The physiological basis of active O. is despecialization, i.e. elimination of the one-sidedness of the influence of work activity or the conditions in which it takes place. This kind of activity turns out to be tedious not so much because of its “load”, but because of the emerging disharmony of functions. By eliminating this disharmony, active O. increases the body's ability to adapt to tedious or unfavorable activities.

Active O.'s efficiency is defined by tediousness of the previous work and intensity of additional activity. With tedious work, the most effective is the inclusion of light additional activity in O.'s period. In light work, on the contrary, the greatest restorative effect is exerted by the inclusion of intense, strenuous additional activating activity. Failure to comply with this rule leads to a decrease in the effectiveness of active O., which in this case may turn out to be less effective than complete rest of the body.

With age, the direction of active O. changes: if in young people under the influence of additional activity during O. the motor function is most pronounced, then in older people the main thing is to improve the functions of blood circulation and respiration.

Each type of labor must correspond to a specific form of active O. in the form of breaks differentiated by duration and quality features, i.e. type of activating activity; passive O. is characterized only by duration.
