It's famous balneological resort in the Khostinsky district of Greater Sochi.

It is worth coming here not only for the sake of water treatment, but also just for a walk, to see the interesting architecture and sights of Matsesta.

I liked Matsesta. splendid nature, a lot of greenery. Although, of course, everywhere there is a very strong smell of hydrogen sulfide. You won't get used to this very specific smell.

It is interesting that hydrogen sulfide begins to smell (yes, frankly speaking, it smells very strongly!) Even at the entrance to Matsesta. This smell is especially concentrated in the car tunnel to Matsesta - you certainly can't go wrong with the direction. 🙂

A little about Matsesta: where does the name and history come from

What to see in Matsesta - more on that later. In the meantime, let's find out what, in fact, it is and why the resort is so popular.

Matsesta is the name of both the village (now a microdistrict) and the river that flows through it. It is also the name of a legendary girl.

The Matsesta River is not very big, but picturesque. It flows into the Black Sea. Its length is 18 kilometers. On one of the tributaries flow the most beautiful - be sure to visit them.

Matsesta river

The word “Matsesta” comes from the Ubykh (Ubykhs are a people related to the Adygs and Abkhazians) phrase “fire water”. Because from the Matsesta hydrogen sulfide water, the skin turns red, as if burned.

According to legend, Matsesta was the name of a girl who descended into the mysterious dungeons and, having paid for it with her life, got healing water for seriously ill parents.

True, in other versions of the legends, the girl survived, which I like more. It is sad when children are left without parents. But it's even sadder when parents lose their children...

The image of the legendary bold beauty is embodied in sculptural composition at the entrance to Matsesta.

The fame of Matsesta as a resort began in 1910. It was from here, from a small village, that the glory of the Sochi resort came. It is no coincidence that in the center of the coat of arms and flag of Sochi there is an image of the Matsesta springs (a silver bowl with fiery water), the main attraction of Matsesta.

Coat of arms of Sochi with the image of the Matsesta springs in the center

Flag of Sochi with the image of Matsesta springs in the center

In 1926, Stalin was successfully treated here, and after that he advised the resort to his party comrades-in-arms. At that time it was best recommendation. As a result, Sochi has become the most popular all-Union resort.

In the 1930s, many buildings were built here, which are now architectural monuments. The most famous sights of Matsesta: hydropathic, springs and Stalin's Dacha. Frankly speaking, it is thanks to Stalin that there is something to see in Matsesta even today. All the best appeared there with him.

Matsesta is divided into 2 main parts: Old and New. The main street is Cheltenham Alley, which stretches almost through the entire neighborhood.

The Novaya Matsesta area is closer to the coast. The health path begins there, and there you can also see the sculpture "Matsesta" and Stalin's Dacha.

In Staraya Matsesta, you can admire the building of the balneological clinic and the springs of healing water.

Even an absolutely healthy person (which I wish you with all my heart), who is not interested in treatment, has something to see in Matsesta. After all, despite the healing glory of the microdistrict, it is not at all necessary to come here for treatment. There is plenty to do here without it.

Sights of Matsesta

Everyone can make their own list of what to see in Matsesta, depending on their preferences. But the most interesting sights of Matsesta must be seen.

There are not so many of them, and in a couple of days you can see everything that is in the village itself. Plus, another 2-3 days will be needed to explore the most interesting things in the area.

View of Matsesta from the Matsesta viaduct

So, what to see in Matsesta?

1. If you drive from the center of Sochi by car or bus, you will be the first to see the recognizable sculpture of a girl "Matsesta". It is located on the corner of Kurortny Avenue and Cheltenham Alley (New Matsesta), at the coordinates: N43.545558, E39.789137.

Sculptural composition "Matsesta"

The sculptural composition was created from sandstone in 1968. The statue of the legendary girl seems to have merged with the mountain.

From highway the sculpture can be reached by stairs. In front of the sculpture is a small fountain, a symbol of the healing waters of Matsesta.

2. If you are traveling from the center by train, then you will be the first to see an architectural monument of regional significance next to the railway station - rotunda of Matsesta port point(Marine Station). She is pretty unusual architecture. Created by architect S.I. Voropaev in 1936

3. One of the main attractions of Matsesta is the building of the Matsesta hydropathic(bathroom building No. 4). You can't tell from the outside that this is a hospital. Its facade is decorated with a portico with columns and rather resembles an ancient temple or some kind of theater. The building was built in 1940 in the Stalinist Empire style.

The project was created by architect Alexander Golubev. And it was built on the very spot where the first balneary, founded by Podgursky, once stood.

Hydropathic in Matsesta

Many have been treated here. famous people: Voroshilov, Budyonny, Brezhnev, Khrushchev and, of course, Stalin, whose dacha was in Matsesta.

It is possible not only to admire the luxurious building, but also to undergo a course of treatment with local waters. For this, it is not necessary to come here on a ticket. You can purchase the necessary procedures by simply going to the reception of the clinic.

What to bring from Matsesta

Tourists usually take away souvenirs as a keepsake. In Matsesta, the most popular souvenirs are potteries - special drinking mugs for drinking mineral water and magnets(by the way, they are very beautiful and inexpensive here, unlike mugs - they cost 400 rubles, the magnet is only 40-60).

But such souvenirs are quite commonplace, unless, of course, you collect a collection of mugs or magnets from travel.

- that will be a great gift for friends and relatives! Matsesta tea has repeatedly received prizes. Pay attention to tips tea (from unblown buds of a tea bush) - such tea is a huge rarity. And he's very helpful.

Large-leaf long leaf tea is also good. I prefer green.

For my taste, maybe you should not be guided, because I like a tart rich taste and I like Krasnodar tea much more than other northern teas (the same English, Georgian or Azerbaijani).

It costs "Matsesta tea" in the company store about 200 rubles per 100 grams. The same tea in a gift box costs 319 rubles, but the main thing in tea is not the packaging.

I don't drink tea bags, so I can't comment on that.

Cosmetics "Matsesta" With healing mud and herbs: soap and all sorts of balms and shampoos for hair, dandruff and so on. Organic cosmetics, without any chemicals. A bottle of 250 ml costs from 410-450 rubles. A piece of soap - 250 r. By the way, they are made not in Matsesta itself, but in the Mountain Soap Factory in Krasnaya Polyana. Therefore, it is called "Krasnopolyanskaya cosmetics".

Balm "Matsesta"

We also always deliver from Sochi feijoa. Finely chop the berries and mix with honey - vitamins will be all winter, and very tasty!

Feijoa - an autumn delicacy

Well, more figs, hazelnuts… But these are not purely Matsesta souvenirs, just like feijoa, by the way.

From unusual souvenirs you can bring more Matsesta paintings sold by local artists. Some of the paintings are very beautiful and will be a worthy decoration of the interior.

"Pier Matsesta". Artist Andrey Fomin

By the way, paintings can be ordered without coming to Matsesta, on the artist's website: artfomsochi.ru. The price of a copy of the painting you like is from 25 thousand rubles.

To go or not to go to Matsesta?

Is it interesting in Matsesta? Is it worth going there? Definitely yes! Here you can get treated, go to interesting excursions, admire beautiful nature Caucasus.

We have been to Matsesta only for tourism purposes, we have not been treated there. They say it's not cheap, but it's worth it. But even if you do not need to be treated, it will still be interesting to see everything described in my article.

So, if you are going to Matsesta, then the list of what to see in Matsesta is in front of you.
And lower - interactive map, which can be moved and enlarged. And it says what to see in Matsesta.

Attractions of Matsesta - map

Advantages of Matsesta: interesting, beautiful, wonderful nature. Rest in Matsesta is much calmer and more serene than in the Central region.

Flaws: few free places to visit. In fact, apart from the health path, there are no free places at all, so get your wallets ready. Even for a few minutes to stare at the hydrogen sulfide sources, they take money.

The legendary Failure, described in the brilliant work of Ilf and Petrov, where Ostap Bender took money from those who wanted to look at the source of hydrogen sulfide water, is resting. By the way, you can watch the Failure in Pyatigorsk absolutely free of charge and as much as you want.

Also, the disadvantages include a strong smell of hydrogen sulfide. But you get used to it (although not immediately).

If you are limited in time, do not have a whole week to explore the beauties, and choose what to see in Matsesta, I advise you first of all three objects: springs, a hydropathic center and Stalin's Dacha.

Matsesta is a microdistrict of Sochi, located in the Khostinsky district, in the valley of the Matsesta River. Matsesta is known primarily as a medicinal, resort place. This resort is the largest medical complex in our country, founded in 1902 on therapeutic hydrogen sulfide sources. The healing properties of Matsesta lie in the deposit of hydrogen sulfide springs that come to the surface of the Matsesta, Agura and Khosta rivers. Main healing factor Matsesta is hydrogen sulfide. That is why every year hundreds of tourists come to Matsesta who want to improve their health or just relax.

There are many versions of the origin of the name of this resort area. According to one of the hypotheses, Matsesta (Matsipsta) is translated from the Abkhazian language as "the gorge of Matsba". The Matsbovy people once lived in these surroundings. There is another version of the translation from the Adyghe language, which means "burning water". This name was given to the healing spring, not because of its high temperature, but because of the reddening of the skin caused by the spring. In addition to scientific theories and hypotheses, there are also myths. The Circassians had a legend about a girl named Matsesta, who went underground and returned from the bowels of the earth in the form healing spring. The sculpture of this girl is the main symbol and attraction of Matsesta.

Matsesta is divided into districts: New Matsesta, Middle Matsesta, Old Matsesta. In Matsesta there is the main street- Cheltenham Alley, passing through all these areas located in the river valley. New Matsesta is located closest to the sea, and in Staraya Matsesta there are sources of hydrogen sulfide water and a clinic.

Matsesta is famous not only for its medicinal properties, but also for its sights. Among them:

Stalin's dacha, built in 1937 according to the project of Miron Merzhanov. Now it is a museum that stores Stalin's personal belongings.

Matsesta viaduct (bridge over the Matsesta River), built in 1936-1938. designed by architects V. A. Schuko and V. G. Gelfreikh.

Old Matsesta, which houses hydrogen sulfide springs and a monumental hydropathic building, reminiscent of an ancient temple

The sculptural composition of Matsesta, created in 1968 by the sculptor I. Ya. Gusleva and the architect E. A. Serdyukov. The monument is presented in the form of a figure of a girl carved from local natural stone. This sculpture is a symbol of Matsesta, which is the embodiment of a local legend.

Among the entertainment of Matsesta, one can single out an aquarium with various marine life; pebble beach, a balneological resort providing various medical services; cafe "Ochag", "Patskha-Guria", etc.

Stalin played the most important role in the development of Matsesta. He often rested here, was treated and recommended this resort more than once. It was then that sanatorium No. 7 appeared in Matsesta. master plan development of the resort plays a significant role. In the 1930s, many new buildings and hydropathic clinics were built here, each of which is an architectural monument.

The Matsesta resort gained its fame due to the possibility of healing the body and preventing diseases. Despite the fact that Matsesta is located almost next to Sochi, the tourism sector is not so developed here.

There are no luxury hotels, no holiday homes, no wide range of entertainment. For impressions and luxury you need to go to Sochi and others big cities. The village of Matsesta is focused on quiet rest and treatment. Hydrogen sulfide sources and sanatorium treatment are the most best opportunities in the region.

Fresh air, natural food, a calm and measured pace of life contribute to the restoration of health at the physical level and emotional relaxation. Every year the village receives thousands of people who come here to improve their health and escape from the hustle and bustle.

Matsesta what is it

On the territory of the village there are hydropathic clinics, boarding houses and sanatoriums. In total, there are about 80 establishments with services oriented towards health resorts. There are hotels where you can rent a room for a simple vacation.

In some institutions there are conditions for work and negotiations. For the adventurous, there are guided tours and some options. extreme recreation. There is an opportunity to see the sights of neighboring regions and lie down on the beach.

The beaches in Matsesta need to be given special attention. If you want to spend free time by the sea, you need to look for housing within its proximity. The beach in Matsesta is well-maintained and is located next to the balneological center. The surface of the territory is pebbles, it is clean here. There are rides boat station, rescue service and necessary amenities.

There are cafes and restaurants on the shore where you can have a bite to eat and taste dishes of the author's cuisine. Serious scope beach activities not here, but you can always have a good time and get a bronze tan.

Each boarding house or sanatorium of the village has its own beach, where guests of the institution rest. If you go to rest in Matsesta without the sea, you definitely won’t stay.

Matsesta attractions and entertainment

Matsesta is located near Sochi. Adventure lovers can go on an excursion to the surroundings or explore the village. Bright impressions and interesting leisure are provided to you.

The attraction is located next to the Agur River. An excursion here can be combined with a walk to the Agur waterfalls. The rocks are approximately 200 meters high and are made of limestone.

At the very top there is a sculpture of Prometheus. There is a legend that it was here that he was imprisoned and served his sentence for bringing fire to people. You can get here by walking along the path near the Agur waterfalls or moving from the old Matsesta.

If you ask for directions, they will clearly explain to you how to get to the rocks. You can go here with or without a guide. In any case, the walk will be interesting. Near the Eagle Rocks, beautiful photos are obtained.

Local nature, reliefs of stones and sunny weather contribute to an interesting photoshoot. Take with you drinking water, on the way you will want to drink.

There is a tea factory in Matsesta, which has been operating since 1947. During this time, many events have happened to the enterprise and it is only now resuming its work in full.

You will see about 180 hectares of tea plantations. You will learn how to choose high-quality green and black tea, you will be able to see how it is made and what technique is used.

There is an opportunity to try different types tea and buy the most the best option for yourself or as a souvenir for a loved one. Here you can buy oil paintings of Matsesta, taste local honey.

It is worth allocating a whole day for the excursion in order to relax comfortably.

Conventionally, Matsesta can be divided into two parts: New and old Matsesta. Entertainment, main infrastructure located in New Matsesta. If you are interested in nature, history, then it is better to rent a house in Staraya Matsesta.

You can call it another way to have a good time. If you are going on vacation with children, then a family trip to the zoo makes sense. Here you can see marine inhabitants and many animals that live on an area of 1000 square meters.

Here you can see the Nile crocodile and hippopotamus from Africa, you will never meet them in wildlife. The kairan lives next to these animals. You can see piranhas, penguins, many kinds of fish.

It will be interesting to spend time here, both for children and adults. Most of the inhabitants of the zoo, we see only on TV in programs about animals. Walking next to them will be more than interesting and informative.

Such walks broaden the horizons, and it becomes clear that the world consists not only of concrete and glass.

If this is not enough, you can always go to Sochi, the city is located 8 kilometers from the village. Here the choice of entertainment and attractions is much richer.

Matsesta is famous for what

The village gained its popularity due to the sources of hydrogen sulfide water, which are abundant in the region. If we literally translate the word Matsesta from the Adyghe language, we get fire water.

It is not surprising that the village was named that way. Try immersing your foot or hand in the water of the source and after a while it will turn red. This is due to the fact that hydrogen sulfide began to affect the skin.
