Historical reference

The territory of Kabardino-Balkaria was inhabited in ancient times, which is confirmed by manuscripts made before our era. A variety of peoples inhabited these places, then migrated and made room for new ones. Therefore, finally ethnic composition was formed only in the Middle Ages. But only in the nineteenth century, Kabardino-Balkaria became part of the Russian state. The KBR acquired its name and borders, which have remained valid to our time, closer to the twenties.

The development of the republic began with the founding of a city called Nalchik which is now its capital. Despite the fact that the first settlements appeared here already in the eighteenth century, Nalchik did not get the status of a city, mainly because it was a lonely fortress. But after the active construction and improvement of infrastructure, in 1921 once a small village got proud status of the capital of Kabardino- Balkar Republic .

Overcoming many difficulties, for example, the devastation brought by the war and stagnation in public life in the post-war years, Nalchik continued to exist, more than once recovering almost from the ashes.

As soon as life went back to normal, it was announced collapse of the USSR, and the inhabitants of the KBR had to start all over again. However, many tourists, thinking about the opportunity to visit this amazing place, are afraid of its relatively close location from the territories that are commonly called "hot spots". Therefore, it should be noted that in this sense the republic is quite prosperous, and there is nothing to fear.

Kabardino-Balkaria in the modern world

Kabardino-Balkaria is currently a very important subject, because there are many forest and recreational resources. Not only the infrastructure began its active development, but also the agriculture of the republic is being improved every year. Despite all the modern implementations, the KBR manages to maintain its way of life, identity and culture.

The most interesting attraction is the highest mountain not only in Russia, but throughout Europe, the name of which is known to everyone -. There are also "five-thousanders", as they are commonly called. It is for this reason that Kabardino-Balkaria is a favorite place for climbers.   • Mount Dykhtau;
  • Mount Koshtantau;
  • Mount Shkhara;
  • Mount Mizhirgi;
  • Mount Dzhangitau.

Unfortunately, in recent years there has been a noticeable outflow of the indigenous population. Eight hundred and fifty thousand people live in Nalchik, of which half are visitors. This means that over time most of What is valuable in the CBD at the moment, including culture and its identity, can be suppressed by new trends and improvements, as well as the active development of the service and tourism sectors.

Mountain Elbrus

It can be singled out as a separate attraction known to many in the world - this is Elbrus. historical values

The sights of Kabardino-Balkaria include places with a rich history:

▪ Watchtowers of Upper Balkaria.

Upper Balkaria is a place where modern villages and dilapidated ruins of old auls coexist. A number of monuments of nature and architecture united in a small area into an archaeological and tourist complex under the same name "Upper Balkaria".

Some of the very interesting, from a historical point of view, are Watchtowers Upper Balkaria. The towers are square-shaped structures with several floors, which rose to a height of up to 17 meters. The thickness of the stone walls at the base reached 2 meters. They were intended to save from attacks by enemies and in case of other dangers. Provisions were stored on the first floors. And on the top - people lived. In quiet times, the family lived next to the tower in houses. Such buildings were family, and they began to build even before the XVI century. The tower of the Abaev princes, the ancestors of the locals, is best preserved. The last inhabitants lived in it until the end of the 19th century;

▪ El-Tubyu burial grounds in the Chegem Gorge.

This monument of the past centuries attracts the attention of many tourists. The area is called El-Tubyu, which literally translates as "a village at the bottom of the valley." The first settlements appeared here about 15 thousand years ago. At first, the buildings were wooden, then stone towers were erected to protect against enemies. Mountain landscape around it did not give the opportunity to bury the dead in the ground, so soon a whole necropolis grew up near the village.

Those buildings dead city that have survived to this day belong to the X-XVII centuries. There are only 8 of them. Some are more like ruins, while others are in good condition for their age. They are built of large blocks of stone, which are well hewn and plastered.

The Balkars try to bypass the necropolis, fearing to disturb or anger their ancestors.

Landmarks of mountain landscapes

The mountainous terrain can hardly do without the gorges that cut through the entire terrain of Kabardino-Balkaria.

One of the most famous is the Cherek Gorge. It is a stone canyon. At its bottom flows a mountain river, which gave its name to these places.

The height of the sheer cliffs is more than 500 meters, and the minimum distance between the two sides is 30. The height and narrowness of the canyon explains why almost no sunlight reaches its bottom. Entrance here is possible only through the village of Babugent.

This place is famous not only for landscapes and breathtaking heights, but also for local lakes and ancient monuments. For example, the famous Blue Lakes.

They are karst, and the presence of hydrogen sulfide in the water gives them a blue color.

It is worth noting: Lake Chirik-Kol stands out especially, which translates as “Rotten Lake”. The name is explained by the fact that, starting from a depth of 25 meters, the waters are poisoned with hydrogen sulfide compounds.

The exact depth of the reservoir is not known, but it is believed that it is 279 meters. According to this indicator, in Russia it belongs to the second place after Baikal. According to an old legend, the reservoir was formed after the fall of a dragon, which was killed by a local hero.

Unusual is Lake Donguz Orun-Kel, which is located on the border of Russia and Georgia. It is located on two peaks at once, surrounded by steep mountain slopes and rocks.

The source here is the melting glaciers around. They often fall into the reservoir along with the rocks, which is why the waters turn into unusual colors due to the content of various trace elements in them. Donguz Orun-Kol is better to admire from afar, because the coast is muddy and swampy.

The most famous gorge in these places is the Baksan gorge. Compared to Chereksky, it is quite wide.

Part of the sheer cliffs are light yellow, the other is very dark, and all because of the different composition of the rock. The beautiful Adyr-Su gorge remains popular for climbers.

healing springs

The terrain of Kabardino-Balkaria is conducive not only to entertainment and admiring the scenery, but also to the restoration of shaky health. Ancient volcanic origin these rocks provides the presence of mineral springs that help in the treatment of many diseases.

One of these are the sources of Jily-Su, which means " warm water". This is a health resort, which is located right at the base of Mount Elbrus, at an altitude of about 2300 meters above sea level.

Healing water helps to get rid of many diseases, for example, diseases gastrointestinal tract, obesity and diabetes, cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system. The only inconvenience lies in the difficulties associated with travel to this place, as well as the lack of "civilized" recreational conditions. We'll have to stock up on an SUV and tents.

If it is not possible to search for the source of Djily-Su, there are more accessible and comfortable places. This is Polyana Narzanov. It is located near the village of Baidaevo and covers an area of about 3 square kilometers with equipped parking lots, gazebos and a cafeteria.
