Recent excavations have revealed an ancient necropolis.

Sicily... strange Sicily is amazing hospitality and cordiality, beautiful nature and unusual original culture with a unique history. Sicily is a land of contrasts, it has been the center of the universe for centuries. Its geographical position has made the island a meeting place for Mediterranean civilizations, a bridge between Europe and Africa. Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans ... some succeeded others or coexisted together, destroyed, created. And there is something to see in Sicily.

Monuments of the Greek period are such that you will not find in Greece itself: the Norman baroque and Byzantine mosaics amaze the imagination, the riot of greenery and flowers is stunning, and Sicilian cuisine capable of striking. Good in Sicily and the sea: clean, calm, warm, with excellent sandy beaches. The swimming season here lasts until mid-November. By this time the island is empty. The noisy streets of the resort towns subside and the patriarchal calm, so characteristic of the locals, reigns again.

And only the surprised exclamations of the tourists, amazed unique monuments of history, architecture and amazing nature of this center of the universe. Sardinia island

"Sandaliotis" was the name given to this island by the ancient Greeks. And, indeed, its shape resembles the shape of a sandal, and the locals are still sure that it was here that the Lord set foot in the primordial ocean when He first descended to Earth. So the trace in the sea remained. Is this so, isn't it ... but on earth. One of the stunning mysteries is the ancient history of this island.

At a time when the inhabitants of Europe were in a state of wild barbarism, a highly developed civilization existed here, it left behind the ruins of megalithic structures, the so-called nuraghi, scattered throughout Sardinia. But the sea has brought the greatest popularity to Sardinia. The sea off the coast of the island and the beaches are considered the most beautiful in Italy. It seems that in its air and colors, some crazy artist mixed the most fantastic shades of blue and green on his palette. A boat frozen on the sea surface seems unnaturally hovering above the seabed, the sand of the beaches seems to be placers of gold, and the coastal rocks look like frozen fabulous animals.

This is a paradise for diving enthusiasts: the warm and gentle sea off the coast of the island is considered the standard of transparency, and the animal world is unique, just like this amazing island itself is unique in the very middle of the Mediterranean Sea, halfway between Europe and Africa.

Possible excursions: on the southwest coast - a panoramic view of the city of Cagliari; to the coral island of Carlo Forte (limitless opportunities for scuba diving); to the city of Barrumini (famous "nuraghi" - settlements of prehistoric people); to the archaeological city of Nora; in the grottoes (the most deep caves in the world); folklore evening in a typical Sardinian tavern; on the Costa Smeralda - the Maddalena archipelago, Corsica, the city of Alghero, the Grottoes of Neptune with an underground lake; as well as: excursions on horseback, on boats and helicopters.

Rome, of course, is not a seaside city, but nearby you can find many interesting places from the point of view of a beach holiday. Moreover, if you are going to Rome in the summer, especially in July or August, then it makes sense to think about whether it is worth staying in the city for a long time. It is hot in Rome in summer, and it is much more pleasant to spend the daytime by the sea than in the hot streets and squares of the Italian capital.

However, if you still decide to live in Rome, or if you are planning a trip for less hot months and just want to get out of Rome for a day to wander along the sea and breathe in the salty air, then there is also more than one suitable place.

This article is devoted to seaside resorts in the immediate vicinity of Rome. Next, we consider the most interesting directions in our opinion. At the same time, we will focus mainly on the possibilities of public transport (primarily by rail - see www.trenitalia.com).

So, on the sea from Rome: where to go, how to get there, where to settle, etc. and so on.

The closest beaches to Rome are in the town Lido di Ostia(Lido di Ostia). In fact, this is a suburb of Rome, and the railway line connecting Lido with the capital is, in fact, a continuation of the Roman metro. You can get here by Roma Lido train from the Porta San Paolo railway station, connected to the Piramide metro station (see diagram). It's only half an hour drive. In addition, we note that Lido di Ostia is located near Fiumicino Airport, from where you can get to Lido by Cotral bus. This is the question of summer trips to Rome. It is quite possible to stay in Lido - closer to the sea and beaches - and from there go to Rome. True, there are not so many accommodation options, and therefore the issue of booking should be taken care of in advance, while there is plenty to choose from. Pay attention, for example, to Hotel La Scaletta and Hotel Ping Pong, located in the center of resort life, or to a small but very nice guest house Il Mare Di Roma, a little away from the center.

Despite all of the above, people usually come to the Lido for a day from Rome to swim, sunbathe and return back. The beaches here are sandy and maintained in decent condition throughout the swimming season. Paid sites predominate, but there are also free ones. The sea near the coast is shallow, which attracts families with small children, but there are also entertainment for young people. Nightlife in Lido di Ostia has a place to be - there are beach bars and discos (see www.discotecheostia.it), although of course this is not Ibiza for you.

If you need a place for a relaxing beach holiday and you do not plan to travel to Rome every day, then do not rush to make a choice in favor of the Lido. It makes sense to look south and look at places like Anzio(Anzio) And Nettuno(Nettuno), which can be reached by Trenitalia trains (about an hour from Rome). This is practically one whole - you can walk from one town to another, and both make a rather pleasant impression, and there are sights here. In other words, you will always have the opportunity to diversify a lazy beach holiday with walks around the neighborhood. And the sea here is cleaner than in Lido di Ostia, however, it is just as shallow, which is good for children, but it is unlikely that those who like to swim in the depths will like it.

In Anzio and Nettuno, mostly locals rest. Therefore, there are relatively few hotels here. As an option, you can consider Hotel Riviera (Anzio) or Astura Palace Hotel (Nettuno). There are also small guest houses and apartments: see, for example, Casa Vacanze Anzio Centro in Anzio and Appartamento Romana in Nettuno.

However, the most interesting resorts in our opinion are located further south. This - San Felice Circeo, Terracina, Sperlonga and Gaeta.

The downside is that it is more difficult to get here by rail. Although, if the budget allows, you can always order a direct transfer from the airport (see, for example) or rent a car (see). After all, there are buses. For example, Rome's Laurentina bus station offers direct connections to Terracina and San Felice Circeo (hereinafter, see the Cotral route planner). The journey takes just over two hours. In Terracina you can take a bus to Sperlonga and Gaeta. Another way to get to Terracina is to first take the train to Monte San Biagio and then take a bus to Terracina. In short, it is much more convenient to go in this direction by car, especially since there are a lot of interesting things in the vicinity and, again, you will need a car to see all this.

The busiest place among the listed - Terracina(Terracina). The beaches here are sandy, long and mostly paid, but there are also free sections. The entrance to the water is gentle, but not far to the depth. Historical Center the city is very interesting. There is where to walk - both in Terracina and in the immediate vicinity (you can, for example, climb the mountain to the temple of Jupiter). Wonderful waterfront. Lots of playgrounds. Beach discos. Etc. and so on. In a word, Terracina allows you to organize a holiday for every taste. And a wallet, since the accommodation options here are different: from the expensive Grand Hotel L "Approdo to quite budget guest houses like Il Giardino Di Adriana B&B and numerous apartments.

San Felice Circeo(San Felice Circeo) a much calmer and more secluded place, but the beaches here are at least as good as in Terracina. And the nature around is amazing, since this is actually the territory of the national natural park (see parcocirceo.it), as, by the way, and Sabaudia(Sabaudia), located on the other side of Cape Circeo (also perfect place for a quiet beach holiday). In San Felice Circeo, you should pay attention, for example, to Hotel Capo Circeo, and in Sabaudia, to Hotel Oasi Di Kufra.

Good in terms of beaches and Sperlonga(Sperlonga), and the atmosphere here, so to speak, is more intimate. The historic center of the city has climbed a rock, its streets are intricately intertwined, and snow-white houses are piled on top of each other. There are beaches on both sides of the cliff: fine golden sand, clear sea and picturesque views of the Old city- beauty! Moreover, Sperlonga has hotels located right on the seafront, which further enhances the impression: see, for example, Albergo La Sirenella and Hotel Aurora. True, the cost of living in such hotels is quite high. Cheaper hotels like Elaia Garden Hotellocated a little further from the beaches (5-10 minutes walk). Families with children and car travelers should also pay attention to the Residence Le Spiagge apartment complex.

Finally, Gaeta(Gaeta). This is perhaps the cheapest resort when compared with Sperlonga, Terracina and San Felice Circeo. Meanwhile, the beaches here are just as good, there is also where to walk and what to see (historical city center, beautiful natural Park Monte Orlando on the mountain of the same name, the Turkish Grotto, etc.) and hotels, of course, are also available: see, in particular, the Hotel Mirasole International and Hotel Viola, as well as the cozy guest house B&B il Giglio Marino. It is more convenient to get here not through Terracina, but through Formia, which has a direct railway connection with Rome. From Rome to Formia can be reached in just over an hour. Formia is a 15 minute bus ride from Gaeta. So, if you wish, you can go to Gaetou in one day.

Formia(formia), by the way, is also suitable for a beach holiday, like the nearby town Skauri(Scauri), where there is also a railway station and prices are pleasing with moderation.

To the south, the resorts of Campania begin, many can be reached from Rome. Read more about them.

Within an hour and a half drive north of Rome are places such as Ladispoli, Santa Marinella and Lido di Tarquinha.

Yes, before Ladispoli(Ladispoli) from the main Roman station Roma Termini can be reached in just 40-50 minutes, and if you go from the station Roma San Pietro (next to the Vatican), the journey will take less than half an hour. (By the way, read more about where it is better to live in Rome in the corresponding article.) From the Ladispoli-Cerveteri railway station to the sea, it’s only 10–15 minutes on foot. The beach here is sandy (dark volcanic sand) and quite long, there are both paid and free sections (of course, there are more paid ones). In a word, Ladispoli is a good option for a one-day outing, and given the proximity to Rome, you can stay here for a few days in order to be able to visit from time to time The eternal City(There is practically nothing to see in Ladispoli itself, and in general the place is not too picturesque). There are not many hotels here, but there are still some options: see, for example, Alle Tamerici Hotel, Hotel Villa Margherita and Hotel Miramare.

Santa Marinella(Santa Marinella) is a little further - about an hour's drive from Rome - and generally makes a more pleasant impression than Ladispoli. This is small and quiet resort, more suitable for a quiet family vacation(including with children). The central (sandy) beach of this town in the summer months is usually packed to capacity, especially in its free part. However, nearby (near the Odescalchi Castle and Hotel L "Isola) you can find a small "wild" beach - rocky, with crystal clear water. Another (pebble-rocky) beach is located at some distance from the city center and its railway station, however here is much more spacious... From the station about 15 minutes on foot, the landmark is Hotel del Sole... This option is also possible: some hotels (for example, Hotel Villa delle Palme) have their own "beaches" in the form of a platform protruding into the sea with sun loungers and beach umbrellas (to swim in the sea, you need to go down into the water on a special ladder).

By the way, if you get off the train one stop earlier - at the Santa Severa station (be careful: not all trains stop here), then you can walk (10-15 minutes on foot) to the castle located on the seashore (Castello di Santa Severa). This castle is remarkable both in itself and in the fact that a rather wide sandy beach adjoins it - much less crowded than the beach in Santa Marinella. In other words, Santa Severa(Santa Severa) no less, and perhaps even more interesting option if you need a beach where you can go for a day trip from Rome.

Lido di Tarquinia(Lido di Tarquinia)- Another one beach resort north of Rome, which is worth mentioning separately. The place is quite popular, but at the same time, untrampled by tourists. The beach here is sandy (dark sand), there are paid and free sections. There are many different kinds of restaurants nearby. And around - peace and quiet, pines and fields. True, it is more convenient to go here by car, especially since Tarquinia proper is located a few kilometers from here - an ancient and very interesting city.

In general, almost limitless prospects open up for auto travelers, since on the coast in the northern outskirts of Rome you can find many other interesting places echek. It is worth paying attention in particular to the beaches Santo Agostino(Santo Agostino), between Tarquinia and Civitavecchia. Further north, the beaches of Tuscany begin. Here, we can mention, for example, places such as Ansedonia(Ansedonia) And Cape Argentario(Promontorio dell "Argentario), where it is more convenient to get just from Rome than from Florence or Pisa.

When choosing a hotel or apartment in Italy in general and in Rome in particular, use not only booking sites, but also price comparison services. We recommend Roomguru.ru.

The same should be done when searching for air tickets. Pay attention, for example, to Skyscanner.ru.

Boat trips on the caves - one of the favorite pastimes of vacationers. It's time to talk about the place where we spent the next 8 days. This Tyrrhenian coast or coast of Odysseus.
Actually - Anzio, this is a small provincial town, which is located 40 kilometers from Rome on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was founded by the Trojans after their arrival in the region of Lazio, and almost immediately became an important commercial and cultural center region. According to legend, the foundation of Anzio is attributed to Atheus, the son of Odysseus and the Greek sorceress Circe.

From about 338g. BC. Anzio became the most popular holiday destination and settlement for wealthy Roman patricians. The city was built up with palaces, the villas of Cicero, Caius Lucretius, Caesar Augustus towered along the seashore. It was in Anzio that the most famous emperors were born. ancient rome- Caligula and Nero. The city's seaport is named after Nero. The legendary villa of Nero, which has survived to this day, recalls the luxury of bygone times. In the days of the distant past, Anzio (Antium is the ancient Roman name of the city) was one of the best sea resorts. The ancient philosopher Cicero wrote: "I prefer Anzio to Rome!"

Today's Anzio is a small residential town, consisting, as it were, of 2 parts.
In the first part, the city itself and a small seaport are located. The second part of the city is a tourist area, in which there are restaurants, bars, pubs, discos, nightclubs. Actually, we were in the second zone. A strip of wide sandy beaches with a total length of 12 km, framed by beautiful nature, stretches from the Villa of Nero to the Pine Villa (Villa dei Pini).
By the way, the Romans themselves usually come to modern Anzio for the weekend in order to take a break from the rhythms big city and enjoy the sea air and peace.

Last time, I already described the Beauty Rafael Hotel, where we lived. Pretty cute, we love it. Maybe also because on the day of check-in it was my birthday, and we were given one of the most the best rooms, with its own loggia-attic, living room and bedroom.
We enjoyed our dinner in the attic. In the evenings (as well as early in the morning) it was not hot there, but warm. And very beautiful. We watched the sunset and sunrise from there. Such interesting flowers grew in pots in the attic, their leaves folded at the top into a “bud”, like a rose. By the way, I took home a sprout, and it took root perfectly.

The beach on the coast of Anzio is sandy and clean. The sea is not just clean, it is the cleanest! The water is clear and calm (we did not have a chance to observe a storm). A lot of shells and small crabs scurrying everywhere.

Sunbeds and umbrellas - for the money. I don't even know how much it costs. We didn't use it.
On the coast it is very good to relax with small children. It's pretty shallow there. Moreover, the strand stretches for tens of meters from the shore. The water is very, very salty, so it literally throws the body up like a float. Swimming is so easy - a pleasure!

Near the coast there are some volcanic formations. Small islands with a pumice-like surface. There are especially many crabs here.

Italian kids here catch them with nets.

There are many grottoes and mini-caves on small islands.

Their surface is even more interesting. It is made from fossilized shells and molluscs. So interesting!

Loved the sunset in Anzio. While you are climbing up the stairs from the beach, the sun is just setting right in front of your eyes (and not slowly sinking, as in our country) beyond the horizon. Simply - plop! And there is none. Very cool.

The locals in Anzio are friendly and welcoming. Still - their business, for the most part, depends on tourists. The closer to the beach, the more expensive the food. It is worth going further, to larger supermarkets - the same thing, cheaper one and a half times.

The products are unique. I really liked the smoked meat and sausage. They sell them in big sizes. The diameter of the sausage circle is 30-50 cm. They are cut right there, on a special machine - as much as you ask. Same thing with meat. Taste is amazing. And no soy!

Wines are different. And cheaper and more expensive. When buying, pay attention to the label.
The best wines are labeled - DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). Actually, these same "controlata" and "guarantita" are worth looking for on the bottle if you are going to buy vintage wine. DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) - will be worse. But - also good. Russian tourists jokingly call these wines "control" without "guarantees". Next come the "ordinary" wines. Of the canteens, the best is IGT. Worse - VDT.

In general, in Italy you can buy wine even at a price of 2 euros for 2 liters. Of course, there is no time for markings. But among our tourists, even such wine goes with a bang. And no one seemed to complain. Even the cheapest wines were consumed without serious consequences in the morning. In any case, wine lovers from our group assured us of this.

Red Chianti is considered the best wine. Tourists often take Limoncello as a gift. "Limoncello" is considered something of a local exotic. Like we have vodka. It is quite strong, thick, viscous, similar to liquor.

Italy has great cheeses. Be sure to try the local parmesan. In cafes you can have a bite to eat with a huge pizza worth 10 euros (40 centimeters in diameter), pasta is offered everywhere (pasta in different versions). In general, after Italy, you don’t want to look at pizza and pasta. So these dishes are boring for the trip.

Italy has excellent olive oil. It also varies. Different percentage and different spin. Interesting, but it also has an interesting smell. I bought olive oil in Russia, but it is not at all like what is sold in Italy. So I brought a bottle of this miracle with me.

By the way, while walking along Anzio, you can see whole plantations of olive trees.
In general, Anzio is a quiet, peaceful little town. And relaxing here is a pleasure. And if you want to get out somewhere, then there are so many interesting places nearby. This is Rome, and the Vatican, and Pompeii.
But more on that next time.
To be continued...
