We read and speak Greek. Basic phrases and expressions. Is everything in Greece

Until this summer, I preferred to relax with a child in Turkey. It is quite possible to spend 2 weeks there, almost without getting out of the hotel, and my daughter (7 years old) is not yet very interested in various architectural sights. But for the third year in a row I no longer wanted to visit Turkey.

The travel agency suggested that I consider Crete. According to reviews on the Internet, we chose between hotels with good animation, with delicious food and a sandy gently sloping beach, knowing that everything is not good at once. Well, at least for such moderate money. My daughter chose a hotel with a beach. Looking ahead, I will say that everything turned out to be much better reviews in the Internet.

The hotel "Mythos Palace Resort & Spa" was recently renovated, the room was very decent, the food was delicious, the beach was clean. We flew by Aeroflot from Sheremetyevo. I was pleasantly surprised by the absence of queues for passport control. We took off on schedule, to the minute. On the plane the child received travel set with coloring books, stickers, puzzles from Aeroflot and the whole flight was busy. A pleasant surprise.

We were met at the airport. On a collective bus to the hotel about 2 hours. The hotel itself is located in a good location - on the western side of Crete, between Rethymnon and Chania, next to the national road that stretches across the entire island. Private transfer I didn't order this time.

We settled in quickly and without problems. The room was very well served with a plate of fruit and a bottle of red wine. We ate on the road. By the way, about food. My daughter, like most children of different nationalities, preferred spaghetti with tomato sauce, french fries, ice cream and fruit. Well, for 10 days I enjoyed a Greek salad with Cretan olive oil. I really liked the local brynza and cheeses, various stuffed vegetables, pies with herbs, very, very tasty yogurt, honey.

After unpacking, we went to the beach. The beach is sandy, the sunset is very gentle. But there were always small waves on the sea. My child, and all vacationers, even grandparents in their seventies, jumped over them with pleasure.

The next day in the morning there was a traditional meeting with the guide. Roman (a very pleasant young man with a sense of humor) spoke about local features and, as usual, excursions. Excursions are very expensive, we chose only one - the Palace of Knossos. Because being in Crete and not visiting the Palace of Knossos is not serious, and it’s better to be there with a guide, and not on your own. And the child was attracted to this excursion by the mountain eagles that meet over the Lassithi Pass (and we really saw them) and the so-called "Cave of Zeus". They also ordered a rental car from the guide, although this could be done in the nearest village at half the price. But it seemed to be so calm. Foreign country, mountain roads, you never know. I was pleased with the guide's warning not to try to bribe the police - they will put you in jail! And that road patrols (naive people!), When they stand, they flash their headlights. And they are usually visible for a couple of kilometers. The guide gave a map of the island and drew a couple of routes.

After walking around the hotel, we found a table tennis table (free of charge) and billiards for 1 euro. They played regularly.

A small stream flows near the hotel, in which water turtles live, looking more like hungry crocodiles. My daughter fed them well.

Near the hotel is the village of Kavros. There are many different shops and taverns. From Kavros to the immediate surroundings by different routes a small train is running. On it we reached the mountain freshwater lake Qurna. I got a lot of pleasure from riding around the neighborhood on a train. Around what just does not grow - olives, watermelons, figs, oranges. I show my daughter the vineyard, she is so businesslike: "So there should be a winery nearby!"

We rented a catamaran on the lake for an hour. Having swum to the other side of the lake, we saw a mountain goat, which went down almost along steep slope drink to the water.

We went to Chania in a rented car - former capital Crete. It was very difficult to get around the city. The streets are narrow, almost across the intersection there are signs "brick" and "no turn allowed". After some wandering, we arrived at the port, where maritime museum. The museum is interesting, with models of ships from antiquity to the present day. I recommend. Then they wanted to get to the beach with pink sand, but a couple of times they turned the wrong way, and could not find the exit to national road and decided to return to the hotel.

In the nearest town to the hotel - Heliopolis - there is a so-called "house in the sea". This is a chapel, which is located about 200 meters from the shore. A path of volcanic stones leads to it. While you are walking, you are enveloped in waves from both sides, and crabs scatter from under your feet. The Greeks are devout, the church is not separated from the state, in every small chapel there are icons, incense, candles and a jar for donations. Along the roads, you can often see miniature, like toy, chapels, which are put up by grateful drivers, if they were not badly injured in an accident.

On an excursion to the Palace of Knossos, I had to go to the other end of Crete. The first stop was the Monastery of Our Lady of the Heart, built presumably in the 14th century. The monastery is active, very picturesque. Then we crossed a high plateau, above which, to the delight of the child, we saw a bald eagle. We drove around the stunning high-altitude plateau of Lassithi and drove up to Mount Diktos, where the cave of Zeus is located. It was necessary to climb 800 m uphill to the cave. Below are old people with donkeys, and for 10 euros you can make your ascent easier. Of course, my daughter wanted to ride a donkey.

On the way to the cave you can see holm oaks. Their wood is so heavy that it sinks in water. And in appearance they look more like a tall shrub, and you can guess that these are oaks only by acorns. The cave was not very large and picturesque, in my opinion. The child got acquainted with stalactites and stalagmites, and that's good.

800 meters down overcame more fun. In a cafe near the parking lot, they drank a very tasty orange juice for 2.5 euros. They asked the seller for a discount - they didn’t receive it, but they were treated to amazing pies with cottage cheese and honey. So we were satisfied. After the caves were taken to a local potter who demonstrated his art. And the children and everyone who wished had the opportunity to try to reproduce his actions and take their creations home. Then there was lunch and a tour of the Palace of Knossos or the labyrinth of the Minotaur.

Excavations of the palace, which existed 3.5 thousand years ago, and the level of development ancient civilization make an impression. The child exemplary followed the guide, and I thought that, probably, it was already possible to travel with her, and not just sit by the sea. Enjoyed the rest of the days warm sea and delicious food, collected shells on the beach, bought souvenirs. From the trip, I brought delicious Cretan olive oil, honey, natural cosmetics and a boost of energy until the next vacation.

In the hotel "Mythos Palace Resort & Spa" we rested in May last year. Quite a decent hotel and the children are not bored there. Playground, animation - everything matches. The food and work of the staff is also at a high level.

Do you like to walk in open and comfortable sandals? It was not always considered good manners. Let's go through the main milestones of the oldest type of footwear. We usually call sandals open summer shoes made of straps, with an open heel and most often an open toe, with low heels. It evokes associations with childhood, when we all walked in sandals in the heat, and also, probably, with a vacation spent by the sea. However, despite such frivolous associations, sandals are one of the most ancient types ...

Judge for yourself: " big land" - Please! Part of Greece is located on Balkan Peninsula surrounded by countries Southern Europe. The smaller peninsula is the Peloponnese, where you can cross the isthmus of Corinth.

For your information, in ancient times the city of the same name was the most important shopping center thanks to its favorable position: two gulfs (Corinthian and Sardonian), several harbors, Athens is within easy reach - some 78 km. Archeology lovers, do not miss the moment to visit modern Corinth: just 7 km from it there is an archaeological reserve, the main feature of which is Mount Acrocorinth with the remains of the acropolis.

Love to splash in the sea? Choose any - Aegean, Ionian or Mediterranean with three thousand islands in addition.

Something is missing for a complete set ... Perhaps mountains! On this account, I have the following story in store: according to legend, during the period of the creation of the world, God distributed the land between countries, sifting it through a sieve. Everyone got a little, but soon only stones remained at the bottom of the sieve, which the creator threw over his shoulder. This is how Greece appeared - the most mountainous country in Europe: 80% of its territory is covered with hills of various kinds. The most impressive mountain range - Pindus (or Pindy) - extends from the north-west of the country to the Peloponnese. Is not Swiss Alps, of course: the average climb is only 2650 meters, but there is also Olympus - the abode of celestials and highest point Greece (2919 m).

The list would be incomplete without canyons and gorges. And here Greece has something to brag about: the Vikos Gorge in the Pindus Mountains is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most deep canyon(about 1 km) with a distance between the edges of only 1100 m. It is part of national park"Vikos - Aoos" together with mountain range Tifmi and several villages of Zagoria.

Zagoria is worthy of special mention: for 1000 sq. km. sheltered only 45 villages with total number about 5,000 inhabitants. It is not difficult to calculate the population density in this area - five people per square kilometer. Compare with the rest of Greece, where 73.8 inhabitants are forced to huddle on a patch measuring 1000 by 1000 meters. Urgently going to Zagoria!

By the way, Vikos has only one rival - grand canyon in the state of Arizona. Vikos National Park is also good because it is not spoiled by mass tourism. Hiking along the Voidomatis River - the lot of singles, mainly from countries Western Europe.

Note that with such a wealth of landscapes, Greece is a small, compact country. For comparison: total area it's about the size of the state of Alabama...

The largest and most populous region in Greece. Do not confuse it with the independent state of the same name, the former republic of Yugoslavia, located in the neighborhood and sharing 228 km with Greece land border. Of course, once both Macedonias, together with part of Bulgaria and Albania, were part of a powerful empire of the same name. For the Greeks, independent Macedonia is a sore subject to this day. Despite the UN recognition of the Republic of Macedonia (or "The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" - that's what the full name sounds like), a rare Greek will remain indifferent when mentioning neighbors. Personally, I really liked “little” Macedonia - I spent two weeks there, traveling by bike. However, she did not dare to enter Greek territory at that time, fearing visa problems.

However, let us return to Greek Macedonia. It is here that Mount Olympus is located, the ascent to which usually begins in the city of Litochoro, which means “City of the Gods” in translation. Olympus is crowned by two peaks - Mitikas ("The Nose") and Stephanie. No special sports training is required for storming the peaks - the usual hiking trail goes upstairs, as in some Polish or Slovak Tatras. It is surprising why the first ascent to the "Olympic" peak "" was made only in 1913?

Any part of Macedonia is easily accessible from the regional capital, Thessaloniki.

Good travel portal dedicated to Macedonia: http://www.macedonia.info/.

Another one historical area which Greece shared with Turkey and Bulgaria. This northeastern corner of the country has given rise to many celebrities, both mythical (the musicians Orpheus and Museos) and real: the philosopher and mathematician Democritus, as well as the founder of sports medicine, Gerodicus. The latter was one of the teachers of Hippocrates.

Among the remarkable towns, I would note the center of Greek crafts Komotini. The city nestled at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains, 6 km from it is located national park Nymphaya with hiking trails leading to the ruins of two Byzantine fortresses. In addition, in the city itself there are three good museums - Archaeological, Folk and Byzantine art.

Thrace

Where did this stupid saying come from - everything is in Greece? Well, yes, there juices in packages are so tasty that if they squeeze the same thing in front of you, it will not be the same. By color and smell - juice, the taste let us down. And they have - from the package, and the difference is noticeable even by smell.
Greece has everything... Yes, there an ordinary Metaxa for 10 euros in a hardened outlet is tastier than a 20-year-old Hennessy from duty free in Domodedovo. We are accustomed to another Metaxa. Even the name on the label does not unite it with the real one.
In Greece, everything is ... it may very well be. inclined to believe. But I doubt it.

I have been raving about Hellas since childhood. The battle of Thermopylae, Alexander the Great, the invincible phalanx, the edge of the Oikumene and the Trojan War. Knowledge was fragmentary, scooped from the books of the children's Pushkin library and required reinforcement by practice.

Who knew that in Halkidiki there are exactly the same bumps as in mine hometown?! Well, okay, okay, Greek cones are bigger. Okay, much more. But bumps! And we threw them in childhood. I am sure that the future Tsar Alexander the Great also threw cones when his teacher Aristotle turned away from his students.
(photo of Aristotle blocked at the request of the copyright holder).
First of all, we explored the beach. If it is Greek, then everything should be on it.
And the sand really was, and really not the same as everyone else. Here

There was a palm too. Palm is common. Don't argue.

Oranges grow right on the street and no one eats them - they are wild and unbridled. But we, I'm sure, would have devoured such. Or for a smell - in "Troy". Do you feel how Greece has firmly taken root in us?!

Did you feel? No?! Then tell me, what color were the eyes of Achilles' dog? No need to turn away and pretend that they are not talking to you. Okay, let's make it easy. What was the name of Odysseus' son? Also don't know? Have you watched The Greek Fig Tree? Then tell me, is it really a fig tree, and is it really Greek?

We didn't stay long on the beach. We went to explore the surroundings. I won’t lie, Meteora doesn’t start right after Halkidiki. But by our standards, six hours by bus one way is within easy reach.

On the way we were entertained by three guides: English, German and a girl who thought she knew Russian.
- look right. Here Alexander of Macedon had a pony.
Do you understand what she is talking about? If I had not read about Tsar Alexander, I would not have guessed in my life that we are talking about Bukefal, the legendary horse of Macedonia. Here, on the right side of the bus, the king of the horse was imal.

We've arrived. Everything that you see from this rock, all this was not. Several million years ago, there was an ocean here. You can say that he was everywhere a few million years ago, and you will be right, but in part. If there was an ocean everywhere, then not everywhere receded so beautifully.
After millions of years, following dinosaurs and pterodactyls, monks appeared here. They decided to settle in these beautiful and almost inaccessible places.

There are many versions of how brave hermits raised building materials to such a steep. But the fact remains that they did it by hand! Monastery Holy Trinity. The height of the cliff is 400 meters!

I don't know what chains are for. But the monastery is already female.

The very rocks from which the sea receded beautifully millions of years ago. I got into the frame for scale.

On the way back, do not believe it (I still do not believe myself), we stopped near the very place where 300 brave Spartans died. (The Americans made an extremely nasty movie about this feat). Battle of Thermopylae! Yo-my. Two and a half thousand years ago, the ancient but mighty Greeks fought here with the army of the Persian king Xerxes!

... and here I am, in a baseball cap and shorts, standing there, afraid to fall behind the air-conditioned bus.
A couple of days after the Meteor monasteries, we thought - Athos is much closer and you should definitely look at it. At least from afar. They boarded the boat and sailed.
And we sailed to the town of Ouranoupolis.

Wonderful place! In addition to tourists, pilgrims are also waiting here to receive a visa to Athos. IN Holy place without a visa! To qualify, you must (a) be non-female and (b) clearly state the purpose of your visit. The administration will consider your application on a first-come, first-served basis. In the meantime, you are waiting to touch the shrines, you can swim and sunbathe.

Or ride along the coast on a sailboat without sails. Yes, in Ouranoupolis I first learned that a seagull is a garbage bird.

We were not given a visa to Athos. Firstly, because we didn’t ask her, and secondly, it’s not interesting for me to watch without my beloved, but they don’t let me into the monastery with my beloved. Pichal(
And it started to rain...
Approximately so, I imagined Olympus in my childhood. It's not him, but still impressive.

But even more impressive is this monastery. Do you notice anything?

Right! This is an Orthodox monastery. Moreover, a Russian monastery. There are a lot of Russians on Athos! So much that they say, even a decree was issued to restrict the entry of Russian monks. Believe it or not, almost everyone on Athos spoke Russian. Until recently. Now it's not the same. Greeks diluted. But the Russian monastery is the richest and beautiful building on the peninsula. Everyone recognizes.

Of course, we were in Athens.

Honestly, Athens has everything. They lack only what I read about as a child. Therefore, I did not like Athens. Acropolis - yes! Athens is not.
- fur coats! Fur coats are not expensive! Guys, don't you need to? - It was a salesman who approached us right on the street. I wonder what in our faces betrays us with giblets? I wore a fur coat once in my life for three years. Artificial. Since then, I have been indifferent to fur coats. And the Greek understood this immediately, even though he spoke Russian to me.
We liked Thessaloniki more. Even despite the fact that we ended up in this city on Saturday and NOT A SINGLE store was working. Even the famous market did not work.
We remembered the words of the guide: the Greeks treat work as a necessary evil. They remembered and sat down in a cafe to drink frappuccino - in the heat of ice coffee with whipped cream foam - that's it)
By the way, this Orthodox church. The Turks added a minaret to it, but it is still Orthodox.

And this is the courtyard of a small church. The car was next to

Then we decided to swim in the sea and immediately found out that there is no beach in the city!
We began to ask people in pure Greek where they are splashing in the sea here and how can we get to this place? The most practical advice sounded like this: Take a taxi, say "beach" and you will be taken.
We got into a taxi, said as we were told, the taxi driver answered about kay, and we rushed off. When Ikea sailed past us, I realized that they were taking us to Halkidiki!
- stop! stop! stop! turn around! The beach is not needed!
- the taxi driver said about kay and drove in the opposite direction.
But now we know that there is no beach in Thessaloniki, but there is Ikea.
And the beach didn't leave us that day. We got to the hotel by bus.

When the porthole disappeared coastline the trident of Halkidiki, I realized that the saying about Greece is almost true. Greece has everything but us.

If you are going to go to Greece and do not want to be completely dependent on Russian speaking guide, then you need knowledge of English at least at an intermediate level. And if you want to try to travel around Greece on your own, visiting non-tourist places if you want to feel real Greece in the countryside and sea coast, then here you need at least entry level learn Greek and learn how to read at least the simplest inscriptions.

By the way, you probably remember some letters of the Greek language from school, from the lessons of physics or mathematics, where “alphas”, “nu”, “pi” and “omegas” denoted different physical and mathematical quantities.

Greek: alphabet, pronunciation

For a Russian-speaking person, Greek is quite simple to read, the eye gets used to writing letters quite easily, and the brain easily begins to put letters into words. The thing is that Slavic writing originates precisely from Byzantium, from the Greek language, so some letters are very similar to Russian ones. In addition, in Greece they both hear and write, so, knowing the alphabet and some simple words and phrases, you will already be able to communicate and read the inscriptions.

The Greek alphabet consists of 24 letters, the table below shows the names of the letters and how they are read:

The purpose of some establishments can be identified by identification pictures. Such pictures on shop windows or a sign indicate hairdressers, cafes, toilets. By the way, often in Greece the toilet is indicated in the international format - WC.

We will present the main phrases in Greek for oral communication immediately in the form of transcription (pronunciation).

In principle, both hotels and restaurants in Greece will understand you, even if you contact them on English language. And in many hotels there are Russian-speaking staff. But even if you learn at least a few words and phrases in Greek (greeting, thank you, please) and use them in communication with local residents you will give them great pleasure. And as a result, the already hospitable Greeks will become even more welcoming and friendly to you.
