The Wax Museum. What to see and where to go in Odessa

Photo taken: August 2011

We started this 3-day trip around Odessa from city beaches. By the way, we arrived in Odessa from Moscow at night, and in the morning we were already exploring the surroundings in the area of the Fontanskaya road. Before coastline beaches were within reach.

Odessa beaches

My friend and I walked along the health track from the Riviera, past the beach for the disabled, to the beach of 10th Fontana.

The beaches of the "Riviera" were even equipped with showers with fresh water on the shore. I, in general, for the first time I meet such luxury on sea city beaches. We were also pleased with the tents with women's T-shirts.

Such funny women's T-shirts must be sold anywhere, but for some reason I noticed them for the first time only in Odessa.

Odessa, however, is a very beautiful and cheerful city. On the beaches here they sell funny women's T-shirts, and on Deribasovskaya - jokes. I personally saw a stall of a joke dealer on Deribasovskaya street, on which it was written that only a woman without brains loves a man without jokes.

We walked past the Maristella Club spa hotel, saw another beautiful Odessa seascape behind it, and then returned to go to the center.

I really wanted to get to Deribasovskaya, Primorsky Boulevard and the Marine Station. The list of cult sights of Odessa that we were going to visit was, of course, more complete.

List of attractions

The famous Russian poet Nikolai Kozyar, nicknamed the Liar (he visited Odessa with relatives more than 20 times), kindly advised what we need to do in this city. I quote:

  • you need to visit Deribasovskaya,
  • sit with Utyosov not far from Utochkin,
  • take a walk at the seaport,
  • climb the Potemkin Stairs,
  • walk along Teschiny Bridge,
  • skimp on Privoz,
  • visit one of the most beautiful theaters in the world,
  • visit 411 battery,
  • take a walk along Primorsky Boulevard, admiring the plane trees.

For three days and two nights in Odessa, we all did just that.

Walks to the Seaport at night, as well as trips to Battery 411 and Privoz were framed in separate photo galleries.

In total, I took about 400 photos in Odessa, the best of which are presented here.

Deribasovskaya

The first time we entered Deribasovskaya from the side Cathedral Square. Here, on the edge of the City Garden, one of the 12 chairs stands, and Leonid Utyosov sits on a bench.

At the other end of the flower bed, Leonid Utyosov is sitting on a bench.

Not far from Utesov, Sergey Utochkin is standing on the stairs in the same beautiful bronze uniform. Utochkin, by the way, was the second in Russia to take to the air in an airplane.

Next to it entertainment establishment there is a restaurant "Pecheskago" with Kisa and Osya at the entrance, attracting tourists. Ostap Bender and Kisa Vorobyaninov are here - another attraction of Odessa.

Passage HD quality

On Deribasovskaya there is another very a nice place is "Passage". While we have not moved far from Utochkin and Utesov, I propose to take a quick look at him.

Deribasovskaya, house 33. In this passage are regular shops

Once here, you can experience a real catharsis.

All the walls of the Passage on Deribasovskaya are decorated with sculptural compositions

At first I stood and looked around. Then he started taking pictures. I understood that I was not in St. Petersburg, but in Odessa. And that all these sculptures adorn simple shops. In Moscow, for example, GUM looks a hundred times simpler.

These sculptures are the best shopping inspiration

It is beautiful and calm here, there is no fuss and queues.

This beautiful "Passage" was built by the architect Lev Vlodek. Then you can see another of his masterpieces - this is a house with atlantes on Gogol Street.

Monument to Joseph Deribas

By the way, I started my walk along Deribasovskaya from the end of this street. At the beginning of Deribasovskaya stands the founder of Odessa - Joseph Deribas with a shovel and a plan of the city.

Walking around Odessa at night was also very interesting. Every evening we went out to Deribasovskaya.

Odessa at night

Odessa is especially beautiful at night. Carriages go around the city at night.

Very good and kind people live in Odessa, at least we came across just such people. One girl, walking her Doberman in the evening, showed us the main sights of almost the entire center of Odessa at night.

We walked around Odessa at night for almost an hour. I looked around, not delving into the topographical subtleties of the city's environs. I know that we were definitely on Ekaterininskaya Square.

Then we walked along the Sabaneev bridge.

Here is Gogol Street ahead.

In the afternoon we once again walked along Gogol Street, looked at this old house number 14
(photo of this house in full size and HD quality with resolution 3000 by 2100 pixels can be opened in a new window)

Old houses in Odessa deserve, in general, a more attentive attitude and a special conversation. There will be no quotes from Wikipedia and historical references. I'll just show you what I saw.

We walked along the Mother-in-law bridge. Mother-in-law's bridge sways like that - just tin.

The girl with the Doberman showed us another attraction of Odessa - this is house number 4 in Vorontsovsky Lane. The trick is that it is triangular in shape.

Here we said goodbye to the kind mistress of the Doberman and went for a walk further along the night Odessa by ourselves.

Seaside boulevard

Primorsky Boulevard lay ahead.

And here is another mayor of Odessa - Duke Duc de Richelieu. By the way, Duke is a relative of the well-known Cardinal Richelieu.

Here we went down the Potemkin stairs and looked at the Seaport in Odessa at night.

Then we walked along the night Seaside Boulevard. He was covered in night lights.

Behind Alexander Sergeevich is Dumskaya Square and beautiful building Odessa City Hall.

Archaeological Museum

Here, very close, stands the beautiful building of the Odessa Archaeological Museum.

Before archaeological museum there is a sculpture of heroes Greek legend Laokun and his two sons who fight snakes.

It is very close to the Odessa Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater

However, it is better to look at the theater building during the day.

The building of the Odessa Theater is one of the most beautiful in the world, and is the main attraction of Odessa. Wikipedia says that Forbes magazine included the Odessa Theater in the list of the most unusual sights in Eastern Europe.

Photos of the Odessa Theater are presented here in high resolution, thanks to which the architectural details of this city landmark of Odessa can be viewed in more detail.

To the left of the theater is former house Navrotsky
(photo in HD quality with resolution 3000 by 2000 pixels can be opened in a new window for detailed consideration)

Architecture of Odessa HD quality

Modern Odessa is very diverse. Its streets combine old architecture and typical Soviet buildings.

On the left in the photo is the Holy Assumption Cathedral, which is located in Odessa on Preobrazhenskaya Street, 70.

I started my walk around Odessa from Preobrazhenskaya Street, photographing everything old houses contract. Personally, I was more interested in the old architecture of the city in Odessa.

All photos of old houses below are full size and in high HD quality.

By the way, in the old houses of Odessa, the furniture is also old.

Cafe "Gogol-Mogol"

There is one cool cafe on Gogol Street, which not only I consider Odessa landmark. Odessans themselves love him very much. The Gogol-Mogol fence consists of colored bicycles, there is a cool Dnepr refrigerator at the entrance, and the countertops inside the cafe are held up by books.

All these photos of "Gogol-Mogol" can be viewed in an enlarged form.

From Gogol Street we turned onto Teschin Bridge.

Mother-in-law bridge

Mother-in-law bridge is another attraction of Odessa. This bridge hangs very high and swings strongly.

"Southern Palmyra" is also known outside of Ukraine. This colorful town with sparkling humor is different rich history(due to the multinational composition of the population). “Wide firths, green chestnuts, Goydaetsya scow on the roads of Blakyt. At the beauty of Odessa, the cotton naked of the childish rokіv entered the right sailor ... "

Odessa is a separate historical value of Ukraine. It is a city of sailors, entrepreneurs, homeless cats and dogs, old courtyards, narrow streets, humor and, of course, a city of wonderful and significant people. After all, it was here that such famous Odessans were born and lived as one of the founders of the city - Prince Potemkin, theater actor - Leonid Utesov, writer - Korney Chukovsky (it was in Odessa News that his articles about exhibitions of paintings and books began to be published), Leonid Pasternak , Mikhail Zhvanetsky and many, many others ...

Why do I love Odessa? Difficult question, but I'll try to answer it.

Once in Odessa, you get off the train, and you immediately find yourself in a special atmosphere - sea air, very different from Moscow; taxi drivers offering to get anywhere, for a lot of money; grandmothers with signs "A house by the sea with all amenities."

I'll start my story with the main attraction of Odessa - Deribasovskaya street.

There is always fun, everyone will find something to their liking. You can just take a walk, look into the Odessa courtyards, you can smoothly move from one cafe to another.

Pay attention to the Kompot cafe - home-style delicious, retro atmosphere. main feature branded drink - fresh fruit compote (served in liter jars), apparently hence the name. Breakfast in Compote is a great start to the day.

Another institution that I like is Yakitoria (Deribassovskaya St., corner of Ekaterininskaya St.), but this is for lovers Japanese cuisine. Relaxed atmosphere, pleasant gatherings on the balcony, very good hookah. Nothing to do with Moscow Yakitoria, only the name.

We burn calories eaten on Deribasovskaya. The next point of our walk will be the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Marine Station and the Potemkin Stairs. In my opinion, the most romantic places Odessa. Odessa is unthinkable without its Opera House, which made it famous all over the world. Forbes magazine included Odessa Opera theatre in the list of the most significant sights of Eastern Europe.

The Potemkin Stairs has 192 steps. Check it out!

And, of course, the pride of Odessa is the Sea Port.

If you still have strength on the way back, take a walk to Teschiny Bridge. Ask why mother-in-law? There are two versions: the first is because it is the longest and narrowest in the city and sways with strong wind“like a mother-in-law’s tongue”, the second, more truthful - in the 70s the head of Odessa went to visit his mother-in-law for pancakes, the path seemed long to him, so he decided to build a bridge.

The square in front of the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater, popularly known as "Teatralnaya Square", is one of the most beautiful and remarkable squares in the city. A popular place for folk festivals, festivities, meetings and rallies, as well as the place of the most famous and popular stories and scandals.

Only the debate over the return of the stele with the names of the Heroes of Socialist Labor to the square of the city and the addition of 19 names to the names of the Heroes Soviet Union, disputes over the creation and installation of sculptural composition David Oistrakh - a world-famous musician from Odessa. How passions flared up around two small squares, successfully completing the formation of the square near the Opera and Ballet Theater.

Odessans, who are interested in the history of their city, remember 1995, in which sensational discovery- "and the history of the city, after all, began here..." . The place of laying the first house of Odessa - Prince Grigory Semyonovich Volkonsky was found. The house once occupied the entire block from the current Richelieu Street - between Lanzheronovskaya and Deribasovskaya. In the remains of the building were found: Catherine's penny, laid with a double-headed eagle up, a rusted dagger and fragments of crystal glasses, a tray and a bottle with a cork. These artifacts are included in the exposition of the Odessa Local History Museum, which tells about the founding of Odessa on August 22, 1794.

In the same excavation, the remains of front staircase Lanzheronov Palace from expensive Mediterranean marble. And also revealed the most ancient layers that hid luxury items related to the ancient period in the history of the city.

Thus, this place of Old Odessa can surprise its residents more than once, and tell them true story foundations of the city.

Alexander Park

Alexander Park was founded in 1875 during a visit to Odessa by Emperor Alexander II. The history of this park is closely intertwined with the history of the city itself. It was popular place among Odessans in the 19th and 20th centuries. Pushkin, Gogol, Chekhov, Akhmatova and many other representatives of the creative intelligentsia liked to walk along the wide boulevards.

In 1954, the park was renamed in honor of the famous Soviet writer Taras Shevchenko. The park acquired the ideological orientation of the Soviet era, which affected its further development.

Nowadays, Alexander Park has not lost its popularity among the citizens and guests of Odessa. Its length along the sea is almost a kilometer, and towards the city center - 700 meters. There are many in the park beautiful alleys And green spaces, architectural monuments of the 19th century and the reign of the Soviet regime.

And what sights of Odessa did you like? There are icons next to the photo, by clicking on which you can rate a particular place.

The Potemkin Stairs

The Potemkin Stairs acquired its name in 1955, before that it was known as the Boulevard, Primorskaya, Richelieu, Giant Stairs.

The famous staircase was built between 1837 and 1841 to take you down to the seafront port. The staircase gained worldwide fame thanks to the film "Battleship Potemkin", in the key scene of which a baby stroller rolls down its endless steps.

Currently, the Potemkin Stairs, 142 meters long, consists of 192 steps and a dozen spans. The descent starts from Primorsky Boulevard and ends at the roadway. To get to the passenger terminals of the Odessa port, you should use the underground passage.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Odessa was the third largest city in the world in terms of Jewish population (after New York and Warsaw). The creation of the museum of the history of the Jews of Odessa became an opportunity to tell about the life of this people in general and about the outstanding Odessa Jews.

“Odessa was made by the Jews,” Isaac Babel once wrote. The museum was also created by Jews who are trying to preserve the unique Odessa flavor that this wonderful city by the sea is famous for. Former Communal apartment, now bought out, contained 7,000 items of storage (documents, photographs, books, newspapers, postcards, religious and household items, musical instruments, works of art, etc.). Of these, more than 1,000 are on permanent display. The financial costs of replenishing the exposition are minimal due to the gratuitous help of collectors and citizens who bring here the remains of family heirlooms.

The atmosphere in the museum is unofficial, everything is quiet here, at home, without unnecessary fuss and unnecessary pathos. And every thing, even the smallest and most inconspicuous, has its own destiny associated with a specific person or the life of an entire family. A wonderful, touching museum that makes you take a fresh look at the history of the Jewish people.

Golden shore

Beach "Gold Coast" is located at the 16th station of the Big Fountain. It compares favorably with the first landscaped promenade in the city. European level, which was opened on May 11, 2011.

The updated view of the embankment attracts more and more vacationers. This is a two-hundred-meter walking area with places to relax, viewing platforms, an alley of planted plane trees and comfortable slopes directly to the beach. Small architectural forms, granite coating pedestrian zone, a fountain and stone lions, benches - it's nice to take a leisurely walk or sit here, enjoying the sea air. Night illumination of the embankment is designed in the classic style of "old Odessa".

From the embankment directly to the coastline lead comfortable slopes. It should be noted especially the slopes to the sea and places public use equipped for people with disabilities.

The beach "Gold Coast" is well equipped. Sunbeds, umbrellas to protect from the sun and a variety of views water activities provided for additional fee. There are rides for kids and scooter rentals for adults.

Here, nothing will prevent you from relaxing during the day with a glass of cool wine in the open air in cozy cafes. And in the evening you can look into the restaurant "Gold Coast", where the menu is dominated by sea motifs in the form of fish dishes, and the interior of the establishment is simply impeccable.

Seaside boulevard

Primorsky Boulevard is one of the most beautiful streets in Odessa. It starts from the Vorontsov Palace, built according to the project of the architect F. Boffo in 1828 on the site of the Turkish fortress Yeni Dunya, and ends with the building of the City Duma (formerly the stock exchange), near which in 1904, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Crimean War, a cast-iron a gun. Also in front of the Duma building is a monument to A. S. Pushkin.

Only one side of the boulevard is built up with buildings, the steep slope of the other side leads to the port of Odessa, to which the famous Potemkin Stairs descend from the boulevard. Above the stairs there is a monument to the most famous of the Odessa mayors Armand du Plessis - Duke de Richelieu (great-great-great-great-nephew of the well-known Cardinal Richelieu).

During the construction of the boulevard, workers discovered the remains of an ancient Greek settlement. After produced archaeological work, it was decided to cover the excavations with a glass dome, and now this place is one of the attractions of the boulevard.

The elite of the city originally settled on Primorsky Boulevard, here you can see the houses where Pototsky, Naryshkin, Marini and others lived, who left their mark on history, personalities. These houses, as well as the buildings located here offices and hotels create a unique architectural ensemble, the pride of the townspeople and the object of admiration for the guests of the city.

Odessa catacombs

Odessa catacombs are an underground labyrinth and a network of passages near Odessa and its environs with a total length of about 2500 kilometers. Temperature regime here all year round it stays at around +14 degrees Celsius. The depth in some places reaches up to 100 meters.

The history of the origin of the catacombs is associated with the extraction of shell rock and limestone for the construction of the city since the 18th century. This cheap, but suitable for construction material was very actively used for the construction of houses, churches, barracks and other buildings for various purposes. The stone was cut without any definite plan, chaotically. This explains the complexity of this labyrinth, where there is no pattern.

In addition to the anthropogenic origin of the catacombs, the network also includes passages natural origin such as karst caves.
