But the military past of the city is not the only thing travelers come here for. A bit of history

Shlisselburg was founded at the beginning of the 14th century by Novgorod princes, descendants of Alexander Nevsky. Since the city was one of the main frontiers on the border with Sweden, a fortress was erected here, the importance of which in the history of the region cannot be overestimated. Initially, it was a wooden fortress, surrounded by powerful earthen ramparts, but after a couple of decades it was destroyed by fire, and the wooden buildings were replaced with stone ones. A century later, Oreshek underwent a major reconstruction, its area increased, and the fortress walls reached 15 m in height.

In the entire history of the existence of the fortress, it was taken only once, after an 8-month siege in the spring of 1612, it surrendered under the onslaught of the Swedish troops.

The Swedes established almost 100 years of dominance here and renamed the city Noteburg, which was translated as "Nut City" - due to the fact that the shape of the island on which the fortress stands resembles a walnut.
At the beginning of the 18th century, during Northern war Noteburg was liberated by the army of Peter I under his personal command and renamed Shlisselburg, that is, the “key-city”.

In the 18th century, the fortress lost its defensive significance and became one of the worst prisons in the country. Initially, the prisoners were kept here in damp dungeons, where not a single ray of light fell, for a long time they all sat exclusively in solitary confinement. Many could not stand such conditions and lost their minds.

At one time, in the fortress of Shlisselburg, this “Russian Bastille”, the princes Golitsyn and Dolgorukov were serving their sentences, Emperor Ivan VI came here as a child, who was deposed from the throne by the daughter of Peter I, and the wife of Peter himself was also here. Later, Narodnaya Volya, Social Revolutionaries and Decembrists came here en masse, and the brother of Vladimir Lenin was executed here.

For the first time, the release of the prisoners of the fortress prison took place after the revolutionary events of 1905, and after 1917 the prison was abolished and turned into a museum. Over the years of its existence, several buildings were completed here, in each of which constant dampness and ominous twilight reigned.

Nut during the Great Patriotic War

Nutty played an important role during the Great Patriotic War, it was he who became the main defensive point on the outskirts of besieged Leningrad and ensured the existence of the so-called "Road of Life", along which food was delivered to the city, and residents were evacuated from the city. The siege of Petrokrepost (as Shlisselburg was called in Soviet times) lasted more than a year, during which time, tens of thousands of human lives were saved by the heroic efforts of a very small number of soldiers who vowed to stand on the defensive to the end. And the defenders of the city almost all died.

Subsequently, it was decided not to carry out the reconstruction of the fortress, but only to erect numerous memorials in it and throughout the entire "Road of Life". Everyone who has been here unanimously agrees that this is the most impressive and grandiose Museum of the Great Patriotic War, making a truly indelible impression.

Transport

Shlisselburg is a small town in which less than 15 thousand people live, therefore transport infrastructure not developed here. They walk Shuttle Buses, but tourists prefer to travel on foot or by taxi.

You can call a car by phone, the cost of the trip starts from 100 RUB.

Also in the city there is a water crossing to the fortress "Oreshek". The pier is located on final stop bus number 575, boats leave every 10-15 minutes. The fare is 150 RUB one way, children under 7 ride for free.

Shlisselburg Hotels

There are several three-star hotels in the city, the average price per night in which is 1800 RUB. But you can also find a more affordable offer: for example, a double room in the Starhouse mini-hotel costs 1,500 RUB for two. This is one of the most inexpensive, since there are no hostels in the city. You can stay at the Petrovskaya Hotel, but the price is higher here: a standard double room is 2500 RUB for two per day.

Also in Shlisselburg there are several guest houses right on the shore of Lake Ladoga. Their main advantage is a picturesque view from the rooms and the possibility of outdoor recreation. The cost of living is about 3000 RUB per house.

Cafes and restaurants in Shlisselburg

Gradually, in Shlisselburg, the number of restaurants offering classic European menu. Most of them are focused on central square and close to key attractions. The average check for dinner with alcohol per person is 700 RUB.

Instead of fast food, stalls with confectionery and fresh pastries are placed on the streets of Shlisselburg. The assortment is impressive: rich buns, fragrant cheesecakes, pies with all kinds of fillings. As a drink, you can order tea or take coffee beans with you. The cost of a snack is 200 RUB.

Attractions and excursions

Today Shlisselburg - provincial town, which can be walked up and down in less than two hours, and where no more than 12 thousand inhabitants live. There are no big ones here. shopping centers, nor prosperous enterprises, even Shipyard, which once provided the city with a consistently high standard of living, is derelict.

But it has its own charm: the old Town Square, quiet, slightly dilapidated streets, slightly careless boat moorings: picturesque landscapes of the majestically Lake Ladoga, unique old canals, designed not only to connect port Shlisselburg with other cities, but also to protect it from sometimes turbulent lake waters.

The town beckons to itself with its ancient fortress, impregnable in the face of the trends of modern times and still striking with its high walls and towers, which have seen a lot in their lifetime, as well as exciting walks on simple wooden boats along the expanse of the vast lake. This is an unusually picturesque area, where, by the way, the Neva River originates.

With the chapel of the Kazan Icon Mother of God tied interesting story. During the Russian-Swedish wars, when the enemy captured the fortress, Russian soldiers decided to save the miraculous Face of the Mother of God, revered for centuries. They walled it up in a wall, where it was kept for more than a century, until the fortress again passed into the reign of the Russian emperor.

Another visited place in Shlisselburg is the Museum under open sky, the exposition of which is made up of real ship guns.

Weather

The climate in this part of Russia is moderate, with mild, quite warm winter and cool summers. But due to the proximity of Lake Ladoga, there is often a strong gusty wind in the city, bringing rain and snow. Therefore, the weather here is unpredictable, it is better to take waterproof shoes and raincoats on a trip.

The Leningrad region is famous for its ancient fortresses: in Staraya Ladoga, Koporye, Ivangorod, Priozersk and Vyborg - these cities are invariably very popular among St. Petersburg residents and guests of our city. The Oreshek fortress stands apart - firstly, it is located very close to the city, in the place where the Neva flows from Lake Ladoga, and secondly, the fortress is located on the island, which is called Orekhovy, and you just can’t get into it . Having visited all the other places several times, we finally decided to make a trip to the Oreshek fortress, which I want to talk about today.

Road

Murmansk highway - popular destination, and when planning a trip to Shlisselburg, one should take into account possible difficulties on the road. It can be traffic jams, for example, on Friday evening, when the townspeople tend to leave the dusty city for their country estates, the same can be said about Sunday evening, when the same cheerful company will strive to return back to the city. It can also be road work, as was the case in our case - due to the repair of the road, the traffic jam stretched for several kilometers in the Razmetelevo area.

From alternatives there are buses that can just as easily get stuck in a traffic jam on a par with other cars. Buses leave from the metro station Ulitsa Dybenko and go along the Murmansk highway, there is also an alternative bus route, on the left bank of the Neva, it is about an hour longer due to a large number stops, these buses depart from Proletarskaya and Rybatskoye metro stations.

But we are going to road trip, therefore, having escaped from the traffic jam onto a straight and even highway with fresh asphalt, we turn on fifth gear and cheerfully drive to the bridge across the Neva, where we keep in the right lane, so that immediately after the bridge, follow the sign to the right, under the bridge and to Shlisselburg. Attention! Those who go for the first time, carefully follow the signs so as not to go to Kirovsk or back to St. Petersburg.

Further, all the time we go along main road, and, having passed along a narrow-narrow bridge, we turn left, to the pier. The landmark is a monument to Peter I, because it was Peter I who conquered the fortress from the Swedes, and it was in 1702, then there was no St. Petersburg either. Having studied the map in advance and remembering the way, it is almost impossible to get lost. It remains only to find a place and park the car, we did not have any difficulties with this.

Fortress Oreshek

The Oreshek Fortress is located on the Orekhovy Island, so further we will have to cross the water. There is a stall on the pier that sells round-trip tickets, and an ice cream seller is on duty nearby. Ice cream is an interesting thing: it, unlike hot pies, is seasonal - in the summer in the heat, ice cream is worth its weight in gold, well, or, for sure, silver. Hot cakes are worth their weight in gold in all other seasons. It is better to separate at the pier - one takes a queue for the steamer, the other at this time buys tickets and ice cream.

The Oreshek Fortress Museum is open daily, from May 1 to October 31. The price of tickets for the boat may change over time, during our visit it was 250 rubles for adults and 200 rubles for beneficiaries, but for children under 7 years old you don’t need to buy a ticket, just buy ice cream. large, very capital letters there was a notice written on the wall that said the price of a round trip ticket was indicated, apparently the workers were tired of repeating the answer to the same question.

Under this announcement, another, smaller one was hung, in which they warned that it would be necessary to pay an additional fee for the excursion on the spot, so another 180 rubles had to be prepared, students and pensioners would enter the fortress for 80 rubles. As we understood, no one will be able to enter the fortress for free, except perhaps for those children under 7 years old who will already have time to finish their ice cream by that time. For what reason it was necessary to arrange ticket sales in two places and collect two queues - it is not clear. Job creation?

It's the middle of June, moreover, a clear Saturday day - the most popular tourist time - so there was a decent queue for the steamboat. But you should not be afraid of a long line - two steamboats continuously run back and forth, famously transporting this rather big stream of tourists. It is possible that on weekdays the traffic of steamers will not be so intensive. We stood for 15 minutes, no more.

The most trump places are on the open deck, their tourists occupy in the first place, all the rest are placed in the closed part of the steamer - it's hot, cramped and stuffy there, and besides, it's scary out of habit, since you are almost flush with the water level.

Arriving at the place and paying for the tour, we immediately fell behind this very tour and just walked around the island on our own. Taught by the bitter experience of bans in other places, I was very afraid for my tripod, but it turned out that on that day no one cared about me and my tripod, and I gladly shot many HDR series without disturbing anyone and the camera from the tripod without filming at all.

At the entrance to the fortress

Since the 18th century, the Oreshek fortress has been used as a political prison, so, as we understand, the guide’s story is mainly about the prison. Once in the gloomy building of the prison, we immediately left it - we didn’t want to shoot. Although many enjoyed posing against the backdrop of solitary cells, we found this activity of little interest. So I don't have a photo of the prison building.

During the Great Patriotic War, the city of Shlisselburg was occupied and destroyed, at the same time, the fortress itself held a heroic defense for 500 days, preventing the Nazis from crossing to the right bank of the Neva. On September 25, 1941, in the area of the city, the ships of the Ladoga military flotilla landed and killed the Shlisselburg landing. On January 18, 1943, the city was liberated by the 67th Army of the Leningrad Front during an operation called Iskra.

In the walls old church now a memorial

The most interesting thing in the Oreshek fortress is on the second floor, where a steep, steep staircase leads to the right of the entrance. Upstairs is very beautiful, we spent about an hour there, at least. Beautiful views open in all directions, the light from the windows creates a very unusual multi-colored effect on the floor, here you can shoot many interesting portraits and landscapes. I even somehow managed to catch the moment when there were no people in the frame - I still don’t understand how it happened, since the flow of tourists that day was huge.

Schematic map. Many of the depicted objects are not on it today

Right stairs up

The steps are very steep.

Here the wall makes a 90 degree turn, perfect place for portraits

The mechanism that raises the metal fence at the entrance to the fortress

Unlike the Staraya Ladoga or Koporskaya fortresses, you can walk around the Oreshek fortress behind the fortress walls, bypassing it around. We really liked the view with the tractor and the destroyed modern building, which was in the foreground in front of the destroyed old building fortresses.

Where to have lunch?

Walk on fresh air on the island, blown by the Ladoga winds, it helps to work up a good appetite, and on the pier there is just a large poster hanging on which it says how to get to the dining room. It’s different for anyone, but for me personally, with the word “restaurant”, the imagination draws an expensive interior, waiters in white aprons and an astronomical bill, with the word “cafe” you imagine a small room and tea and buns, but the word “dining room” is completely unambiguous and uncompromising promises a hot home-cooked lunch reasonable price. Therefore, we got into the car and drove 500 meters, turning onto the street, as indicated in the ad, and ended up in front of a standard two-story canteen building, which I want to talk about separately.

A large spacious room on the second floor, even rows of tables covered with white tablecloths, square tiles on the floor, light twilight created by curtains on large windows throughout the wall, and no one! We were alone in the dining room, and this is the most that is lunch time on a hot Saturday afternoon. “Yur ae woman aim a man” came softly from the speakers, and we gladly plunged into such a beloved and almost forgotten atmosphere of the factory and student canteens of the 1980s. Agree, “Highway to Hell” or “Big Gun” would sound completely out of place here.

The saleswoman, while there was no one, did not waste time - I noticed a book with the inscription “White Nights” on the cover - Fyodor Mikhailovich must be known and loved, especially since those same White Nights are standing in the yard. With a habitual movement, we take the trays and put them on the rails, in front of us huge selection dishes! The same sour cream in a glass, the same boiled potatoes with dill, the same cold borscht, vegetable salad, and so on and so on, in a word, the real favorite canteen food! I can’t contain my emotions, because our two trays barely contained everything that we ordered and for which we ended up paying about 400 rubles for two. Friends, I don’t understand where such prices come from, but if you are in Shlisselburg, go to the dining room (I don’t remember the name, there is a map on the pier) - you won’t regret it.

After plunging into the atmosphere of the 1980s, we had the feeling that time had stopped in Shlisselburg. Small houses, playgrounds, someone drying clothes on a rope, grandmothers on benches - everything is so green, old and familiar from childhood, as if it were our grandmothers sitting on the benches, and we are playing in the sandbox and swinging up and down on a swing , up and down, up and down ... On the way to the bridge you can stop and admire the Neva, on the right in the direction of the Murmansk highway there are many beautiful places for parking.

We traveled by car from St. Petersburg in the afternoon on a day off. Of course they got stuck. The journey took about 1.5 hours. But we do not regret the loss of "holiday" time, the place is simply amazing! There are a lot of emotions and photos left.

How to get to the fortress Oreshek (Shlisselburg)

By car : from St. Petersburg along the R-21 highway, after the Ladoga bridge, turn right, then follow the sign for Shlisselburg. The path is about 33 km from the Ring Road. There is a small free car park at the pier.

On transport: from the metro station "Ulitsa Dybenko", then by bus. Travel 70 rubles. Travel time is about an hour.

The Oreshek fortress itself is located on Orekhovy Island, where boats regularly go. The fare is 250 rubles (round trip). The swim is not long at all, about 10 minutes.

Entrance to the fortress - 200 rubles per person (already with a tour). The last group seems to be at 16-30 (there were in May).

And now some tips:

The first thing that comes to mind when you look at Lake Ladoga is "isn't this the sea?" Water, water, you can't see where it ends. No wonder it is the largest freshwater lake in Europe! Very impressive.

The boat moves quietly, slowly. You can take plenty of photos and videos.

It was very cold in May, we all got cold. And they walked with red noses. If not for this circumstance, we would have stayed in the fortress until closing. In fact, they fled to warm themselves after 1.5 hours.

The history of the place is very rich. Starting from the Novgorod principality and ending with the Second World War.

Nut is an important point for the Russian land, which is why for many centuries there were wars and battles, as a result of which the fortress passed from hand to hand. What can I say, "The key is the city", such geography.

Outside, the walls look gigantic and invincible.

But as soon as you go inside, you realize that there are no invulnerable buildings for the bomb. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, much was destroyed.

We were very lucky with the tour guide. A pleasant woman who spoke smoothly and expressively (like a registrar in the registry office)

She told about everything, how the fortress was defensive, how it became a prison for political prisoners (Decembrists, Narodnaya Volya, disgraced relatives of rulers, terrorists, fighters against the regime).

About terrible torture by loneliness, hunger, cold or heat. And the most terrible - silence, when even the guards walked in soft slippers so that no sounds came from outside.

About executions, fire. Not even without a tragic love story.

Much, of course, was talked about the war with the Nazis. After all, the "heart" of the island is a complex of monuments and slabs in memory of the defense of the Motherland.

In the place where the Neva River originates from Lake Ladoga, stands invincible Shlisselburg fortress . Among the people, she received a simpler and more concise nickname - Oreshek fortress . The popular name is explained simply: the fortress is located on Orekhovy Island.

The citadel had an extremely important strategic importance. This explains the origin of the ancient fortress walls that surround Oreshek. There are no equal to these walls in Russia.

Fortress over the yearsconverted into an analogue of the Russian Alcatraz.

For a long time there was a prison for especially important criminals, as well as for prisoners sentenced to death. During the Great Patriotic War, the fortress again turned intoimportant defensive point. Thanks to the heroism of the soldiers who stood here to death, the famous"The road of life", the last chance for salvation for the inhabitants besieged Leningrad. In memory of the soldiers, the oath of all the fighters of the fortress, carved on iron, was preserved here, which ends with the symbolic words: "... we will stand to the end."

History of the fortress

Year of foundationOreshek fortress is considered to be1323 . It is to this time thatthe first mention of the fortress in chronicles. Shlisselburg was built in order to define and protect the borders of the Novgorod principality with Sweden. The chronicle says that in 1323 between Sweden and the Novgorod principality concludedOrekhovets world, which will be protected impregnable fortress Nut.

Soon the principality of Novgorod became part of Moscow. Until the 17th century, Oreshek was the last frontier, an outpost separating Sweden from the Moscow principality. Gradually, the impregnable fortress turned into an important center of trade.
