The first undeniable discovery of Australia is documented at the end of February 1606. The expedition of the Dutch East India Company, led by Willem Jansson, landed from the ship "Duifken" ("Dove") on the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The study of the Australian artesian basins was started by a meteorologist Henry Russell, who studied the Darling basin from 1869.
