What to see in Shuya. Excursion to the sights of the city. Shuya is an ancient Russian imperial city with unique architectural monuments

We will start our journey through Shuya from the local pedestrian street. Malachi Belova Street, no joke, everyone here calls Arbat. The question "How to get to the pedestrian street?" brought the locals into a stupor.

In spring and autumn, the street looks like one big wasteland. Not enough sculptures and benches. But local residents are happy to rest here, and market traders sincerely and enthusiastically sell their goods.

However, if we discard criticism and remember what happened here a few years ago, then all that remains is to praise the administration for the improvement.

Most beautiful buildings on the street - these are shopping arcades of the 19th century.

It is known that the development of trade in Shuya was facilitated by comfortable position cities on the navigable river Teze.

Even foreign merchants came to trade in Shuya - in 1654 there was a shop of the English-Arkhangelsk trading company. The fame of the local fairs spread far around the world. There were even whole legends and proverbs, for example: "The Shuisky rogue will harness anyone to the yoke."

Today the city cannot boast of even out-of-town merchants, but there are quite a lot of local products. They sell honey, dairy products, Shuya chickens.

The coat of arms of Shuya was approved in 1781 by decree of the Russian Empress Catherine the Great. In the old coat of arms of Shuya there was a symbol of the city of Vladimir - a lion leopard, and Shuya herself was part of the Vladimir governorship.

Today, Shuya cannot give up his past and recognize himself as a county in the Ivanovo region. Attentive tourists probably could see the Vladimir coat of arms on local souvenirs, and notice the absence of the “Ivanovo region” in the address of the manufacturer. For those who do not know: not so long ago, Ivanovo was just a village in the Shuisky district of the Vladimir province.

Today, the coat of arms and flag of Shuya is a bar of soap on a red field, symbolizing the glorious Shuya soap factories. There is no symbol of the Ivanovo region in the picture.

The city tries to maintain the ancient tradition of soap making. Soap festivals are even held here - with a parade soap bubbles, a fair of bath and soap accessories, master classes in soap making and foam discos. If you did not manage to get to such a holiday, then soap souvenirs are best bought at the museum.

The main architectural and ecclesiastical sights of the city are the Resurrection Cathedral (1756) and the nearby bell tower (1810-1832).

The Shuya bell tower is one of the tallest bell towers in Russia and the most high building Ivanovo region.

At the time of writing the review, a radical reconstruction of the bell tower was being carried out. In the near future, I am sure, it will shine in all its glory, and the Shuya bells will again fill with church chimes.

In front of the bell tower there is a monument next to which everyone is taking pictures of the Russian New Martyrs.

Resurrection Cathedral is a few steps away. It is also being restored.

It is already clear today that in the case of a competently carried out reconstruction, this street can become the pearl of Shuya - a center of attraction for tourists and young people.

There are several on the street architectural monuments. For example, the house at 23 Teatralnaya Street is a merchant's estate of Dudkin in the style of late classicism.

The facade of the main building of the estate is decorated with a figured attic, small pilasters, architraves with figured stucco.

Next to the mansion, the tent of the same merchant is modestly located, in which, pay attention, there are as many as five false windows.

Another beautiful merchant's mansion.

After the theater street, you can go through the park towards the museum. The park is in a deplorable state.

Even the monument to Lenin does not inspire optimism.

Behind Lenin Square is perhaps the most beautiful building in Shuya - the former city government. Now there is a literary local history museum Konstantin Balmont.

The building is in pseudo-Russian style, like a painted tower from a Russian fairy tale. The museum was founded in 1968 on a voluntary basis and has over 30 thousand exhibits.

You can continue your tour of Shuya along Sovetskaya Street, which goes across the bridge.

On the way, you will come across, perhaps, the most colorful building in Shuya of the Soviet era.

The bridge is notable primarily for its pedestrian part, which is several times larger than the carriageway. Everything is very cute and can be used for romantic walks.

The views from the bridge are predominantly industrial. In the distance you can see the MPF - Mercerized Polo Factory Limited, which produces T-shirts from mercerized cotton.

This factory has nothing to do with the ancient Shui industry. If you want to look at local products, then visit the Shuisky Stitching and Embroidery Factory or the Shuisky Textile Shopping Center.

We will no longer torment you with a long and tedious text, but will end the article with “Shuya Sketches”. Shuyan, do not judge strictly.

Shuya's story

Before moving on to the story attractions, let's give a small historical background. According to one version, the settlement on the spot modern city Shuya existed since ancient times. It was founded by Finno-Ugric tribes. According to the same version, the name Shuya comes from the Finnish word "suo", which means "swamp, swampy place". Starting from 1403, the princes Shuisky are mentioned in documentary sources, who owned Shuya for several centuries. However, then the city itself was called Borisoglebskaya Sloboda - after the name of the church of Boris and Gleb. The Shuisky clan originates from the Suzdal princes. By the way, the last king of the Rurik dynasty - Vasily Ivanovich Shuisky - belonged to this family. For the first time a documentary mention of the city of Shuya (from modern name) is found in 1539 in the Nikon Chronicle - it tells about its devastation by the troops of the Kazan Khan. It is 1539 that is considered the date of foundation of the city. It is known that Shuya was repeatedly visited by reigning persons (Ivan the Terrible, Peter I, Alexander II). lucky geographical position Shui contributed to the development of industry and trade. In those days, the Teza River was navigable. Merchants came to the city not only from neighboring cities, but from remote regions of Russia and even from abroad. Shuya fairs were famous. In 1755, the first linen manufactory was opened. The textile industry begins to develop actively.

Attractions Shuya

Perhaps the most famous Shuya attractionResurrection Cathedral built at the beginning of the 19th century. It is known, first of all, for its 106-meter bell tower. It is the second largest in Russia (1st place is occupied by the bell tower Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg). It is not for nothing that the bell tower of the Resurrection Cathedral has become a symbol of the city of Shuya. In 1891, a huge bell (the 7th largest in Russia) weighing 1270 pounds was raised on it. It was cast in Moscow and installed in honor of the birthday of Nicholas II. Now the Resurrection Cathedral is a courtyard Nikolo-Shartomsky Monastery, which is located on the banks of the Teza River, 15 km from Shuya in the village of Vvedenye.

As noted earlier, the unique atmosphere of an old merchant town has been preserved in the city of Shuya. This is facilitated architectural landmarks past centuries: the house of the merchant Nekrasov, the fate of Pavlov and others. In Shuya there is a pedestrian street, along which it is very pleasant to walk. Pay attention to the building of the Kiselyovskaya hospital, which is located on Union Square (previously there was a Kremlin on the site of this square). Located nearby central square city named after Lenin. Ancient sights are also preserved here, for example, the building of the Trade Rows (the beginning of the 19th century). Two squares (Soyuznaya and Lenin) are separated from each other by a pond, and you can cross it by a picturesque bridge. Now in the Trade Rows is local history museum(address: Lenin Square, 2). There is an extensive collection that tells about the history of the city and the region. You will see old coins, costumes, household items, furniture and much more. A significant part of the exposition is devoted to the famous poet, who was born in the city of Shuya - Konstantin Balmont.

Museum lovers can also visit Shuisky Historical and Artistic and memorial museum them. Frunze. This museum was founded in 1939 and was dedicated to the famous revolutionary M. V. Frunze. At present, its subject matter has expanded significantly: it is a large museum complex. There is also an art collection, which contains works by local artists, and exhibits dedicated to history. The Frunze Museum regularly holds various festivals, competitions, exhibitions, and is engaged in scientific research. By the way, the exposition of the museum is located in two old merchant mansions, which in themselves are interesting architectural sights.

And more recently, in 2010, the Museum of Military Glory of the city of Shuya was opened.

Another interesting engineering attraction of the city of Shuya is the ancient wooden gateways XIX century.

At the beginning of the XX century. a tragic event occurred in Shuya. In 1922, the authorities tried to seize church valuables from the Resurrection Cathedral, but the inhabitants of the city took to the square to prevent this. Machine-gun fire was opened - several people were killed. After this incident, mass repressions against the clergy began. In 2007, a monument was opened to the clergy who suffered during the repressions of the 20s-30s of the XX century.

And, of course, as in any other ancient city, in Shuya a large number of temples. Before the revolution, there were about 20 of them. The famous landmark of Shuya has already been mentioned above: the Resurrection Cathedral with its 106-meter bell tower. In addition, in the city of Shuya there are: the Church of Peter and Paul, the Intercession Church, the Exaltation of the Cross Church, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Elias Church. Each of these temples deserves attention and is interesting in its own way.

Shuya is an ancient Russian city, former center Shuya principality. On this moment part of the Ivanovo region. The city has so much rich history, which could "plug into the belt" any locality included in the so-called Golden ring, but this direction is clearly not actively pursued here. Although there are certain shifts. It is unlikely that I ever went to Shuya on purpose, but I am very glad that I visited here as part of a sightseeing tour.

We were given two hours to inspect Shuya, one of which was for lunch. This is disastrously small for the city where Tsar Vasily Shuisky and the poet Konstantin Balmont are from. Only an hour to the city, which the Russian emperors loved to visit, where they have their own recipes for vodka and soap, and where the memory of the revolutionary leader M.V. is still honored. Frunze.

Excursion around Shuya

The main attraction of the city and its calling card is the bell tower of the Resurrection Cathedral, the construction of which under the guidance of different architects lasted several years and was completed in 1832. Its height is about 106 meters. This is one of the highest Orthodox bell towers in Russia and Europe. It has been recently restored, and it has also been illuminated at night, other buildings are hidden in the dark.

They didn’t give me time to climb the bell tower, just as they didn’t give me time to enter the Church of the Resurrection. It is incomprehensible to the mind how you can set aside a whole hour for lunch, and show the main sights almost from the bus window.

The year of construction of the cathedral is considered to be 1799, although after this date it was rebuilt. Yes, and until 1799 there was wooden church and then a stone temple.

The cathedral is famous primarily for the fact that it kept the Miraculous Icon of Shuya-Smolensk Mother of God. The legend says that in the middle of the 17th century there was an epidemic of plague in the city, it was decided to paint a new icon. It was supposed to be a list from the Icon of the Smolensk Mother of God. People believed that this icon helped the Smolensk people in the fight against the Polish invaders, and Shuya would help to defeat a terrible disease. The Image was painted by a local icon painter. Several times, leaving unfinished work for the night, in the morning he found that the baby, sitting in the arms of the Virgin, changed his position. Attempts to correct the image did not lead to anything and it was decided to leave everything as it is, and record what happened as the first miracle of the new icon. Once, while in Shuya, Peter I wished to take it away with him, and then the locals asked the emperor on their knees not to touch the icon. Now the location of the Icon of the Shuya-Smolensk Mother of God is unknown. One of the earliest lists from her is in Murom. There is another copy in Shuya in the Resurrection Cathedral. We saw only the one that is in the Palekh museum.

The icon disappeared after the sad events that took place in the city in the 20s of the 20th century. At that time, the new government confiscated valuables from temples. locals tried to resist it. An uprising began, but there was a military unit nearby and the rebellion was quickly suppressed with the help of soldiers. After the incident, the persecution of priests began throughout the country. These events are dedicated to the monument, the work of A. Rukovishnikov, opened in 2007 on the square in front of the bell tower.

Here merchants weighed carts with goods. A remake, as the original structure collapsed without waiting for restoration

Shuya water tower.

After our hour-long walk, there was a feeling expressed aloud by one of our sightseers: there is nothing to see in Shuya. But that's not the case at all. You just need at least a day for at least a cursory inspection.

The convenient location of trade river routes quickly made the city very large. shopping mall with its own Gostiny Dvor and serious international connections. Today Shuya is quite large locality, which has not lost historical values and is interesting with a very significant number of attractions.

Resurrection Cathedral

The sights of Shuya are very different big amount Orthodox churches and monasteries, among which special place occupies, perhaps, precisely the Resurrection Cathedral. Being the courtyard of the ancient Nikolo-Shartomsky monastery, it was erected at the very end of the 18th century. Although the most interesting element in the cathedral complex is, of course, its unique bell tower 106 meters high. Its uniqueness is explained by the fact that it became the first belfry not adjacent directly to the walls of the temple. Moreover, its bell was cast in Moscow at the expense of the manufacturer Pavlov and at that time was the greatest bell in Rus'.

Literary and Local Lore Museum named after Konstantin Balmont

The building of the 19th century, located in Shuya, is, in fact, two sights of this city of the Ivanovo region at once. On the one hand, it is a local history and historical Museum, where you can get acquainted with the history of the city of Shuya itself, as well as see objects of art, life and crafts of its indigenous inhabitants. On the other hand, this building (which, by the way, is an architectural monument) has become home to the only museum in Russia dedicated to the life and work of the Soviet symbolist poet Konstantin Balmont.

Kiselyovskaya hospital

A wonderful example of architecture in the style of late classicism, built in Shuya in the 40s of the XIX century. The U-shaped building of the basement building has two floors and was built with money and at the suggestion of the Kiselyov merchants as a gift to the residents of the city. Due to its architectural value, the building is considered one of the main city attractions. The church of St. Basil is also located on the territory and has been operating since the construction of the hospital. Previously, the church also had a wooden bell tower with a tin roof and very rich decoration, but it could not stand the fight with time.

prison castle

It would be more correct to call these ruins of an ancient prison “the remains of a prison castle”, but it will still be quite interesting to look at this attraction of Shuya. The first mention of the presence of a prison in this settlement was found in the annals of the 16th century. She was often subjected to seizures, arson and rebuilding, and her prisoners in different years were the most famous nobles and merchants of the times of Ivan the Terrible and Boris Godunov. At one time, even the revolutionary and Soviet military leader Frunze "stayed" here. At the prison there was a stone church, erected at the expense of the merchant Gundobin. Its building has been preserved, which cannot be said about the bell tower, and is used as an outbuilding.

Church of the Intercession

In the place where the oldest wooden cathedral church in Shuya stood until the middle of the 18th century, a beautiful red brick church was erected in 1751. Excavations on the territory of the monastery showed that earlier in the Kremlin of the church there was a city cemetery, which over time simply razed to the ground. Until the closing of the church, its sacristy kept the richest collection of archaeological and church relics from the most different years. At the beginning of the 19th century, a bell tower was added to the church, according to rumors, designed by the Italian Maricelli. History does not confirm this fact, but the belfry itself quickly became a local landmark thanks to its gilded tin spire and the most beautiful images on the porch.

Frunze Museum

The Municipal Museum, founded in 1939 in Shuya in memory of the Soviet military leader and revolutionary Mikhail Frunze, is another significant historical landmark of the city. This museum visually presents milestones in the development of Soviet power in the Ivanovo region, the personal belongings of the legendary people's commissar, as well as several dioramas of Chapaev and Frunze crossing the Belaya River. There are also exhibitions telling about Shuya's life before and after the Revolution, as well as a unique collection of bottles with secret messages, which was donated to the museum by a resident of the city, A.T. Kalinin.

Church of the Transfiguration

The Church of the Transfiguration, which is a significant historical and Orthodox landmark of Shuya, is located on the territory of the village of Melnichnoye, which, after the Revolution, became part of the city. The church was erected in 1836 at the place where an old healing spring spouted from the ground, shrouded in many legends and traditions, the main of which is the tale of the appearance of the icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker from the source. During the Soviet era, the temple was used as a warehouse for only 10 years, after which it was reopened in the 40s. The decoration of the church is distinguished by an abundance of rich decorations and ancient relics.
