It is in Verkhovyna that you can still hear the real Hutsul dialect and admire the authentic Hutsul region. At the entrance to the village you will meet the inscription: "Zhabiye is the capital of the Hutsul region." So until 1962 Verkhovyna was called. Mykhailo Kotsiubinsky, Vasily Stefanyk, Lesya Ukrainka, Olga Kobylyanska, Osip Makovey, Marko Cheremshina, Ignat Khotkevich have also repeatedly come here. I visited Zhabye and K. Stanislavsky together with the actors of the Moscow Art Theater.

Historical information of Verkhovyna

The year of the first written mention of Verkhovyna is 1424. Previously, Zhabye was divided into Zhabye-Iltsy and Zhabye-Slupeyka. There were also many farms here: Volovaya, Krasny Lug, Krivopol, Vipche, Khodak, Zamagura. In different periods, such villages as Dzembronya, Bystrets, Topilche, Zelenoe, Burkut, Yavornik belonged to the administrative unit of Zhabye.

After the first partition of Poland between Russia, Prussia and Austria in 1772, the territories of modern Verkhovyna became part of Austria. Property stratification, national oppression, as well as significant exploitation of the inhabitants of mountain villages caused mass discontent among the peasants. The spontaneous protest of the population was reflected in such a form of struggle as the Oprishkov movement. Many highlanders then went to the detachments of Oleksa Dovbush, Ivan Pysklivy, Grigor Pinta, Ivan Boychuk, Vasily Bayurak. Also in the first half of the 19th century affected by activities in Zhabye and nearby villages of the rebels under the control of Myron Shtolyuk. Vecha was convened en masse - it was new form freedom movement at the end of the 19th century.

When did the first World War, in Zhabye and nearby villages, fighting continued between the Russians and the Austrians. Many Hutsuls fought in the Austrian army, especially many in the legion of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen.

April 1920 was marked by a peasant uprising, which was called the "Hutsul uprising". It was suppressed by the Polish authorities, and a memorial sign was built for the participants.

Verkhovyna was part of Poland from 1921 to 1939, and since 1962 Zhabye was renamed Verkhovyna.

Today Verkhovyna is administrative center Verkhovinsky district and Verkhovinsky district council. The settlement is located on the banks of the Black Cheremosh (the main water artery of the region, one of the main centers water tourism Ukraine), at an altitude of about 620 m above sea level. The distance to Ivano-Frankivsk is 150 km, to Vorokhtyanskaya railway station- 31 km.

Verkhovyna region is considered to be the edge original culture and great hospitality. Moreover, it is environmentally clean area. However, the generous Verkhovyna is not only for picturesque landscapes, but also for true Carpathian wonders.

Miracle first. Museum of History and Local Lore of Hutsulshchyna

It was first opened on February 18, 1939 in Zhabye-Iltsy, worked until 1939. Thanks to the support of the Zhabyevsky headman, ethnographer Peter Shekerik-Donikovy. The second time it was opened in 2004, and in 2007 it became a branch of the regional local history museum. Today the museum offers tourists to see two exposition and three exhibition halls. The pride of the museum is a pair of dolls in a detailed traditional dress of the bride. These exhibits were donated by the Yaselsky family, natives of Zhabye, who, after the Second World War, were driven to London by hard fate. The museum fund can boast of a fragment of a meteorite found in the Bystrets River, church books for registering newborns in the 18th-19th centuries, periodicals printed in the real Hutsul dialect, a bartka from the Dovbush era ... In total, the museum has collected more than a thousand exhibits and the fund is constantly replenished.

It should be noted that the Hutsulshchyna Museum is interesting not only for its generous collection of finds, because it is not just another collection of objects cultural heritage. Since the beginning of the opening (February 1939), scientists have carried out repeated astronomical studies on the basis of the museum, so it served as a research base for the Eastern Carpathians and the Hutsul region.

Miracle second. Museum of Hutsul life, ethnography and musical instruments of Roman Kumlyk

It is owned by the Kumlik family, because the founder of the museum has died. The highlight of the museum is a large collection of Hutsul musical instruments, which you can not only admire, but also listen to their sound (dugout violins made of whole piece tree and trembita, which is a symbol of the Hutsulshchyna and all the Carpathians). In addition, any excursion here is a real show, where you can listen to many stories from the life of the Hutsuls, as well as authentic ditties and songs.

Third miracle. House-museum of the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors"

The museum was opened in 2000 in the house where Sergey Parajanov, director of the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, lived and worked for seven months. Other members of the creative film team also visited here: artist Georgy Yakutovich, cameraman Yuri Ilyenko, actors Ivan Mikolaichuk and Larisa Kadochnikova. Museum visitors are offered to watch the film and find out the history of its creation, to get acquainted with museum exposition, which consists of things related to the movie. special attention deserves Google - a wedding cloth suite, which was dressed in the hero of Ivan Mykolaichuk, Ivan. The museum also contains authentic Hutsul clothing and household items.

Fourth miracle. home-citizen

Located in the village of Zarechye (Zhabyevsky Potok). It was here that the feature film "Annushka" was filmed. Grazhda is considered a historical and architectural monument.

Fifth miracle. Written Stone

True legend in stone. It is located near the village of Bukovets. It is an accumulation of stone blocks 100 m long and about 10 m high. Its outlines are somewhat similar to a cut pyramid. Until now, petroglyphs carved on stone (the Hutsuls call them “revash”) have survived - various crosses, circles, rhombuses, figures of people, which, according to B. Tomenchuk, an archaeologist and associate professor at the Carpathian University, can date back to the pagan era and the period of early Christianity. In addition to these mysterious messages from our ancestors, on the rock you can find the inscriptions “Oh. Kobylyanska 1899", "V. Stefanik 1899". Researchers claim that Ivan Franko, Osip Makovei, Mikhail Kotsyubinsky also climbed here.

There is an assumption that this is an ancient sanctuary, as indicated by nine rounded depressions in the stone at the top. Between the bowls there are more than thirty symbolic rock paintings. Therefore, the rock is considered a cult place, and the writing on it is a confirmation of the legend about the source of powerful power that lies dormant under the stones.

Miracle six. Lake Maricheika

High Mountain Lake Carpathians, located in the Chernogorsk massif, within the Verkhovinsky district, at an altitude of 1510 m above sea level. The length of this lake is 88 m, and the width is 45 m. The shape of the lake is elongated, and the banks are low, covered with sedge, around - spruce and pine forests.

There is a legend that this lake was formed from the tears of a shepherd who bitterly yearned for his beloved Maricheyka, weeping the whole lake. However, the water in the reservoir is cold, clean and fresh.
Usually they arrange for Maricheika day hike or an overnight trip.

Miracle seven. "White Carpathian Elephant" - an observatory on Mount Pop Ivan

This is an old Polish astronomical and meteorological station on Mt. Pop-Ivan (2028 m) was built by the University of Warsaw. It consisted of 43 rooms and was opened in 1938. The observatory was considered an architectural miracle - it was built at a height of more than two kilometers, tens of kilometers away from the nearest settlements, a real castle two floors on the east side and five floors on the west side. The building had a rotunda tower with a spiral staircase, a copper dome that opened automatically (this dome was delivered to the mountain in parts, each of which weighed more than 950 kg). The thickness of the walls of the basement floor exceeded a meter. The Poles called the building the "White Elephant" - in 30-degree frost it was completely covered with a layer of snow and ice, resembling a giant strange elephant.

Today, tourists can only admire the powerful walls of the observatory-fortress, although you can still see the remains of parquet and heat pipes. In 2011, a project for the restoration of the observatory was developed, and in 2012, the first repair work was carried out - the windows of the first floor were walled up and about 200 sq. m. were covered. roofs.

Miracle Eight. Sanctuary of Dovbushevy Komory

As close as possible to the village of Verkhovyna mountain range Tits. It is also surrounded by settlements like Krivorovnya, Verkhniy Yasenev and Krasnoilye. The highest peak of this massif is located at an altitude of 1186 m above sea level and has a rounded top with small stone cliffs, for which the people called the Dovbushevy Church. To the north-west of Sinitsa there is a slightly flattened mountain Dovbushanka, 1100 meters high above sea level. At the bottom of the Dovbushan Gorge is the Dovbushan Komory cave, which once served as a pagan rock-cave sanctuary, and during the time of the rebels was a winter refuge for Dovbush.

In 1958-59. Kyiv film studio Oleksandra Dovzhenko conducted the filming of the film Oleksa Dovbush in the Verkhovyna region. One of the most important episodes of the transition-test through a narrow wooden masonry, turned over the abyss between the rocks, was filmed in Dovbushe Komory.

It should be noted that the city of Dovbushanka with Dovbushevy Komorami is the most accessible and safe for tourists in summer, because in winter the gorge and rocks are covered with snow and ice and are very dangerous for any hiking trips.

Do not forget also that in addition to the presence of interesting and colorful locations, Verkhovyna also attracts tourists as a ski resort, here on the slopes of Pushkar and Zapidki there are two lifts. The first of them is located on the territory of the recreational complex "Verkhovyna", has a length of 380 m. A narrow slope and a drag lift are a great opportunity for beginner skiers to train. The second slope is 700 m long, has three runs and is suitable for more experienced skiers.

In addition, a camp and a rafting school are fully functioning in Verkhovyna. This allows everyone to go kayaking, rafting and kayaking.

As you can see, the wonders of Verkhovyna region are a great opportunity to popularize active recreation in the Carpathians and make a healthy lifestyle fashionable.

Verkhovyna, what is interesting to see

Verkhovyna is rich in architectural monuments, covered with ancient legends and beautiful scenery. Once in Verkhovyna, we recommend visiting the local history museum of the Hutsul region.

Hutsul Museum

The exposition of the museum is presented quite worthy: a variety of archaeological finds, including ancient household items, traditional embroidery and clothing of the Hutsuls, paintings, wooden and clay products, books, etc. Art objects are also diverse: towels and napkins with fancy embroidery, caskets wood and birch bark, wicker baskets, vases and much more.

Museum of Hutsul magic

Since there was no long time in the mountains official medicine, people were saved here by herbs and magic.

Therefore, molfars, gaderks and those who heal with prayers and speeches still live in the Carpathians. To tell more about the Hutsul magic, they opened in Verkhovyna unique museum. Among its expositions are the personal belongings of the molfar Nechay. Even those with which he dispersed the clouds.

Museum of the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors"

Not far from Verkhovyna, you can visit the places where the filming of the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" took place. Extras in this film were locals, and it is thanks to them that the films turned out to be natural and colorful.

The museum was opened in 2000 in a Hutsul hut. The director of the film, S. Parajanov, lived in this very hut during the filming. The director himself wanted to live here. He admitted that in this way he managed to better feel the color of the Hutsul region, learn about traditions and feed on the power of nature.

House museum of the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors", where Parajanov used to live

Museum workers are so in love with their work and their land that their tour gives you goosebumps. Visitors are given the opportunity to watch the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" and learn about the history of its creation. Then you can take a closer look at all the proposed expositions.

IN Old times there was a pagan temple in this place, and since then on the rocks you can see carved images that have remained from our ancestors. Signs of a pagan temple are nine bowls - round recesses that are carved in stone (the same ones are on the Sokolsky rocks in the Kosovo region) . On the inner walls of individual recesses, there are distinct traces of gouging with some kind of sharp object. The bottom of some of them has signs of burnt stone. Between the "cups" and around them are symbolic cave drawings- petroglyphs, which
still cannot decipher, there are more than thirty of them. It is thanks to the numerous drawings (petroglyphs) and inscriptions carved on its surface that this mountain got its name. By the way, the ancient symbols that are guessed in the images on the surface of the mountain can also be seen in modern Hutsul ornaments.

Maricheyka is a charming mountain lake, protected from all sides by a dense forest of smerekov. According to legend, the lake is filled with the tears of the shepherd Ivan, whose bride was killed by enemies - the girl Marichka was going to the groom in the mountains when she saw: enemies were approaching the village from behind the pass. She persuaded the young man to run to his relatives in order to warn the defenseless of the danger, and she herself undertook to lead the enemy army away along the Carpathian paths. The villagers escaped the attack, and Marichka paid for their well-being with her life.

The legend is often retold with a different ending: the mountains shook from the brutal murder, the Carpathian land trembled, lightning flashed, stones flew on the heads of the invaders, and under the weight of retribution a gorge opened up, a terrible bad weather did not end until all the villains were buried under the stones, but their remains are not drowned at the bottom of a mountain lake

Since that time, the lake began to be called Maricheyka, and the forest around it - Maiden's.

Unlike romantic legends, dry emotion science has established that the lake owes its origin to ice age, which is why it is so high and filled with fresh clean water. The depth in Maricheika is 0.8 meters, although you cannot call it small: Maricheika is 88 meters long and 45 meters wide. It is located at an altitude of 1510 meters above sea level.

After Maricheyka, you can climb Mount Pop Ivan, whose height exceeds 2000 meters. Research shows that from ancient times people climbed this mountain from the lowlands on the pagan holiday of Ivan Kupala, lit a grandiose bonfire at the top - Living Fire.

At its very top there is an abandoned observatory. By our time, only walls remained from it, but they are also impressive, their thickness reaches one and a half meters to protect themselves from hurricane winds that are at the top.

In 1936, the Ministry of the Polish Air Force laid the foundation stone on Mount Pop Ivan (we remind you that this territory was not part of Ukraine until 1939). equipment - from all over the world! Mostly Hutsuls were hired for construction work

The observatory had water supply. The building had a heating system - for this, a boiler room was equipped in the technical rooms. It must be taken into account that in winter there is a multi-meter layer of snow on the summit, and the temperature drops to -40 degrees! Design engineers made it possible for researchers and staff to stay on the mountain all year round.

In the Sinitsa mountain range between the villages of Krivorivnya and Verkhovyna, a small but very picturesque canyon hid. The mountain, on top of which this canyon is located, is called Dovbushanka - respectively, the canyon itself is called Dovbushan Komory.

In fact, the Dovbushevy Komory canyon is a rock that at some point very picturesquely split in two during the Ice Age.

There is a myth that in these rocks there is an entrance to a parallel world. There is also a legend that Oleksa Dovbush, the hero of local legends, hid his treasures in these caves. Dovbushevsky caves are a great option for a walk, but in the caves you should be careful and follow safety precautions.
