this island! But no, on Molokai everything is full of chocolate! Untouched nature, deserted beaches and main city, in which there is not a single traffic light and not a single building is taller than a coconut tree. There are also few hotels on the island, which explains the small number of tourists. Life on the island is very slow, and guests of this wonderful place have everything at their disposal to feel like on the edge of the planet in a real paradise. If I have such a chance, I will definitely plunge into the nirvana of the island of Molokai - they say it's worth it!
5. Lanai - the smallest of the Hawaiian Islands, which can be accessed by anyone. Only 3,102 inhabitants live in its open spaces permanently, and Lanai is also known as "-pineapple island" - as it was previously known for the world's largest pineapple plantation. Today, on the island of Lanai, as well as on Molokai, there are no traffic lights, no traffic jams, no skyscrapers. However, his story is unique in its own way. Surely you have seen the Dole badge on the pineapple and banana boxes in our stores? The founder of this fruit corporation was called James Dole, and in 1922 he acquired the island of Lanai, setting up the already mentioned world-famous plantation on it. In 1985, the island passed into the possession of billionaire David Murdock, as he acquired the corporation, which at that time included Dole. And more recently, in June 2012, another billionaire, Larry Ellison, bought 98% of the island from Murdoch. No one knows how much money Ellison Murdoch paid off, but according to the local newspaper Maui News, it is between $500 and $600 million dollars. The island of Hawaii is the most big island on the map of the United States of America. In everyday life, it is called "-the Big Island" - so that there is no confusion, because the state is called exactly the same as the island officially. It is difficult to blame the Hawaiians for this confusion, because the Hawaiian language has only 12 letters: 5 vowels and 7 consonants. In general, I'm surprised how, with so many letters, it was possible to come up with a whole language! It was on the Big Island that the aborigines killed and did not eat Captain Cook. Surprisingly, before visiting the Big Island, I was sure that, firstly, the Papuans killed Cook, and secondly, they not only killed him - they ate him. It turned out that this is absolutely not true, at least that's what Hawaiian historians say. What I personally remember on the Big Island is the abundance of greenery, beautiful parks, extensive golf courses, jungle with suspension bridge, narrow paths, a gorgeous waterfall and very good weather! However, the weather in the tropics is almost always good, including on Oahu - for me it was just perfect! +30 almost all year round, there is little rain, the water in the sea is about +24 - the most buzz! It’s a pity that I was on the Big Island for only a couple of days, and we didn’t manage to see much - objectively, for such a huge piece of land, more time is needed to appreciate all the charms of the local color.

Undoubtedly, Hawaii deserves the attention of travelers, and although getting from our lands to the Hawaiian Islands is far and expensive, the game is worth the candle.
